ATLANTA UNITED DEFENDER MICHAEL PARKHURST
ATLANTA UNITED MIDFIELDER / JULIAN GRESSEL
On the team’s possession: “So, the first 40 minutes wasn’t the type of play that we wanted to see. After that, we went to 4-4-2, we got more into the game. Directly after, Josef Martinez had a good chance when he hit the crossbar. We got better in the game, and we also created more chances. We did it much better the second half. I said to my team after the game that you all straightened your backs and tried to push forward. They (Philadelphia) didn’t play the four extra games during this period. Every three or four days, we’ve had a game. We are just missing the freshness to get a pass to the right man.”
On creating chances in midfield:“We changed the system after thirty minutes to get Pity Martinez on the ball around Josef (Martinez). Normally,Eric can handle the ball under pressure. You want those guys to outplay some players with one turnor one control. We saw it sometimes but we have to do it more. Teams are very good when organized. They want you to fall in the trap and play in the middle. We have to recognize when we have to play certain balls. Leandro Gonzalez Pirez did a fantastic job. Miles Robinson was excellent again. There are also many positive things. I think if weare fresh, we will see a different team.”
On Miles Robinson’s growth:“He’s training, playing, and showing his form from the start. He’s an unbelievable athlete and just a normal guy who wants to play football and work hard. When you play against these kind of opponents or in tournaments like the Cham-pions League, yousee those players grow because they are playing against very tough opponents and for him it’s a great experience. We have to treasure that he’s now playing on this high level because he’s still young. Hopefully, he doesn’t fall back, but that’s normal when you’re young. Until now, he’s doing a fantastic job for the team and himself. Hopeful-ly,he can continue to do so. Right now, he’s really fantastic.”
On the possession and lack of chances created tonight:“We’re all frustrated a little bit. We want to be creating more chances and scoring more goals. We’re trying to do that. We’re not just trying to out-possess a team, that’s not what we’re going into a game thinking. We’re thinking we want to score goals and create chances, be offensive, and pin teams in the other half. It’s not happening rightnow for us and when that’s the case we need to try and have some shutouts.” On formation switches mid-game and difficulty to execute those:“Well, when you’re not playing well, you try and mix it up. We’re all aware of different formations, and we’ve all played different formations in our careers. You have to adjust and adapt. When we did change in the first half, we immediately created a little more pressure, and we had our best chance of the first half shortly after we switched. The idea is just to get more offensive and create more chances.”
On the team’s tired legs:“I think you could see that in the last 10-15 minutes where we did not get as high up on the field and did not really put that much pressure on them to really go for that win, and I think tired legs definitely come into play there. We have played a lot of game you know, but I think we still deserved to win the game. We had a few more chances to put away and could have created a lot more, but it was just a tough night and tough result.”
On the confidence of the team growing:“I think so. Obviously, we would have liked to start this break off with a win and go into this whole thing with three points, and four in MLS. I think we played a good game against Monterrey and got a deserved victory there, and tonight,unfortu-nately the result was not there, but I think our energy was good and we tried to be on top of them and make them defend a lot. We had a lot of possession and would have liked to create a lot more chances and put a lot of pressure on them, but we will be very happy to head into those two weeks now and get fresh and get going again.”

SCOUTING COLUMBUS CREWThe Crew enter Saturday’s game 2-1-1 in MLS play this season. After winning back-to-back games, Columbus suffered a 3-0 defeat last time out against the Philadelphia Union. Defender Gaston Sauro shares the team lead in scoring with USMNT forward Gyasi Zardes as both have scored two goals this year. Zardes scored the game-winning goal for the USMNT vs. Ecuador during the international break.
New head coach Caleb Porter is back in the state of Ohio after a successful college career at Akron. The former Portland Timbers coach won the 2015 MLS Cup with Portland against the Crew. He took over for Gregg Berhalter, who became the new USMNT coach.
USMNT goalkeeper Zach Steffen ranks second in MLS with two shutouts and a 0.33 GAA. Steffen is on loan with the Crew this season after completing a transfer to Manchester City recently.
Josef Martinez put together the best goal scoring single-season MLS has ever seen in 2018. He set a record with 31 goals in the regular season, the first 30-goal scorer in MLS history. He looks to become the third player in league history to be top goal scorer in back-to-back seasons.

• Frank de Boer was named Atlanta United’s second head coach in club history on December 23, 2018. A legendary Dutch player and coach, de Boer began his managerial career at Ajax, where he won a club-record four consecutive Eredivisie titles.
• De Boer also had an illustrious playing career, spending more than 15 combined seasons at Ajax and FC Barcelona. After retiring in 2006, de Boer soon went into coaching, beginning at the youth level at Ajax. While coaching at Ajax’s academy, known as one of the top developmental programs in all of Europe, de Boer was instrumental in the introduction and development of many youth players who went on to be distinguished players at club and international level.
• He soon took over as caretaker manager of the Ajax first team midway through the 2010-11 season. Led by numerous former academy players, his team clinched the title by defeating runners-up FC Twente 3-1. De Boer’s team followed that by winning each of the next three domestic titles, marking the first time Ajax claimed four consecutive Eredivisie titles in its decorated history.
• De Boer went on to win the Rinus Michels Award –awarded to the top manager in Dutch football –in consecutive years to become only the second coach to ever accomplish that feat, joining Guus Hiddink. He resigned as manager following the 2015-16 season with a career winning percentage of 60.3 percent.
• A legendary player for club and country, de Boer retired from international football in 2004 and at the time was the most capped player in Dutch history. With a total of 112 appearances over 15 years, de Boer helped lead the Netherlands into the quarterfinals of the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the semifinals of the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He still ranks third all-time in appearances in the federation’s history, surpassed by Wesley Sneijder and Edwin van der Sar.
• De Boer began his club playing career with Ajax in 1988 at just 18 years old. The following year, de Boer won his first title as a player, helping the club claim its 23rd domestic title. In 11 seasons as a player at Ajax, de Boer appeared in 328 matches and helped the club win the Eredivisie five times, KNVB Cup three times, Champions League (then European Cup) once and Europa League (then UEFA Cup) once.
• In January 1999, de Boer joined FC Barcelona. In five seasons at Barcelona, de Boer appeared in 144 matches and scored five goals. He finished his club playing career with stints at Galatasaray, Rangers, Al-Rayyan and Al-Shamal.
