In th e heart of New Orleans' famous French Quarter thisancient structure .. becomes a smart new motel, with traditional French flavor

    retained,

After 120 Years:Old Building In French QuarterBecomes Sparkling New Motel

V ISITORS to the renowned French Quarter of NewOrleans can now see a remarkable blend ofthe new and the traditional-a new motel whichembodies such modern features as a swimming pool, air conditioning and valet parking, yet retains thetypically French Quarter atmosphere which hasmade the Rue Chartres one of New Orleans' mostfamous streets.this transformation of an ancient structure intoa brand new, useful motor hotel has involvedrestoration of a building which many had thoughtwas beyond repair. Built back in the 1840's by thedescendant of a French Count, the building wasoriginally quaint an d charming. But over the yearsit slowly disintegrated into something of an eye-sore.

Just recently, this property was purchased byJames M. Clair and Gerald E. Senner with the ideaof renovating it for use as a French Quarter Motel.Could they redesign the building into a motel, with-out destroying the flavor of this section of the RueChartres? The result, as can be seen here, is adelightful blend of traditional New Orleans (forexample, the grille work has been kept intact) andnew design which is most attractive an d also func-tionally sound. The contractor used gypsum wall-board on all interior walls and ceilings, achievingan effect of simplicity and good taste.Typically French with its courtyard patio foun-tains, balconies and awnings, the new Chateau mo-tel has spared no detail in providing authenticallystyled furnishings in keeping with the "GoldenAge" of New Orleans' past.

Construction is under way today for a $2 million window.less laboratory at the Lockheed-California Company plantin Burbank. The reinforced concrete an d steel structure i.designed to insure the accuracy of the company 's 30.000quality control measurement instruments and to test ai rborne-slated electronic equipment.

LOCKHEED BREAKS GROUND FOR $2 MILLIONQUALITY ASSURANCE LABORATORY BUILDINGL OCKHEED-CALIFORNIA Company has started construction of a $2 million laboratory in Burbank, California that will insure the microscopicaccuracy of its 30,000 measurement in strumentsand test electronic equipment for airplanes orspacecraft.

The steel and reinforced concrete building ofcontemporary design will house measurementequipment to ca librate and service electr ica l, electronic, linear, mechanica l, optical , microwave, forceand mass {weights and loads}, hydraulic, an d temperature reliability control inst ruments.

Through openings in the roof, gyro laboratoryinstruments will "shoot" the North Star {Polaris }to set an d tes t inertial navigation equipment withan accuracy of a quarter inch to 10 miles.

Vibration-free, the 16-foot deep basement will bebolstered by nine-inch thick walls. It will contain anumber of "clean " rooms {free from harmful dust, moisture, fumes} and "screen" rooms {shieldedagainst outside electric and ma'gnetic fields } forprecision measurements.

The ground level floor will be devoted to production testing of electronic equipment before in-

    7

stallation in aircraft. In the six environment-controlled clean rooms,

dust specks as minute as one micron-about 1000ththe size of a grain of sand-will be filtered out.

While inside the rooms, women will wear nomake-up (powder presents a problem ) . Graphitepencils will not be allowed-just ballpoint pens.Even the room co rners will be rounded to preventdust accumulation. Equipment will be cleaned ultrasonically- dipped in a chemical solution agitatedby hi gh frequency sound waves to literally shakeloose any clinging forei gn matter.

Entry into the clean rooms will be via ai r locksto maintain temperature and humidity-drynesscontrol. An "air shower" at the entrance will remove dust. Smocks will cover street clothes. Gloveswill be worn when handling such items as precisiongau ge blocks because of skin moisture problems. In the basement will be two steel-shielded screen

rooms-one of which is actually a room within aroom-for electronic and ma gnetic instruments. The building was designed and plans preparedby The Austin Company in line with Lockheedconcepts.

A dramatic eHect Is achieved by th e us e of Red Veronamarble in both polished and split.face finishes. This distinctive contrast exemplifie& the unusual decoratinq eHectswhich are possible with varyinq marble finishes. as wellas varieties.

A maqnificent circular stairway wall of polished RedVerona marble extends from this lower level to the ceilinqof the first floor main bankinq room.

T HE RECENTLY COMPLETED Wells Fargo BankAmerican Trust Company headquarters in SanFrancisco provides its customers with a dramaticyet functional facility which has generated manyfavorable comments. Designed by the architecturalfirm of Ashley, Keyser and Runge, San Francisco, this new building features several marble varietiesfor interior applications.

Perhaps the most unique effect, created by designer Clifford J. Conly, Jr., AlA, is achieved bythe use of Red Verona marble in both polished andsplit.face finishes. The highly polished finish isused on a circular stairway wall which extendsfrom the b a s e ~ e n t level to the ceiling of the firstfloor main banking room. In preparing the marblefor this wall, the panels were first cut from solidstock to a true radius, then all segments were setup and polished together in the shop to achieve atrue distortionfree surface. In addition, the highlypolished finish is employed on door an d windowmullions an d trim.

In dramatic contrast is the "quarry.like" split.face finish which dominates the wall behind theAn imposinq splitface marble wall behind the main bankinq counter qives an unusual "quarrylike" eHect to thisarea . The &arne marble- pattern. Red Verona. Is featured ina polished finish on the adjacent wall.

main banking counter. A spli t-face 11,4" Red Verona marble was mounted on a %" Travertine backing to make panels of proper size and thickness sothat conven tional setting methods could be followed. According to the Marble Institute of America, this dramatic comb ination of finishes lends anunusually distinctive touch to the interior space;one that opens up un told future design possibilities.Still further contrast is achieved th rough theuse of honed-finish Roman Traveritne columns withbases of Belgian Black marble. The columns, each3'6" in diameter and 23feet hi gh, are featuredthroughout the main lobby floor.Belgian Black marble serves additionally for baseand tops of banking counters, while wainscottingon the main cir cular counters and the unusual circular check desks are of Roman Travertine.

As the MIA points out in its recently published,"Marble F or The Modern Bank," marble is gen-erally preferred for the creation of modern monumental architecture. Certainly this statement isdramatically substantiated at the new Wells FargoAmerican Trust Company headquarters.
