AS YOU THINK, SO YOU BECOME Thought is a fine and powerful force on earth. This is supplied to us by food. Food does not mean merely what we eat, but what we gather through all our senses. They control our life,

mould our character and shape our destiny. Thought impels us to action, activity creates fresh impression in the mind. When thought is transcended, intuition functions and self knowledge supervenes. By understanding the laws of thought, we can mould or shape our character in any-way we like. The common saying "As you think, so you become." Is very true. As are ourthoughts so must be our life. Beffer thoughts bring better actions.

. 4, Man has made his own destiny

by his own thinking and acting. He is the master of his own destiny and can change it. There is no doubt about this. By rightthinking and strong exertion, he can become the master of his destiny. There are many examples where people have made their own destiny from within, by their thoughts and actions. Sri T. Muthuswami Ayr, the first Indian high court judge in Madras was born in absolute poverty. He had to study at night under municipal lanterns. In the west, sons of cobblers and fishermen have risen to very high positions. Sir Walter Scoff was very poor. Life of James Ramsay Macdonald is worth mentioning. He was a man of great Purshartha. He rose from poverty to power-from the field of labour to the status of Prime Minister of Britain.

Every man is born with his Samskaras. The mind contains the impression of thought and actions of the previous birth. The good Samskaras give him protection from extraneous., undesirable and hostile influences. Thought is expressed in words and executed in deeds. Word is the handmade of thought and deed is the end result. Hence the saying "As you think, so you become."

Tips to Wean Children off Thumb Sucking Babies suck their tiny thumbs even before they are born. Thumb sucking may be adorable, butitis harmfulto a child's oral health. It's safe- but only to a

point. That point arises when _______ permanent teeth begin to come in. Children generally stop this habit on .

theirown between the ages of2 and 5. But sometimes they continue the .

practiceintothedangerzone. I

Why do babies sucktheirthumbs Babies have a natural urge to suck. This urge usually decreases after the age of 6 months. But many babies continue to sucktheirthumbsto soothe themselves. Thumb- sucking can become a habit in babies and young children who use it to comfort themselves when they feel hungry, afraid, restless, quiet, sleepy, or bored.

Problems & Plan of Action Thumb-sucking in children youngerthan 4 yrs is usually not a problem. Children who sucktheirthumbs often orwith great intensity around age 4 or 5, or those who are still sucking their thumbs at age 6, are at risk for dental or speech problems like:-

PROBLEMS PLAN OF ACTION Improper alignment of teeth Usually corrects itself (Malocclusion) when child stops thumb Speech problems-unable to say Ts & Ds, sucking before the loss lisping & tongue thrusting when talking of baby teeth and arrival

ofpermanentteeth, mostor Effects on the Jawbone: The longer & harder a child sucks thumb the more all of the deformity may harm is done to the teeth, palate, and disappear. However, if the jaws. Prolonged thumb easily deforms habit persists then the bone around the upper and lower orthodontic treatment front teeth & produces a gap when will be needed. teeth are brought together, known as an open bite.

Role of Parents & Home Remedies to deal with children's thumb sucking.

2. Focus on correcting the cause ofthe anxiety and provide comfortto your child.

3. Putting gloves on your child's hands or wrapping the thumb with an adhesive bandage or a cloth before bed time may help remind yourchild notto suckthe thumb.

4. Don'tshame or punish yourchild forthumb-sucking. This will only loweryourchild's self-esteem.

5. Placing a toy in yourchild's hand to replacethe behavior with one that is more appropriate.

"We Travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us": With this quote in mind, MSAshokVihar organized an excursion trip to Mohyal Ashram Haridwar from 301h April to i

si May2016, for which a tourist bus was hired. The participants included 45 members of our Mohyal community from Ashok Vihar region. Our trip began at 6 o'clock on 311April 201 6 fromAshok Vihar. Members were in an ecstatic mood to be a part ofthis journey and there was laughter all around. After 3 hours offun, the bus had its first stop at Moolchand for breakfast which mcl poori choie to continental sandwiches and tea. lt was nice to see members having great fun and taking care of each other. To engage all the members in the bus, Tambola was played and it was received with great interest. Some ended up winning and some didn't win at all, but the zeal that everyone showed was too good and that created an awesome atmosphere all around. We reached Mohyal Ashram Haridwar, at 3 pm. After enjoying the delicious lunch at the Ashram, we occupied the allotted rooms and rested for a while.

In the evening, all of us made a bee-line towards Har-ki- Pauri, one ofthe most important places ofworship in Haridwar, where thousands of people take a dip in the holy water of the Ganga. Har means God and Pauri means footprints. Har-ki- Pauri thus literally means footprints of God. Hindus believe that a holy dip (bath) here in River Ganga will wash offyour sins. At Har-ki-Pauri, we witnessed the spectacular evening Aarti. When the Aarti is performed, the reflection of the golden diyas that keep floating on the river offers an enchanting view ofthe ghat. After theAarti, some ofus took a dip in holy waters, after which we were back in the Ashram, for dinner and had a nice sleep. The next morning saw us fit and sprightly, ready for the next part of our journey i.e. to have a career counselling session followed by our monthly Mohyal Meeting. The meeting started post breakfast and was chaired by Manu Mehta (President ). After chanting of Mohyal Prayer, good wishes were conveyed to the members on their well-being and house congratulated the MS Ashok Vihar Team on this successful trip to Mohyal Ashram.

i . Many valuable suggestions came across in the counselling session.

2. Manu Mehta advised everyone on the scope of vast opportunities in Insurance industry and he related the same with his journey.

3. Dr. S.C. Duffa took several examples from his career and enlightened everyone with his research and also advised on vast opportunities existing in Science and Technology.

5. Gaurav Dutta and Ruchir Duffa gave their suggestions on how to select a career and how time can be a valuable asset in one's career.

6. Many members participated in the discussions and made this session a fruitful one. Some parents curiously asked about their children's career pathway and how they can as parents add to the betterment of their children's career.

pretty laid back afternoon in which the members interacted with each other. The members were treated with hot and delicious lunch in the afternoon at the Ashram. We started our journey back to Delhi, at 3 pm. lt was amazing to see the enthusiasm in the members who didn't stop singing and dancing while on their way back to Delhi. lt seemed as if the journey has just started. For the evening tea, the bus was stopped at Moolchand and all the members were served hot tea and snacks. This small break did wonders in the enthusiasm of members and they felt refreshed. The journey started again with rejuvenated energy. BAKSHI'S FROM GUJRANWALA Having gone through Mohyal history, I noticed very little has been written about Bakshi Ram Ratan, Bakshi Raghunath Sahai and Bakshi Ram Krishan. These three brothers contributed in education, social reforms and freedom struggle, and merit a place in history of not only Mohyals but also Punjab.

Their grandfather Risaldar Major Bakshi Ganda Singh Chhibber of Guides Cavalry served with distinction in the Afghan and China wars

in l84Oand 1860. Hewas granted 200 acres (8 Murabbas) of land in Gujranwala. He shifted from Bhera to Gujranwala. His two elder sons Han Singh and Diwan Chand joined the calavry and the third Deena Nath graduated as a

lawyer and set up his private practise at Dharamshala. The two elder sons died in service in their early 30's and their families became his responsibility. Both sons had three sons each. Bakshi Gopinath SDO Punjab forest service, Rai Sahib Bakshi Labhu Ram Executive Engineer,

Kanhaiya LaI MA LLB Advocate Gujranwala and Bakshi Ram Ratan BA BT Principal DAV college Lahore, Professor Bakshi Raghunath Sahai and Bakshi Ram Krishan MA LLB Advocate Hissar. After Bakshi Ganda Singh died, his 6 grandsons and i grand daughter were looked after by advocate Deena Nath till he and his wife perished in the Kangra earthquake of 1907. Thereafter Bakshi Ram Ratan with his mother and Iwo younger brothers shifted to Lahore. He was appointed headmaster of DAV high school at the age of 21, being the first batch of BA BT (Bachelor of training) after winning gold medal as a graduate from Farman Christian College. His two siblings were his students in school in 1905 and 1907. They later did their graduation and post graduation from the Punjab University. Raghunath Sahai after teaching in Government College Lahore moved to Rawalpindi as Professor in Gordon College.

Bakshi Ramratan became a follower of Arya Samaj founded by Swami Dayanad Saraswati and DAV school and college founder Mahatma Hansraj. Incidentally Lala Hansraj was elevated to Mahatma when he refused to appeal to the government for mercy for his son Balraj who was sentenced to death for participating in

the freedom struggle. He declared that his son had done no crime to fight for freedom of his country. As Arya Samaj advocated widow remarriage which the society at large opposed, Bakshi Ram Ratan refused to marry when his wife died within 6 months ofthe marriage. He declared that till the Samaj allowed widow remarriage, the widower should also not get remarried. Despite his mother's plea's he said he had fulfilled his mother's wishes to get married and would remarry but devoted himself to the cause of reforms and education in the Hindu society and education of his younger brothers. Some teachers who were elder to him protested that a 21 year old had been appointed a headmaster ignoring their longer service and higher age. Mahatma Hansraj ruled that he had acted in the best interest of the school. In 1931 Ram Ratan was appointed the principal of DAV college Lahore. Some senior professors represented that BA BT was not a high qualification as some of the professors were MA,PhD etc. Mahatma Ji told him that Ram Ratan was not only an outstanding administrator and disciplinarian but could teach graduate classes. His textbooks were approved by the University. This college came up during his tenure of five to six years. After that he became member of the Management Committee and senator of Punjab University.

Professor Raghunath Sahai married daughter of Sardar Kartar Singh Bali of Mirpur who was descendant of General Maha Singh

Bali of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's army. Sardar Kartar Singh was serving as secretary to Maharaja Pratap Singh of J&K and had gone with him to attend King George the fifth's Durbar in Delhi in 1911. He exposed himself and suffered from pneumonia and died in 1912 resulting in his daughters marriage being postponed by 6 months. He had adopted his eldest grand daughter and eldest grand son Sardar Surinder Singh Bali who inherited several houses and lands in Mirpur, Kashmir and Jammu. He lived like a landlord even though most of his property lost its value after 1947 invasion on J&K. He shifted to Lahore from Rawalpindi, as his elder brother had developed heart problem and needed the care of his family. He served in DAV college Lahore till 1946. At 45 he learned French and German to read science books in these languages. After 1946 he served in honorary capacity on the request of one of his students Gurbaksh Singh who had founded Khalsa college in Mahilpur. After his family evacuated to east Punjab he taught in various colleges at Shimla, Mogha and Hisar up to the age of 75. He settled in Hisar at the suggestion of his brother Bakshi Ram Krishan, who had settled there since 1919 asjuniorto Lala Lajpath Rai. He as Chela of Lalaji

, distinguished himself as a criminal lawyer, congressman, social

reformer and educationist. His wife took lot of interest in social work and their children after good education have done very well in their lives. The daughters contributed room in Moyal Ashram in Haridwar. As a Congressman he was President of District Congress Committee and hosted Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru during his visits to Hissar.

Both the brothers lived to ripe old age of 92 and 90 years respectively. The patriarch of the family Bakshi Ganda Singh's nephews Bakshi Gurdas, Bakshi Melaram lived upto their 90's and Melaram's record of 97 was improved by Bakshi Surinder Nath BA LLB son of Bakshi Gopi Nath who lived upto 101. After demise of Bakshi Ramkrishan's son Raj Krishan at 92, the eldest in the family now is Col KS Bakshi, AVSM - Great Grand son of Ganda Singh and the Great Great Great Grand son of Bakshi Gyan Singh of Bhera, followed by Rai Saheb Bakshi Labhu Ram's grandson Rajan Bakshi IPS, retired DGP who is the oldest Great Great Great Grand son.

After the loss of homes in Gujranwala and Lahore the Bakshi's took shelter at Hissar where Bakshi Ram Krishan had settled and helped them in allotment of agricultural land, a small compensation for their loss in Gujranwala and some compensation for other property taken over by the Custodian of Evacuee Property in Pakistan and India. An interesting incident was when Bakshi Ram Krishan was offered Judgeship of the High Court, he declined the government's offer as he had a large family to support and the emoluments as a High Court Judge could not match his earnings as a criminal lawyer. As he had not saved any money as a freedom fighter he needed this amount to settle his children who were still to complete their education and get married.

An interesting mention of Brahm Nath Dutt's father and my grandmother's younger brother Choudhry Guran Ditta Mal of Viram Dattan was very fair and had blue eyes like his sister and settled down in his village after retirement as Manager of Dhariwal Woolen Mills. He built a very high quality well and named it Ganga Sarovar in the name of his sister and my Grand Mother Ganga Devi mother of the three Bakshi's. In his drawing room (Baithak) amongst other two coloured pictures, one of George 5th Emperor of Britain and Choudhry Sahab dressed in three piece suit with a pocket watch with a golden chain from the waist coat pocket similiar looking beard and eyes looked as if it was the picture of the same person. Unfortunately we lost this elder during the riots at the time of partition of the country.

I trust this sheds some light on the Bakshi's of Gujranwala and puts into perspective their contribution to society at an eventful time in history.

MS South Zone holds monthly meeting at Ranikhet on 21 May 2016

As the Mercury soared high in Delhi, the long awaited trip by MS South Zone at last commenced in the month of May. We a group of i 6 members in our self driven cars drove down to Ranikhet with great enthusiasm and excitement. We left Delhi early morning on 20th May with all cars in a convoy, taking our first break at Bikanerwala Gajraula for breakfast. After breakfast we headed straight to Bhimtal a city of lake the largest one in the Kumaon region in the state of Uttarakhand. Bhimtal is an ancient place named after Bheem of Mahabharat. lt is believed that Bheem visited this place during their period of banishment (Vanwas). Soaking in the picturesque view we had lunch and drove ahead to Ranikhet. The scenic beauty and the drive through the Pine and Cedar forests were a visual treat. On the way we stopped for Darshan at the famous Kainchi Dham Hanuman temple. The cool air and low temperature were a

great respite from Delhi's heat and pollution. We reached Ranikhet by 5 pm where we were welcomed by Ritu Mohanji, President MS South Zone and Virender Mohanji who are also local residents of Ranikhet. We were escorted by them to our hotel- Hotel Holm Farm a heritage property situated uphill amongstthe serene Pine forests. Evening tea and dinner were enjoyed with a heavy rain and hail storm and chill in the air.

Nextdaywe started a liffle earlywith the music ofthe rising sun, chirping of birds and a hot cup of morning tea and all pepped up and fresh, went for local sight seeing. Fruit Orchards, Jhoola Devi Temple, Trekking and cycling. Our youth Vanshuj Datta had carried his folding bicycle to have fun in the hills. In the evening we assembled at Shri Virender Mohanji & Smt Ritu Mohanjis residence for our meeting. With the seffing Sun, humming of birds and the whistling sound ofthe trees and the scented mountain breeze the chanting of the Gayatri Mantra was too soothing and soul satisfying. Different topics were discussed. Firstly which is very important is involving our youth....for it is the youth of today who will carry forward the torch of Mohyaliyat to our future generations. This trip was a

teaser, as well as luring ofthe youngsters to come forward and enjoy at the same time participate in community work. Their participation, valuable suggestions and contributions will be acknowledged and appreciated. The members also decided to donatetoys, clothes, medicines utensils and otherthings of use to an NGO. The Mohyal brethren have been requested to donate generously. Adopting a child for education was discussed, as to how can we help our weaker brethren in

educating their children. The meeting ended with a high tea served by the hosts Ritu Mohanji & Virender Mohanji. Mrs Kamlesh Mehta wife of late. Gp. Capt D.C. Mehta Ji cut the cake specially ordered for the meeting. The Sabha enjoyed the quality time spent with the Mohans and thanked them for being perfect hosts.
