    Architect's or Client's Building?Dear Editor:

    We propose to construct a small office for the permanent home of ourcompany. We would like for our building to be distinctive enough that it willbecome a symbol of identification.

    We have some very positive ideas about how this building should bearranged and how it should look. We definitely want a colonial building withcolumns at the entrance.

    We have consulted with two architects of good reputation and each hasdeclined to serve us. They say that it is their responsibility to design thebuilding rather than to simply draw up what we tell them to.Before we approach a third architect, we would like to have the positionof architects clarified.

    Should the architect design what he wants or what we want?

    Fortunately there are no rules set up to control the design aspect ofarchitecture. Each architect is free to design according to the dictates of hisconvictions. However, it is a rare case if he is granted license to design whathe alone wants, to the exclusion of what his client wants. After all, the clienthas to state the program hefore the architect can go to work. Ideally, theresults of his efforts should be what each wants.

    More directly to the point, I have no doubt that you can find someonewho will simply draw up what you tell him to , but I advise against it. I sug-gest that you go back to the first architect you contacted and ask for a designrather than dictating one.

    H he is a good designer, and he probahly is or you wouldn't have goneto him in the fir st place, then he will not ignore your ideas and your dedica-tion to colonial buildings. Rather, he will use your ideas in combinationwith his to develop your primary program requirement: " a building distinc-tive enough to hecome a symbol of identification" fo r your company. Trulydistinctive huildings are seldom if ever the result of design by the untrainedor of copies from the past.

    NursingT HE Gilioy School of ursing ha s been completed as Phase I of a current long-rangeexpansion program by the Mississippi Bapti tHospital, Jackson, Miss. The design criteria Iequired th e use of an existing reinforced concreteframe dormitory as an integral part of the solution. The entire complex was to be so situatedthat parking would be provided for 40 automobiles with vehicular acces through th e site. Sufficient building area was to be reserved for futureconstruction fronting on Fortification Street.

    The building criteria called fo r a school toaccommodate 200 nurses, providing the followingfacilities:1. 100- 2 occupant bedrooms with 1 bath serv-in g 2 rooms or 4 gil-] .2. Small clinical facilities fo r dormitory.3. Study lounge each floor of dormitory.4. Trunk storage and domestic laundry facilities.5. Date lounge and living room which couldbe comb ined for large function.6. House mother and assistant house motherquarters7. A lecture hall to seat 120 people that could

    T HE trend to marble is growing rapidly in modern suburban banking institutions throughout thecountry. An example of this increasing preferencefor richer and more enduring materials in suburbanareas is the six-story office building of Loyola Federal Savings & Loan Association , recently erected inTowson, Maryland. Marble gives the structure an airof dignified elegance formerly associated only withcentral city banks.

    The entire first floor areas of the banking roomand lobby, as well as the rear entrance and corridor,are of Vermont Marble Company's Pavanazzo. Thismarble was chosen also for an outdoor bench in thebeautifully landscaped entrance plaza.Vermont Marble's Verde Accelgio, selected for afloor-to-ceiling partition wall between the entrancelobby and elevator lobby, presents an accent of richdecor to one entering the building. This same marblewas employed in a four-foot-high panel near theexterior left front corner of the building's groundfloor.

    Loyola Federal's Towson Branch occupies nearlyall of the first floor of the building, while the upperfive floors are devoted to rental office space. Basicconstruction of the 49 ,850 square foot structure issteel frame with pre-cast concrete plank floor. Exterior is pre-cast panels with aluminum windows.Wilson & Christie, Associated Architects.

    A NEW Caribbean landmark exists in one of theworld 's largest aluminumdomed storage shedsin Rocky Point, Jamaica, created to hasten Alcoashipment s of aluminum ore needed to meet an expanding demand for the light metal.

    Cresting 100 feet above a sealevel coral reef, thegiant umbrella of aluminum alloy tubing and sheet,300 feet in diameter , protects dr ied bauxite which isheld for transport to Aluminum Comp any of Ame rica 's refining plant at Poin t Comfort, Texas.Representing a unique innovation in an unceasingeffort to improve mining an d ore.handling efficiency,the domed design of the storage facility affords avas t un obstructed shelter from which automatedconveyors can speed ore into a ship hold at the

    rate of 2,000 tons an hour.Alcoa Minerals of Jamaica, In c., the subsi diarywhich specified the dome as a key element in arecentlycompleted $16.5 million open pit miningcomplex, said the circular structure grea tly mini

    mized the ground area a conventional rectangularbuilding would have required. Dredging of coralfill , piling and rela ted site preparation requirementcosts were thus reduced considerably.The dome's convex framework employs 158 tonsof structural aluminum tubing. Equivalent to 4%

    pounds per square foot of floor area , the tube isjoined into a latticework of triangles supporting a90ton roof coverin g of aluminum alloy sheet. Arectangular steel storage structure, affording but halfthe dome's unobstructed width and height , wouldhave required a 900ton steel fr ame equivalent to25 pounds per square foot of ground area .

    Alcoa' s Lafayette (Ind. ) and Cressona (Pa. )operations fabricated the lOinch diameter alloy6062T6 tubing for the intricate framing of thedome. The roof panels of Alclad 6061 T6 sheet wererolled at the company's Davenport (Iowa) Works.Workmen operating from pipe scaffolding, mountedon a rotating truss within the building itself , boltedthe sub assembled frame sections into place pr ior tothe sheeting operation.

    As novel as the dome itself is, a bauxite handlingand reclaiming system makes possible the completerecover y of all stored ore without the use of scrapers, bulldozers, or other supplementary equipment .5

    E STABLISHMENT of the construction industry's first"hall of fame" was announced by HarnischfegerCorporation.Created to honor the nation's leading contractors,the hall will display the portraits of America's mostsuccessful cons truction executives. I t will be locatedin the company's recently opened research center inMilwaukee.

    In honor of the hall and the men named to it, thecompany has named the building "Progress Hall."Announcement of the creation of the hall of famewas made by president Henry Harnischfeger at theannual Construction an d Mining Division meetingin Chicago.

    Corporation president Henry Harnischfeger alsoannounced the appointment of seven contractors asinitial honorees into Progress Hall.

    "I am confident," said president Harnischfeger,"that these seven men and those who follow will

    serve as an inspiration to the industry , our engineersand everyone who visits Progress Hall. By establish-ing this display we honor our partners in this indus-try, the contractor. Without these partners our equip-ment could do little to achieve the progress thatmarks this nation's dynamic growth.

    "Through sound management practices an d imagi-native utilization of materials, they have demon-strated their true leadership in the heavy construc-tion industry. Our role of developing an d buildingbetter equipment is just one step in providing thisnation with the dams, buildings, roads an d struc-tures it needs. In the hands of men like these anengineer's fondest dreams have become reality."

    The portraits of the seven men, along with appro-priate legends, will be permanently displayed atProgress Hall. Harnischfeger Corporation plans toname additional leading contractors annually to thehall of fame.

    WELLS FARGO BUILDINGCONSTRUCTION of the Wells Fargo Building is infull swing and will continue to be until readyfor tenants in the summer of 1966. See photo atright.

    The official announcement of the $20,000,000building took place on May 27, 1963, when it became known that the owner and developer would beDillingham Corporation of San Francisco, a subsidiary of Dillingham Corporation, Honolulu, Hawaii. Haas and Haynie Corp., was named generalcontractor at the same time.

    The Wells Fargo Bank holds title to the land andhas awarded a long term lease on the site to Dillingham. The Nevada Bank Building, now occupied bythe bank at the corner of Montgomery and Market,will be removed in 1965 and in its place will be builta three-story, glass-walled banking hall, integratedarchitecturally with the 43-story office tower risingfrom the Montgomery-Sutter corner. This lower element will house part of the Market-MontgomeryStreet office of the Wells Fargo Bank, continuingalmost 60 years of banking service at this location.See photo below.

    The present construction phase consists of furthersite preparation to allow for excavation for the subbasement, about 20 feet below the MontgomeryStreet level. Then driving of foundation piles willtake place, followed by the erection of the steelframe. By the end of the year all structural steelshould be in place, and a start made on pouring theconcrete columns and floors.Construction and long-term financing is being furnished by the Equitable Life Assurance Society ofthe United States, and her long-time San Franciscoreal estate firm of Walter H. Sullivan & Sons hasbeen named leasing agents.Dillingham Corporation's other interests in California are the Plaza Hotel on Union Square alongwith adjacent property on Stockton Street.

    I NDUSTRIAL ACCOUSTICS COMPANY, INC. ha s openeda new 6,OOO-sq. ft. laboratory in New York Cityfor research in noise control problems and aco ustically controlled environments.

    "It is probably the la rgest aero-aco ustic facility inthe sound con trol field ," said lAC President MartinHirschorn , "and is unique in bringing together under one roof coordinated airflow and aco ustic facilities for research, design and product development.I t is also the only laboratory with facilities for airflow noise regeneration studies," he added.The laboratory is equiped to study acoustic nOIseand environmental control problems in many areasincluding :

    Architectural structu res such as doors, panels,windows and complete rooms or houses for indoor and outdoor applications.

    Air conditioning and air handling systems ingeneral.

    Industrial power plant mufflers. Jet engine noise suppressors. Silencing of diesel engines, generator sets, gas

    turbines, electric motors, machinery and personal enclosures. Hearing conservation programs. Anechoic and reverberant rooms.

    devices and engine power indicators.This laboratory is the offshoot of a smaller one

    wh ich was operated by lAC for over 12 years. Inthe latter , lAC applied and refined its research knowhow in the development of architectural acousticpanels, industrial and ai r conditioning silencers, je tengine noise suppressors, soundproof machinery enclosures and completely equipped modular soundproof rooms for medical and other applications.

    Materials testing in Industrial Acoustics Company'snew labo(atory is aided bysuch equipment as imped-ance tube for measuringpercentage of noise ab -'sorbed by materials. Here,a research engineer insertsa sample of a material intorear of th e tube. A pure-tone (or discrete frequency)will be generated at op-posite end.

    lAC's new laboratory includes the following facilities:

    1. Two inter-connecting reverberant rooms witha volume of 3,000 cu. ft. and 3,600 cu. ft. respectively and a 4' x 8' opening to test the sound transmission loss of architectural panels up to that size.

    2. Semi-anechoic room with a volume of 8,000cu. ft.

    3. A 100-ft.-Iong airflow tunnel discharging withreverberant or anechoic termination. Test sectionsup to 24" X 24" can be accommodated. This tunnelcan also be used for static tests. Tunnel is designedto study the regeneration of noise due to ai r flow.

    Headquarters For RocketdyneROCKETDYNE, a division of No rth American Aviation , Inc. , ha s ac tivated its new headquartersbuildin g, a four-sto ry structure designed to matchthe performance record of the company's space engines.

    "Streamlined fun ctionalism has been the architectural guid elin e from concep t to completion of thisbuilding, " declared Kenneth Nep tun e, A.LA.Under construction for the last year at the southwest co rner of Canoga Avenu e and Victory Bouleva rd in Canoga Park on a 10-acre portion of theold Warner Ranch , the new building overlooks theDivision 's ad jacen t plants.

    It houses the management team which has divi sion-wide responsibility for support and po licy direction of Rocketdyne's development and production ofrocket engines. More than 90 per cent of all UnitedStates space vehicles, including the astronaut-mannedMercury mi ssiles, have used Rocketdyne engines.The building has made possible the geographica lunifica tion of overall management functions, and

    the separation of such activities from those directedat specific product ta rgets.

    Nep tune designed the building to sit atop a fourfoot high pedestal with sheer curtain walls of ca th edr al glass rising skyward at the front and rear ofthe building. The east an d west ends of the buildingare masonry, built of oversized brick set in a precise pattern an d painted slate gray .The building has a dimension of 91% feet by 156feet, no t including a one-story ex trusion, and produces 60,000 gross square feet of space.

    It features an en trance portico and 30-foot wideterraces at the front , west side and rear. Terracesare topped with white cement and finished with ametal gri d pattern.

    Seen from a short distance, the building's glasscurtain walls appear to be broken only by five support columns and the anodized bright aluminumvertical mullions which set a rhythmic pattern.

    This optical, illusion , Neptune said, results fromthe fact that the horizontal mullions are anod izedblack and fade into the opaque of the glass.
