The Pastor’s CornerDear Parishioners,

This Thursday, August 15, is the Feast of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a Holy Day of Obligation. This means that Catholics must attend Mass on this day unless they have a legitimate excuse. Our Masses are on Wednesday, August 14 at 7:00 p.m. (Vigil Mass) and on Thursday at 6:30 and 8:30 a.m., and 12:15 p.m.

In my 31 years as a priest, I have noticed that participation in Holy Day Masses has gradually decreased. The frequency with which the obligation is dispensed has also made it rather confusing for ordinary Catholics to know they are truly obliged to attend Mass on certain Holy Days. The rule adopted by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is that whenever the feasts of Mary, the Mother of God (January 1), the Assumption of Mary (August 15), or All Saints (November 1) falls on a Monday or a Saturday the obligation to attend Mass is dispensed. Christmas (December 25) and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8) are always obligatory on any day of the week. If December 8 falls on a Sunday, the feast is moved to December 9, in which case it is not obligatory to attend Mass. I told you it was confusing! In any case, the Feast the Assumption is obligatory this year.

This feast is a favorite of mine. It comes at the peak of summer. Everyone’s gardens are at their fullest, overflowing with produce and flowers. In art, Mary’s Assumption is often symbolized by a tomb which does not contain Mary’s body, but which is overflowing with blooming flowers. In more agrarian societies, the Feast of the Assumption was observed as a kind of early harvest festival. The liturgy of the feast gives a nod to this meaning when it quotes St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians saying “Christ has been raised from the dead, the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep.” The Feast of the Assumption was the traditional time for blessing herbs, fruits and garden produce.

I have noticed how beautiful the gardens are here at St. Andrew Parish, and I want to thank the Garden Club for their diligent and expert care of the gardens. I pray that Our Blessed Mother will smile upon all of you and bless you on her feast day.

I hope to see you all at the Festival! May God bless you all, Msgr. Stephan Moloney
