Health Law Institute
Health care professionals with an interest in combining their medical expertise
in the expanding field of health law can choose from three graduate programs in
Widener’s prestigious Health Law Institute.
The Health Law Institute, established in 1989, has received national
recognition for the excellence of its programs and has been ahead of
the curve on health law education. National surveys have ranked
Widener’s programs at the top of those offering graduate education in
health law. Health care organizations such as hospitals, insurance and
managed care companies, pharmaceutical companies, and
governmental agencies recognize the high quality of training received
by Widener’s graduate students.
Master of Jurisprudence (MJ) The Health Law Institute fosters graduate-level education. Students may choose to take the standard
online Master of Jurisprudence program or specialize their Master’s degree with one of the
following three concentrations:
Certificate in Legal Nurse Consulting & Hospital Regulatory Compliance
Certificate in Regulatory Analysis & Compliance
Certificate in Global Compliance & Ethics
MJ Faculty members offer not only a diverse range of specialties, but also a wealth of experience.
Our faculty are active in local, state, and federal health care efforts, and include past-presidents of
the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC), health care policy makers, and
compliance officers.
Master of Jurisprudence/Master of Public Health (MJ-MPH) In conjunction with Thomas Jefferson University, Widener also offers a Dual Master of
Jurisprudence in Health Law and Master of Public Health. Topics covered include patient
confidentiality, bioethics, risk management, and disability law. The dual degree is for those
interested in public health administration, health insurance organization leadership, health
consulting, or the pharmaceutical industry.
Doctor of Laws (DL) The Doctor of Laws is designed for graduates of either a Master of Jurisprudence (MJ) or a Master
of Juridical Science (MSJ) in Health Law program. This program engages students in exhaustive
research and immerses them in an individualized program while working towards the completion of
a dissertation.

OVERVIEW
The Master of Jurisprudence (MJ) in Health
Law (Standard Program) is designed for
health care and other professionals who
desire to expand their education and
broaden their understanding of the legal and
regulatory health care environment. It is one
of few such law school programs in the
country, offering a unique opportunity for
students to expand their employment
opportunities.
As with all of our MJ Degree programs, the
MJ Health Law degree is an online
program designed to accommodate the
working professional seeking to improve
employment opportunities or simply keep
pace with changing regulatory
requirements. The program requires 28
credit hours of course work and can be
completed in two academic years.
OBJECTIVE
Courses aim to educate students in all
aspects of the law, and enable them to assist
health law attorneys and other professionals
with transactional, litigation, and regulatory
work in hospitals, law firms, pharmaceutical
companies, biotechnology firms, insurance
companies, and health maintenance
organizations.

OVERVIEW
The Master of Jurisprudence (MJ) in Health
Law is designed for health care and other
professionals who desire to expand their
education and broaden their understanding of
the legal and regulatory health care
environment with a specific focus on
compliance issues. It is one of few such law
school programs in the country, offering a
unique opportunity for students to expand their
employment opportunities.
Widener Law School is one of only two law
schools accredited by the Compliance
Certification Board (CCB) for the Health
Care Compliance Association (HCCA).
Students are eligible to sit for the CHC
(Certified in Healthcare Compliance) national
exam upon successful completion of the
program.
OBJECTIVE
Courses aim to educate students for careers
working with management and legal counsel as
compliance officers and risk managers to fulfill
the regulatory compliance requirements of
health care and pharmaceutical organizations.
Students are prepared to work in regulatory
compliance analysis, risk management, and
contract negotiations. Within the capstone
course, students will work through simulations
to resolve compliance issues and mock exam
questions.

OVERVIEW
The Master of Jurisprudence (MJ) in Health Law
with a Certificate in Legal Nurse Consulting
(LNC) and Hospital Regulatory Compliance is
designed for nurses who hold a current BSN
license and who wish to advance their education
and career options in medical-legal settings and
broaden their understanding of the legal and
regulatory health care environment.
This graduate program seeks to prepare nurses in
two specialty areas:
The LNC Certificate exemplifies that the
holder has obtained the ABA-approved
special skills and medical knowledge
required to act as an independent nurse
consultant with legal knowledge required to
investigate health care issues.
The Certificate in Hospital Regulatory
Compliance provides students with an
understanding of health care policy and
regulations. Students are eligible to sit for the
Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC)
national exam upon successful completion of
the program.

A Widener Law Legal Nurse Consultant with a Master of Jurisprudence is an
experienced registered nurse who:
brings medical knowledge to the practice of law;
is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental
agency or other entity;
identifies standards of care, causation and damages issues;
locates and retains expert witnesses;
assists with depositions and trials, develops and prepares exhibits; and,
develops medical chronologies.
A Widener graduate Nurse practicing in the field of Hospital Regulatory Compliance
with a Master of Jurisprudence is an experienced registered nurse who:
performs specialized administrative responsibilities pertaining the hospital
is experienced in the areas of regulatory compliance, hospital billing, and
reimbursement;
utilizes knowledge of health law, nursing, and administrative practices;
ensures compliance with current governing rules and regulations required for
health care organizations; and,
applies regulatory standards involved in direct patient care.

OVERVIEW
The Master of Jurisprudence (MJ) in Health
Law with a Certificate in Global Compliance
and Ethics is a master’s degree program
designed for those seeking graduate-level
education in legal analysis and global
regulatory compliance and ethics for careers
working with international health care
corporations, business, non-profit, or govern-
ment entities.
OBJECTIVE
Courses aim to educate students in global
health care organizations, corporate and
health law regulatory compliance, and global
health systems. Students will develop an
understanding of health care quality
standards, transactions, and ethics. Within the
Global Capstone course, students will work
through simulations to resolve global
compliance issues and mock-exam questions
for the Compliance Certification Board’s
(CCB) exam to become a Certified Corporate
and Ethics Professional—International (CCEP
-I) ®. A CCEP-I is someone with knowledge
of relevant international regulations and
expertise in compliance processes sufficient
to assist organizations with their legal
obligations, and someone who promotes
organizational integrity through the operation
of effective compliance programs.

General Information
COURSES
Online courses are scheduled in Fall and Spring semesters, which run for 15 weeks, and
Summer semesters which are 8 weeks in length. A course module may contain a reading
assignment, video lecture, discussion thread, quiz, essay writing assignment, exam, or a
combination of these assignments.
EXTERNSHIPS
The MJ program offers Health Law Externships in a variety of settings, including, but not
limited to, for-profit and non-profit health care organizations and administrative and
government agencies. Externships are open to students who have successfully completed
their first-year courses and are great opportunities to gain practical skills while earning
credits toward graduation.
ELIGIBILITY
A Bachelor’s degree is required. Applicants preferably will have recent or current
professional employment in health care or a closely related field.
TUITION
The tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year is $994 per credit. (Subject to change.)
Financial aid is available for qualified students.

The Master of Jurisprudence in Health Law is a degree that was created by Widener University School

How quickly can I complete the program?
Students generally complete the 28-credit program in two years, but with permission, may be able to
complete the program at a slower or faster pace.
Are online courses easier than on-campus courses?
No. The content of online courses is identical to that of on-campus classes.
How much time per week should I expect to spend on my degree?
We advise students to expect to spend an equal amount of time as a seated class. For example, a three
hour seated class would require reading, preparation for class, listening to lectures, completing
assignments, and answering class discussions.
Is the program accredited?
The Widener University School of Law Master of Jurisprudence program is accredited by the Middle
States Commission on Higher Education as well as the American Bar Association's Section of Legal
Education and Admissions to the Bar. Widener Law is a Compliance Certification Board (CCB)
“accredited institution,” and is proud to announce that it is one of only two law schools in the country to
have earned this distinction.
