Bali felt that it wasworthwhile considering the suggestion and a decision maybe taken after discussing the matter in detail with Dr. RattanDatta. Rzd. 8 Mohyal Mitter / OCTOBER 2013 Donate Rs.11,000 towards Langar Fund, Mohyal Ashram

Charity Drive by Mohyals forProject – Relief In UttarakhandThe fury of nature, seen in the form of Himalayan Tsunami, wascaused by heavy rainfall and cloud burst on 15/16 June 2013,and made it one of the worst natural disasters in our country. This resulted in devastating floods & landslides in theUttarakhand. The scenes of destruction brought tears ineveryone's eyes and made every heart cry irrespective of caste, creed or religion. On the 1st July, an initiative was taken by Vijay Pal CharitableTrust, along with Bhai Mati Dass Mohyal Charitable Society andother Mohyals to start a charity drive for relief work in Uttarakhand, and an effort was made for distribution of blankets, with the helpof some local friends, who had volunteered to help in our

distribution work. 500 blankets, along with some raw food stuff, were distributed in badly- affected areas, like Bhyundar, Pulna,Gobindghat, Pandukeshwar, Ghangaria and other small villages,

around Joshimath, in 4 phases. We are still on the job and thisdrive will continue. We would like to thank the team of Shri Bharat Pokhriyal and allthose Mohyal donors, namely, Shri K. K. Vaid, Wg. Cdr. Inder K.Bali, Nirmal Vaid, Rakesh Vaid, Rajeev Chhibber (USA), RameshVaid (USA), Maya Vaid, Monika Vaid, Dr. Vipra Vaid, SanjayChhibber, Dr. Manju Rai Vaid, Santosh Sharma Vaid, RameshKumar Bali (Kabul), Bunty Bali, Dimpy Chhibber Nawab &Sanjeev Rai Vaid. This is just a small effort, but a hugework is still to be done for the rehabilitation of the people, whohave lost their life-time earnings due to these floods.

We, Mohyals, are warrior Brahmins and consider ourselves asan elite class. As such, we appeal to all Mohyals to come forward

and let us do this work in a big way, under the banner of ourApex Body - GMS and show the world that, besides being warriorsand offering our services in the Defence Forces, we are goodSamaritans too and work for the betterment of the society.Jai Mohyal ….. Jai Hind.

QUOTES AND ONE-LINERSEDUCATIONBrain drain is better than drain in brain.Education is not received, it is achieved.Increase the quantity of quality of education.Knowing others is wisdom, knowing self is enlightenment. If you don’t know where you are going, any road can take uthere.

HUMOROUSIn India, for every action, there is a corresponding over-reaction.The usefulness of any meeting is in inverse proportion to theattendance.Beware of the naked man who offers you his shirt.A diplomat is a man who always remembers a woman’s birthdaybut never remembers her age.Mobile phones are the only subject on which men boast aboutwho’s got the smallest.A good lecture should be like a woman’s skirt: short enough toarouse interest but long enough to cover the essentials.Women are confusing. Before marriage they expect a man, aftermarriage they suspect a man and after he dies they respect theman.People with narrow minds usually have broad tongues.

It is the factor which reminds usthat forces behind us are greater than the challenges ahead ofus.Hope is like clouds; some bring cheer, others just pass by.Faith in success should be far greater than fear of failure.A cynic is a person who on smelling flowers looks around forcoffin.Biggest sign of insanity is doing same thing again and againand expecting a different output.TEAMWORKWithout energy there can be no synergy.Coming together is beginning, keeping together is progress andwinning together is success.Teamwork is the ability to direct individual accomplishmenttowards organizational objectives.None of us is as smart as all of us.It’s my way or the highway. No individual raindrop ever considered itself responsible for theflood & neither can it take complete credit for fertility.Everyone does not have equal talent, but everyone should begiven equal opportunities to develop the talent. Are they lone wolves or team players.

ANTIM YATRA‘Death must be something extraordinary as life is. Life is atotal thing. Sorrow, pain, anguish, joy, absurd ideas, possession, envy, love, the aching miseryof loneliness – all that is life. And, to understand death, wemust understand the whole life; not just a fragment of itand live with that fragment, as most of us do.In the very understanding of life, there is the understandingof death, because both are not separate.’– J. Krishnamurti

Shri Brij Mohan Mehta(Chhibber)We the members of South ZoneSabha were taken aback onhearing of the sad demise ofour revered member, who trulywas not only a pioneer of thesabha but also, a pillar which isaptly supporting the sabha. Itwill not be wrong or out of con-text, if one were state that thesabha owes its existence tostalwarts such as Brij Mohan ji.Being a father figure to thesabha, he was truly an epitomeof maxim 'A friend, philosopher& guide'. With his demise wehave been deprived of his guid-ance & very valuable advice. He was a staunch & true20.08.2013. He was working

Mohyal who possessed all traitsto be referred as Pride of thebiradri, who also contributedmeaningfully to 'History ofMohyals' written by Shri. PNBali. He was aptly rewarded theMohyal Sewa puruskar Trophyin the 50th annual MohyalSabha meeting held in Bhopal

in Jan 2003.He was very ac-tively associated with MohyalEducation Society for a numberof years. He loved to readMohyal Mitter, so as to keephimself abreast with the activi-ties of the community.Brij Mohanji was a clear headed& a perfectionist. To substanti-ate the statement we would liketo place on record the exem-plary & systematic way in whichhe shouldered & discharged hisresponsibilities of founder trea-surer & secretary of the sabhafor over a decade. Due to hisadvancing age & his ill healthhe had to relinquish charge. Hewas indeed a good team mem-ber who had imbibed goodsportsman spirit being an ar-dent follower of cricket with cre-dentials of being a batsman ofreckoning of his hay days insporting arena, also A connois-seur of music and poetry, whohimself was a good singer ofGazals. Rightfull claimant to theadage "Versatility thy name".His flawless (without any cut-t ings / over writ ing)manuscripted minutes are notonly a treat to a naked eye butalso, a true testimony of hiswork. Being a cost consciousindividual with a minute eye tokeep away from wasteful ex-penditure, he would pen downin his own hand 'Notice Callingfor Monthly Meetings' on indi-vidual post cards to all mem-bers of the sabha & post them.

His integrity, loyalty & sinceritywere par excellence. His pass-ing away is a irreplaceable lossto the family in particular & theMohyal Biradri in general.Brij Mohanji was son of late ShriManohar Lal Mehta, born inMultan (now in Pakistan) & hestudied in DAV School, Lahore.Subsequent shifted to India af-ter partition and settled at No.7,Begumpur, Malviya Nagar, af-ter superannuating from BSFas the Accts Officer. Survivedby Wife Smt. Kanta Mehta, daughter Smt. Savita & threesons, Ravinder, Arvind &Yoginder, two brothers Inder &Chander. As a true family manhe maintained close links withthe families of his brothers andsisters, to whom he was like afather figure. We would like to reassuremembers of the bereaved fam-ily that SZMS is not only withthem in their hour of grief butalso, of our unstinted support. We join them in their prayersfor bestowing peace to the de-parted soul.South Zone Sabha in conclu-sion would most respectfullysubmit that with all humility, webow our heads in reverence toLate Shri Brij Mohan Mehta andwould describe him in one word"GENUINE GEM".His wife Smt. On the face of it, seven yearsappears to be a long period of

time for over ruing or amelio-rating sorrowful ill feelings, anyanger or anguish and ever mi-nor in life. But when it con-cerns the loss of your dearestand closest ones, the longev-ity or brevity of time has no rel-evance at all, they remain inyour hearts always and wasand ever and are rememberedday and night. Shri K.L.Datta – Sweet RemembrancesBy: Ch. G.L. Datta ‘Josh’

In ones’ life, some remembrances are indelible and virtuousand should always be shared so that their spirit may beemulated by others. Thisprinciple applies to each andevery body in the society, butwe, the Mohyals, have aspecial cohesive blood, whichattracts one another like amagnet. Our historical backgrounds are living witnesses.Recently, MS Prem Nagar,Dehradun, celebrated MohyalMilan, which was graced bymy colleagues. Our SecretaryGeneral, Shri D.V.Mohan,speaking at the function, paidrich tributes to its founding President, Shri K.L.Datta, whichprompted me to write this article. Whenever I visited MSDehradun, in connection with Milan or for interaction, I usedto visit Premnagar MS Dehradun. It was a pleasure for theteam to attend their meetings. To converse with the late ShriK.L.Datta was always an educative experience, fruitful, saturated with Mohyali spirit, and full of zeal and vigour.Whenever I wrote to him for an article in the Urdu edition ofMM, or in English, he obliged me. His articles always depictedthe flow, flare and frankness, punctuated with Urdu couplets.Shri K.L.Datta, a Silver Medalist from YMCA, Lahore, ShortHand Contest in 1939 was appointed as a PA to MaharajaHari Singh of J&K for six months and, after that, he served inthe FRI Dehradun, for 31 years and retired in 1979 and settledthere. The incidents narrated below pertain to the partition ofIndia, in which the late Shri K.L.Datta described in detail oneof his experiences as a matured journalist for MM readers22 years ago. It has been transformed by me for an interestingreading, especially for the younger generation of thecommunity.Large-scale communal disturbances erupted in March 1947in Rawalpindi, and the date of Independence for India wasdeclared and creation of Muslim State of Pakistan wasannounced. Hindus and Sikhs had started fleeing WestPunjab. Shri K.L.Datta sent out quite a few applications forjobs in India. He sent his family to Srinagar, which was atthat time a heaven for Hindus and Sikhs.

On the 26th August 1947, Shri K.L.Datta received a telegramasking him to appear before His Highness The Maharaja ofJammu and Kashmir, at his palace in Srinagar, for an interviewfor the post of PA. He reached there and, after the interview,he was appointed to the post. Unfortunately, the Pathan tribalsraided the state and, when they reached the outskirts ofSrinagar, the Maharaja and his staff came over to Jammu.Soon after, the Indian Army arrived and bitter fighting ensued;there was no substantial work to do in the office. He couldnot meet his family members, who were living in the city.Meanwhile, he received an offer of appointment as a PA inthe Forest Research Institute, Dehradun. Soon he resigned. Then he was confronted with a problem for exit from the stateas a Permit was needed and it was only to be issued by

Raizada Gian Chand Bali, the then DIG Police JammuRange, but he was out of station. He decided to go by air toDelhi, but no seat was available. He came back to thepalace. Even his request to the Army Officers went in vain.He came to the aerodrome again to try, but to no avail. Atabout 5 PM, a plane from Srinagar landed but he wasrefused any seat. By that time cold evening shadows werelengthening when a plane from Delhi arrived, from whichRaizada Gian Chand Bali, DIG alighted. DIG Bali embracedhim and asked how he was there.

‘A few words about Rzd. Gian Chand Bali,DIG/CID KashmirAfter retirement, he was appointed as AssistantCommissioner of Excise and Taxation in HimachalPradesh. He saved the life of Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehruduring a premeditated attack by the stooges of the Britishrulers in the NWFP in October 1946. His singular serviceas a high ranking Police Officer and legendary hospitalityto hundreds of Hindus and Sikhs refugees who werehoused and fed by him at his personal cost during thecommunal riots in the wake of the partition won the Highacclaim of Lady Mountbateen Sardar Patel and Gen. K.M.Cariappa. He received 50 Commendation Certificates forhis distinguished services to the nation.’

By: G.L. Datta ‘Josh’

After listening to his tale of woe, Rzd. Sahib took him to theArmy Commander and told him the purpose “No Permit, NoSeat” was the reply to the DIG Police from him. RaizadaGian Chand Bali said “very, very good”. Our Bhai Sahebwould fly to Delhi by this very plane. He went to theaerodrome officer and whispered something in his ear. Theofficer, in turn, ran towards the captain of the aircraft andtalked to him. The captain, an Australian gentleman, agreedto accommodate him, on the condition that he would performhis journey by using his bedroll as a seat. The veteran Policeofficer literally lifted him and seated him into the plane anda warm hand shake was given and he left only when theplane was air-borne. Shri K.L.Datta thanked from the coreof his heart for the timely help under trying circumstancesso difficult to imagine or think of under those disturbedsurroundings in the state.Shri K.L.Datta cited another incident, when he had a boutof cough and wanted to get himself medically checked up.He wrote to a hospital at Dharampur (Himachal Pradesh),for an appointment, but he got no response. One day ShriK.L.Datta, while going through the MM, came to know of DrB.L.Datta, mentioned to be a relative of Rzd. Gian Chand jiBali. He wrote to Dr Datta about his problem. Dr Datta atonce replied to his letter, but, instead, invited him to Solanto stay with him for the duration of the check up. ShriK.L.Datta got well and thanked Dr B.L.Datta for his kindness.Shri K.L.Datta concluded his emotional article with the viewthat there is unmistakably a strong strand of invisibleaffection, which binds Mohyals in an ever sweet smellinggarlands of brotherhood; and desired that it is for the Mohyalsto perceive it, to recognize it, to benefit from it and furtherrevitalize it, with the noble aim of preserving it for posterity.”AMEN
