DIRECTOR’S NOTES

7

Since its 1791 premiere, Mozart's The Magic Flute has been one of the most beloved works in the operatic repertoire and why not, with a dragon opening the 1st act chasing a hand-some prince who is searching for the kid-napped princess with his kooky sidekick, overcoming the evil Queen and seeking truth and justice. The storyline sounds like a cur-rent hit movie. Technically not an opera but a singspiel (sing/play) The Magic Flute in-cludes dialogue and familiar melodies that are easy to sing and arias that are almost impossible to sing. Composing for his sister-in-law, Mozart wrote the role of the Queen of the Night for her extraordinary voice incorporating 4 high “F’s” above high “C” in her famous vengeance aria. Her arch ene-my, Sarastro moves to the other end of the range singing low “F’s”.

The symbolism in The Magic Flute is a Dan Brown fan’s dream with 3 as the magic number in the story...3 Spirits, 3 Ladies, 3 Couples, 3 Tests. Symbolism also runs deep as Mozart and his original Papageno, Shikaneder, (who was also the librettist) were Masonic brothers. But more importantly the music illustrates what sets Mozart apart and keep-ing his works alive today—his understanding of humanity.

Tonight’s performance includes nationally award winning singers/actors from Missouri Western's Department of Music and joins in its third year of collaboration with artists/animators from the Department of Art and talented students from Western's Theater/Cinema area in this spectacu-lar show combining animation and live performance.

A “SPIRITED” PRESS RELEASE

PRESS RELEASE October 23, 2013

*For immediate release PLATTE CITY, Mo. – It’s not very often that young students have the op-portunity to perform in a well-known, fully-staged opera, but that’s exactly what happened for three Platte County R-3 boys. Henry Lange and Andrew Ivy, both 6th graders at Platte City Middle School, and Spencer Cupp, a 5th grader at Paxton Elementary, will portray “The Three Spirits” in Mozart’s opera “The Magic Flute” at Missouri West-ern State University under the direction of Dr. Susan Carter. The opportuni-ty came when Paxton music teacher Jennifer Stammers was contacted by a Missouri Western voice major who had heard the Paxton Singers perform at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Missouri Verses and Voices Poet Laureate Festival back in April. “I received a message from an MWSU student this summer saying he’d heard the Paxton Singers perform on stage at Helzberg Hall and was very impressed by their sound and maturity,” said Stammers. “He wanted to know if I had any boys who would be able to sing the important roles of ‘The Three Spirits’ in the ‘Magic Flute.’ Even though girls could sing the roles if necessary, Mozart wrote the music for boys’ voices. Henry, Andrew and Spencer immediately came to mind!” These students are not new to performing. All three were in Platte County High School’s 2012 production of “A Christmas Carol: The Musical.” Cupp portrayed the role of ‘Tiny Tim,’ Lange portrayed ‘Jonathan’ and Ivy was in the chorus. Both Lange and Ivy performed in stage musicals this past sum-mer and are in the 6th grade Prelude Honor Choir under the direction of Mr. Brice Willson at PCMS. All three boys are two-year members of the Paxton Singers under the direction of Mrs. Stammers.

“These boys are stage veterans at the ripe-old-ages of 11 and 12,” chuckled Stammers, who has been working with them the past few weeks to learn the challenging three-part harmony. “They are also hams – which will play per-fectly into this fantasy opera!” she said. “I can’t wait for people to hear them. The difficulty of the music they are singing is so far beyond what most people think kids can do.”

-Jennifer Stammers

ANIMATION NOTES

Students and instructors spent over 15 weeks this summer developing the background scenes for the Magic Flute. The process to de-velop the backgrounds includes: concept and storyboard development, 3-D modeling or sculpting of the scenes with-in the virtual en-vironment, texture mapping which is a process of painting the sculpted environments, virtual lighting of the environment, character setup a process of creating skeletons to move the char-acters, layout, animation or the art of moving characters in their environment, FX develop-ment, rendering the sequence and final compo-siting everything together. A great deal of time and talent went into creating the back-grounds.
