Dear Friends,

The 2011-2012 school year was one filled with enthusiasm and optimism as we continue the legacy of our fine institution. We are built on Tradition- and through this tradition we will succeed and progress in all facets of education. Our pride lies in the spirit of our students, alumni, parents, faculty and staff and those that care deeply about providing the highest quality education. We are the school of choice! We are Angels and we are Hilltoppers! We are Carmelite and we are Franciscan!

Through our Strategic Planning initiative, set to launch for the years spanning 2013-2018, the following vision statement was formed as a definition of JCA expectations not only for the next five years but for many years to follow:

“Joliet Catholic Academy is a school of opportunity…a beacon of light for all. We live Carmelite and Franciscan values, think critically, partner with families, engage the community, and champion Christian Servant leadership, while igniting passion and enthusiasm for life’s journey.”

We want our students to graduate as faith-filled, intelligent, well-rounded young men and women that represent themselves, their family and their school with pride and respect in the community as well as in the classroom. It is with your help and support that we can build on our vision and maintain the excellence that is expected at Joliet Catholic Academy.

We know these are still challenging economic times, but we must keeping moving forward. Our Wi-Fi initiative from last year was but a bridge to new technology in our classrooms. Through the generosity of our donors, we are able to follow our Technology Plan and equip teachers and students with the proper technology to move them to their college choice and careers. We let our curriculum drive technology and we give our students the proper skills to make history.

It is with heartfelt gratitude that I thank you for your support of our JCA students. Your investment pays dividends as your gift is an investment in our future. We are in this together – and together we will build our Tradition.

Dear Alumni and Friends,

The JCA Institutional Advancement team originated in the 2011-2012 school year. The staff of nine cover many aspects of our school - from building relationships with the 16,000+ alumni, recruiting new Angels and Hillmen, to telling our story to our stakeholders and closing the gap of a million dollars in our operating budget.

As a team, we focused on incorporating best practices into our roles. We visited different schools and attended a variety of workshops to better understand our jobs and learn techniques to consistently bring about significant results in our work. We were in search for lessons of excellence and new ways to utilize technology to the fullest benefit, maximizing budget dollars.

After all, isn’t that what you, our investor, expect of us?

I personally take to heart the importance of great stewardship when it comes to our investors’ donations to our academy. Whether you are a parent, teacher, volunteer, coach, mentor or investor, the success of this school falls in all our hands. It is an awesome responsibility to carry on the victory light of tradition that has walked the halls of St. Francis Academy, DeLaSalle High School,

Joliet Catholic High School and Joliet Catholic Academy.

Thank you for trusting in our mission enough to have invested over $1 million this past school year. We have worked hard to put that money to use, achieving the following results:

• 15,000 community service hours completed by our students• 1 perfect ACT score, with mean ACT score of 26.2 for top 50% of the class of 2012• 30 Illinois State Scholars• Nearly $9 million offered in college scholarships• 1 endowed and 2 scholarships added to a list of 43+• $400,000 tuition assistance given to students• 209 students assisted with financial aid

Operationally we:• Added close to $500,000 to the operating budget with an increase in enrollment• Replaced 57 year old hallway ceiling and lighting• Added campus-wide WiFi• Installed a new brick baseball backstop• Created policies and procedures to reconcile all donations across the JCA departments • Consolidated all donations under one database – Sustain• Created policies and procedures for database management of donors and advancement initiatives• Launched a new website

Scholarships play a major role in providing necessary funding for Joliet Catholic Academy students. More than 30% of the JCA student body receives financial assistance from scholarships and grants. These valuable and vital sources of funding come through both endowed and annual scholarships given by generous donors who understand the value of a JCA education and believe in the future of our students.

Alumni, parents, and friends establish named scholarships for many reasons – to perpetuate the memory of a loved one, to recognize what the school has done for them and to give back to their alma mater, to support programs of special interest or to give financial aid to JCA students in need. This charitable act provides assistance to those students who meet the individual criteria of each scholarship. With tuition and fees exceeding $10,700 per student, these scholarships can make the difference of whether or not a student is able to afford a JCA education.

Giving BackBaratta Family Foundation

Formed to make difference at JCA

One person. One simple act of kindness. Sometimes, that is all it takes.Vincent Baratta (’80) attended St. Andrew in Romeoville before coming to Joliet Catholic High School. Once he walked the hallways as a freshman, he was hooked on being part of the Hillmen tradition. But along the way, he was that person in need. “Somehow, the tuition got paid over my four years,” Baratta recalled. “Some weeks, it would be my dad giving me an envelope to take to school with $25 or $50, whatever the amount might be. But I truly believe that somebody was looking out for me at school to get me through that period in my life.”

That somebody, according to Baratta, was God. And when Baratta decided to give back to Joliet Catholic Academy in the form of the Baratta Foundation, at first, he wanted to remain anonymous. “Especially at the start, I didn’t want it to be something where it might be taken as, “Look at me,” the humble Baratta said. “But after sitting down with my family and talking it over, we decided if it is something that helps promote the school and helps someone else to give, we would be all for it. “I feel that strongly about Catholic education, about what Joliet Catholic means, about giving back to your fellow man. I know how much of a difference

that school has made in my life, and I know how much of a difference that school will make in the lives of so many that have gone there after me.”A graduate of North Central College, Baratta considers himself to be unbelievably fortunate. The president of Genesis Packaging & Design, he sold the company to R.R. Donnelly in September. While business had been brisk for his company, which does creative design and packaging production for displays and signage in the food and beverage industry, the recession was a major source of adversity until R.R. Donnelly’s offer to buy.

“There was a time in 2008, 2009 that was very difficult for the industry and we saw companies going out of business left and right,” Baratta said. “My wife and I prayed over it and we decided that, when we could afford it again, we were going to find a way to give back. And for me, that meant JCA. You reach a point in your life when you realize that it’s time. We knew it was the right time to do this.” Baratta and his wife Belinda are strong proponents of Catholic education. Their son Nathan, 18, is a senior football player at Wheaton St. Francis and their 15-year old daughter, Megan, is a freshman.

“It’s interesting because my wife attended public schools growing up in Romeoville,” Baratta said. “When we first discussed where to send our kids to school, she wasn’t totally sure about it. But after a short period of time of having them in the Catholic grade schools, right away she saw the benefits. Like in seventh grade, she was the classroom mother. She really bought into it. It can be something that, if you don’t grow up experiencing it, you might not understand how special it can be.”Special. Baratta used that same word to describe his experiences at Joliet Catholic. “I just remember the camaraderie between the students,” he said. “It’s a special, special place. It didn’t matter if you were a football player or someone who was more into books or the arts, everybody got along and everybody supported each other. You were Hilltoppers. And the teachers were tremendous.”

Thankfully, Baratta allowed his story to be told. It’s a story of one man from one family continuing the chain that simple acts of kindness can build. It’s not only a Catholic story – it’s a Joliet Catholic story. The Baratta Foundation is an endowed scholarship fund of $40,000, with additional funds to be provided. It will award annual scholarships, helping to benefit future Hillmen and Angels.

Special Events & Fundraisers

JCA Spirit Raffle September 1, 2011 – October 12, 2011A HUGE thank you to all who continue to support our annual Spirit Raffle. The first place prize of $5,000 went to JCA science teacher Greg Vogen, 2nd prize of $2,500 to Ray Barton (’49), 3rd prize of $1,500 asked to remain anony-mous, and 4th prize of $500 to Geri Russ. The top five student sellers were Melissa Bruggeman, Amy Koncar, Laurel Stofan, Drew Voss and Nolan Hucek, respectively. The Spirit Raffle provides 25% of the $1 million gap we have for the cost to educate a student and the tuition we charge.

Food Drive October 2011In its sixth year, JCA’s annual fall food drive donated over 7,500 pounds to the local church pantries of St. Patrick’s, St. Bernard’s and St. John the Baptist. The food drive was held during October, with students bringing donations to their homerooms. The senior class ended up with the most pounds and received a dress-down day as a prize. Members of the Varsity Club, including players from the Hilltoppers’ football team, helped deliver the food under the supervision of teachers Celeste Mackey and Suzi Arnett.

Jubilaté - “JCA’s March Madness” March 10, 2012The JCA family celebrated another successful fundraising event at its 27th Annual Jubilaté held on March 10, 2012 at Bolingbrook Golf Club, under the guidance of Chris Voss. “March Madness at JCA” involved teamwork and dedica-tion provided by a committee of parent volunteers. Success was achieved by the generosity of our guests, sponsors and donors for whose “gifts” we are forever grateful!

The heart of the evening consisted of the Adler Family receiving the Joliet Catholic Academy Recognition Award for their selfless contributions, motivated by their faith, to our school. Jubilaté 2012 realized over $164,000 which was directed to our operating costs that directly impact our Angels and Hillmen. The quote from Mike Krzyzewski (Duke University) summarizes our gratitude, “Making shots counts, but not as much as the people who make them.”

JCA 5K RUN and WALK May 20, 2012The 2nd annual JCA 5K Run and Walk was a huge success! Thank you to all who came, ran, walked, volunteered and in any way supported this amazing event. JCA is so very thankful for all of your support. As last year, all pro-ceeds benefit the Helping Hands Tuition Assistance fund, which is designed to help current JCA families in need.

Jubilaté Recognition Award Established in 2004, the Jubilaté Recognition Award is presented annually to a distinguished group of individuals whose outstanding generosity demonstrates a commitment to the JCA tradition of yesterday and the vision of tomorrow. This honor is intended to showcase persons for their contribution of time, dedication and talents to make a meaningful difference at Joliet Catholic Academy.

The family of Joe and Jodie Adler were the worthy recipients of the 2012 Jubilaté Recognition Award. Joe and Jodie Adler have forged a strong foundation for their family built upon their Catholic faith and their selfless examples of do what you can to make the world a better place!

Joe Adler graduated from Joliet Catholic High School in 1948 and the University of Notre Dame. Jodie Biddle graduated from St. Francis Academy in 1949 and St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame. The relationship between JCHS, SFA and now Joliet Catholic Academy brought Joe and Jodie together. They have been married for 59 years, raised six children and dote on their 22 grandchildren. They truly are a family of Hilltoppers and Angels.

“Our idea of education went beyond the courses. You can get the educational courses anywhere. We were looking outside of the class work, to those less fortunate in the Joliet area – the community service that we felt would set JCA apart,” said Joe Adler.

Joe and Jodie Adler sent six children – Daniel (’72), Teddy (’73), Jackie (’75), Chris (’76), Michael (’78) and Jay (’82) through St. Patrick’s Grade School, JCHS and SFA. Many of their grandchildren and extended family have attended JCA. They also have supported JCA through gifts to the Jack Adler Scholarship.

“Wherever Mom and Dad are or have been, they live and preach justice and peace,” said Dan Adler, their eldest son. “Their love of family and the support they have given their children are the best examples. They have given their children fine educations and continue to provide us with examples of good living.”

“We never felt like we were giving a lot, but the more we gave, the more we gained in return,” Joe Adler said. “That has been a theme of our lives together, all the way from the Hill and the Academy to JCA.”
