Last Michigan Opera Theatre production of The Mikado: November 1991. Featuring Jeffrey Lentz, Zale Kessler and Mary Callaghan Lynch. Conducted by Suzanne Acton and directed by Greg Ganakas.

Director’s Notes It is always a great pleasure to come back to a work in my repertory that I know will hold many pleasures for both performers and audiences alike. It is also very special when that piece is one that I don’t get the opportunity to work on as often as I would like. The Mikado is one such piece and this is only the third time in my twenty year career that I have had the great fortune to direct one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most witty and popular pieces. When The Mikado first premiered on March 14, 1885 in London, it ran at the Savoy Theatre for 672 performances; this was the second longest run for any work of musical theatre and one of the longest runs of any theatre piece up to that time. By the end of 1885 it was estimated that at least 150 companies were producing the opera in Europe and America. So, what accounts for the incredible popularity of the piece? Like many of the other works in the G & S canon, The Mikado manages to satirize British politics and institutions with a cutting wit that few before or since have been able to do. The biting lyrics of W. S. Gilbert and the sometimes truly sublime music of Arthur Sullivan attain a level of sophistication almost unequaled in the lyric theatre. By clothing their piece in the guise of an exotic locale, in this case the fictional town of Titipu in Japan, Gilbert and Sullivan were able to take aim at the very people that flocked to see their shows. But the essence of their genius is in how timely their work still is even today. At the heart of The Mikado is a story of moral repression and class structure, things that we still encounter on a day-to-day basis. Let’s face it; there is as much talk about death, torture and execution in The Mikado as we hear in an hour of news reporting on CNN! Of course these very serious subjects are couched in a series of brilliant parodies and wordplay thereby rendering the serious nature of the subject almost unnoticeable. But it is these very subjects that also make the piece so relevant today--all the more so because of the tradition of changing lyrics and adding verses to Ko-Ko’s brilliant “List Aria” in Act One and the title character’s second act aria “A more humane Mikado.” Allow me to thank my incredibly talented choreographer Dan Knechtges who worked side-by-side with me these past few weeks to create the staging, my brilliant lighting designer Chris Rynne and our wonderful conductor Mark Flint. This show would not be what it is without their unflagging support and dedication. And I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to acknowledge Michigan Opera Theatre’s General Director David DiChiera and not only thank him for assembling the brilliant cast of singing actors you are about to see and for trusting me to create this production with them, but to congratulate him on the honor of being named one of this year’s recipients of the prestigious National Endowments for the Arts Award. I know you will all join me in saluting him on receiving this honor and wish him all the best as we open the 40th Anniversary season of this very special company. Now please sit back and enjoy. I hope we are able to give you as much pleasure watching the show as we have had preparing it. —Michael Scarola, Stage Director

The Concordia Orchestra of New York City commissioned Too Hot

To Handel in 1993, from arrangers Bob Christianson and Gary Anderson. Since the first performance at Lincoln Center, crowds have smiled, cheered and danced in their seats (and sometimes in the aisles!). Too Hot captures the essential core of Handel’s famous masterwork and reinterprets it with chords of rhythm and blues, jazz and gospel. The end result? A dynamic and uplifting celebration that must be experienced. Simply put: Too Hot To Handel is Messiah re-created.

Music on loan from the archives of the Concordia Orchestra, Marin Alsop, founding music director and conductor.

THE AVANTI SOCIETY MEMBERSEnsuring the Future

Imagine a gift that outlives you—that touches future generations in your absence—to experience

and enjoy the world of opera. That’s the goal of the Avanti Society, Michigan Opera Theatre’s Planned Gift Recognition Program. The Avanti Society represents a designated group of friends of Michigan Opera Theatre who have made plans to include the organization in their estate plans—whether by will, trust, insurance, or life income arrangement. Membership in the Avanti Society is open to all. Members of the Avanti Society receive a beautifully designed lapel pin, recognition at the annual Avanti Evening and invitations to special events and performances, and are listed as members in our program books throughout each season.

AN AVANti for tomorroW The growth of Michigan Opera Theatre’s permanent Endowment Fund ensures the growth and future vitality of one of the region’s greatest cultural assets. You are invited to create your own legacy—your Avanti—through Michigan Opera Theatre. You may use the attached confidential reply card to indicate your gift, or contact Kim-Lan Trinh at (313) 237-3408 to discuss gift options that may benefit you, your heirs and Michigan Opera Theatre.

Contributors to Michigan Opera Theatre’s Campaign to Restore the Detroit Opera House Michigan Opera Theatre extends appreciation to the many donors who contributed so generously to the three phases of the Detroit Opera House fundraising initiative from 1989 to 2004. Following is a cumulative listing of gifts of $5,000 and above to The Capital Campaign to Restore the Detroit

Opera House (1989 – 1998), The New Century Fund Campaign (1999 – 2001) and The Crowning Achievement Campaign (2002 –2004). We also thank the many donors who contributed gifts below $5,000 for their commitment and belief in the Detroit Opera House project.

Just Do It! When it comes to getting the work done at the Detroit Opera House, Floy and Lee Barthel sound like an ad for Nike shoes: “Just Do It.” It is a motto that has been followed through in the last 23 years or so that they have been involved with Michigan Opera Theatre. From capital improvements, tables and chairs, air conditioning system improvements to lighting and supertitles, lockers for musi-cians and costume shop, there is no task too small or too big that Floy and Lee would not tackle. In addition, the Barthels volunteer on

the MOT Board of Directors, contribute as Dance Patron Circle and General Director’s Circle members, serve as MOT Volunteer Association members and perform numerous other functions. As the owners of

Barthel Contracting Company, Floy and Lee were the recipients of the generosity of others who gave of their time and money before they became active in MOT. “Because of the way others invested in us, we feel we should do the same for those who follow us to help ensure the future of this important venue. If we

don’t do this, opera and ballet may disappear from Detroit,” said Lee. With 40 years of exciting perfor-mances and world class artists, MOT could not be the thriving, well-respected organization that it is without special donors such as Floy and Lee Barthel, who firmly believe that without the financial support of many, world-class opera and ballet may not survive in Detroit.

“ Thank you, Floy and Lee, for all that you’ve done for MOT.” – David DiChiera.

Note: Floy and Lee Barthel are members of the Avanti Society, MOT’s group of friends who have made arrangements to include MOT in their estate plans.

Tribute to David Handleman The single most important consideration in David Handleman’s decision to under-write the Educational Resource Center at the Detroit Opera House and to endow the educational programs that take place in that space was his passion for arts education and MOT General Director David DiChiera. We are of course talking about the late David Handleman, of Handleman Company in Troy, whose beginning in wholesale distribution of pharmaceuticals later evolved to cover computer soft-ware, videotape and book distribution. Charlene Handleman, his wife, speaks fondly of him. “David believed in arts education and loved the arts. We rarely went out in the evening. Instead, we talked. He was so very impressed with the hard work of David and Karen V. DiChiera and their educational programs. He was excited by the growing interest and participation by the city in this program, not just the core opera fans.” And so, because of the vision of our special donor, MOT now has the Marion and David Handleman Community Center for Lifelong Learning in the Arts, complete with classrooms, performance spaces, and a media studio, where each year dozens of Handleman scholars will be able to participate in Arts Education.

“ Thank you, Charlene, for sharing the memories and the thoughts. Thank you, David, for your vision, your passion, and your generosity; you are truly missed.” – David DiChiera

Note: David Handleman was a member of the Avanti Society, MOT’s group of friends who have made arrangements to include MOT in their estate plans.

VolunteersGreetings from the Michigan Opera Theatre Volunteer Association! As we enjoy a 40th year of world class performances here at Michigan Opera Theatre, we want to take a moment to once again thank our volunteers. Our volunteer membership continues to be the “heart” of Michigan Opera Theatre. Their countless efforts help this organization maintain its rightful place as one of Detroit’s fi nest cultural treasures. Michigan Opera Theatre truly appreciates the support of its volunteer members who are critical to the success of each season. There are so many who contribute in such a variety of ways – the hosts of our opening night dinners, cast parties and soirees, our committees who create our hallmark BravoBravo! event, our resident historians who conduct our Opera House tours, and of course, our extraordinary corps of ushers. To each of you as well as the many volunteers who support us through your generous gift of time and resources, please accept our sincere gratitude. There isn’t a better way to perpetuate Detroit’s opera and dance scene than by engaging in one of our many volunteer groups. So, how can you get involved? By becoming a member! Your tax-deductible membership entitles you to participate in as many of the individual volunteer groups as you wish. If you would like to join our organization, please contact us and we will help you engage with the groups of your choice. We look forward to working with you and thank you for your interest and involvement in the Michigan Opera Theatre Volunteer Association. Enjoy this season as we focus on honoring the past and launching the future!

Steven MarletteMOTVA President
