Williston has held its Rockinʼ Ribfest on July 4 as part of the Williston Blast! celebration since 2009. This past year, there were 18 teams, each cooking 150 pounds of ribs. Susan McDonnell, events manager for the Williston Chamber of Commerce, said the ribfest is a big draw thatʼs grown in popularity. In 2013, it was reported ribbers cooked about 1,600 pounds of ribs. Ribfests go over big in the big towns. Bismarck has its Rip Roarinʼ Ribfest each June, and Fargo has its Happy Harryʼs Ribfest. But the events are just as popular in the small towns. Thereʼs the annual firemenʼs ribfest in Edinburg, Ribfest! in Rutland and additional ribfests that have been held in Walhalla, Grafton, Carrington and other small communities. One of the most popular small-town ribfests is the Best of the West Ribfest in Watford City each August, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce for about the past 10 years. Jessie Veeder Scofield, who has been involved in Watford Cityʼs ribfest planning, said past space constraints have limited the num- ber of competitors to 20, but there is hope of expanding in the future. Competitors this year each cooked up 175 pounds and many did more to keep up with the diner demand. “We had been running out of ribs in previous years,” Scofield said. The oil boom and town growth have meant new companies and new teams getting involved, especially more residents with Southern roots who take their barbecuing seriously. Itʼs not the prize money that drives the competition, though. In the past few years, winning teams have donated prizes back to the chamber to support future ribfests. “They are in it to be involved with the community, to get out and do something fun in the summer. Itʼs more like a friendly competi- tion for the businesses,” Scofield said. “Definitely, they want to win. But itʼs not about the money. Itʼs definitely about bragging rights.” Larry Barstad of Velva applies sauce to ribs at the Lilʼ Redneck Ribfest in Velva July 12. Jill Schramm/MDN Force members from Minot, Kevin Metcalf, originally of Illinois, and Jim Godfrey, formerly of Boston. Bridges, a North Carolina native, said they stick with a similar recipe that came out of Texas for their ribs. “It’s really satisfying when somebody tells you how good it is. That’s the cher- ry on top,” Bridges said. The Q Crew hires out for private events, cooking whole hogs for birthday parties and as many as 400 ribs for a sin- gle event. In contrast, many teams in ribfest competitions are backyard hobby- ists who enter the contests to promote the hometown. “Just wanted to support the local community. It’s p.r. for Velva,” said Dave Shock of the Gooseneck Implement team of Velva. Of course, they knew they had a pretty hot product with the recipe of co-worker Dean Martin. “He made us ribs at work, Shock said. “They were pretty darn good.” The judges thought so, too. The team’s ribs took first place. Watching over their yellow and green smoker were the Bison Buddies, a Velva team made up of North Dakota State University Bison fans Johnny Johnson and Randy Hauck of Velva and Jerry Schweitzer of Minot. Johnson described the team as in the contest to support Velva – and also possibly in over their heads next to some of the pro barbecuers in the competition. He and his team members smoke deer sausage every year so figured this would- n’t be so hard, Johnson said. They tested out some rib recipes ahead of time. “The first one was mediocre,” Johnson said, noting that they perfected a recipe only the week before the contest. He said they planned to follow the recipe and “cross our fingers they turn out good. ... If they turn out anything like last week, the public will like them.” The Hog-er-up team of Matthias Hanson from Surrey and his father, Clint, from Des Lacs came to the Lil’ Redneck Ribfest to meet up with neigh- bors and friends and enjoy the weekend. Matthias Hanson said it’s the attraction of a small-town event that prompted to them participate. “We are winging it,” he said, noting the borrowed grill and small smoker. “We just thought we would give it a whirl.” Ribfest competitors are a dedicated bunch, showing up for the Velva event shortly after 6 a.m. to get the cooking started. They watched over smokers and applied barbecue rubs during the count- down to serving judges at 4 p.m. and the public at 5 p.m. The incentive was prizes ranging from $100 to $500 for ribs that carried the best presentation, taste and tenderness. cook up 50 pounds of ribs, the amountassigned to each competitor. Nearby, theteam sponsored by Farmers Union Oil inVelva had nine people working. GregSchmaltz of Scheresky Ag in Max andPaul Huesers of Max were joined by theScheresky Ag’s young, energetic, agricul-tural workers from South Africa.

Schmaltz and Huesers made separaterecipes and planned to decide later whichto give the judges. Schmaltz said heobtained his special barbecue sauce froma supplier in Rochester, Minn., by havinga friend from Wisconsin pick it up anddeliver it to another friend in Sioux Falls,S.D., who brought it to Velva just in time. The staff at Farmers Union Oil con-

verted a cooler into a large smoker for theteam.Wayne Bauer and son, Rick, of Velva

built their Monster Q team’s smokerabout three weeks before the Velvaribfest, where it had its debut. Althoughit was their first time in a ribfest, theywere one of the most experienced teamsin the Velva event. They said they’llsometimes cook a whole pig or 70pounds of ribs just for fun and invitefriends and neighbors.

Vedaa and co-organizer Cory Schmaltz, general manager at Farmers Union Oil,cooked up the idea to host a ribfest in Velva

after taking in similar events in other com-munities. Although not a competitor,Vedaa prepared additional ribs to haveextra on hand for the crowd.

It wouldn’t be a ribfest without plentyof other activities, and Velva’s MidsummerNight’s Jam had plenty to offer. It featureda pedal tractor pull, Model T assembly raceby the Bismarck Pioneer Auto Club, ArmyNational Guard display, classic and clunk-er car show, karaoke, street vendors andlate-night concert.

Minot has been known as the“Magic City” since the early dayswhen the route of the railroad ledto Minot magically rising from theplains and forever changing thelandscape.Today Minoters are reminded of

that old magic when they seeimpressive new developmentsbeing constructed where farmlandexisted a few months previously.Southgate Crossing on the city’ssouthwest edge is a vivid exampleof remarkable transformation fromvacant prairie to a thriving busi-ness and residential area added tothe city.Roers Construction of Fargo met

a need in Minot with an impressive50-acre development situated alongincreasingly busy Sixteenth StreetSouthwest. Larry Nygard, Roersvice-president, has been over-see-ing the ambitious building projecton the edge of the booming Bakkenoil field of western North Dakota.“When we started looking at the

Bakken in 2009, what we likedabout Minot is that it had animpact from the oil. It had thatgoing for it, but also had the otheraspects of a thriving community,”said Nygard. “It has regional shop-ping, good health care and drawsfrom all over the area. The collegemakes it good. The railroad createsa lot of activity and the agriculture,of course, is great. Even without theBakken we thought Minot was agood place to be.”Businesses thought so, too.

Southgate Crossing attracted CashWise Foods, Gordman’sDepartment Store, Shoe Carnivaland Petco among others. All werenew businesses in Minot. Alongthe frontage road where SouthgateCrossing’s strip mall is located sev-eral other businesses have sprungup ranging from a bank to restau-rants.“Obviously proximity to Dakota

place to build,” said Nygard. “It had goodstreet infrastructure and traffic flow. Minotis benefiting like the rest of the Bakken, business and residential. The project takesadvantage of both of those opportunities.”To support the new development and

help address a need for more housing ingrowing Minot, Roers constructed severallarge apartment buildings immediatelywest of Southgate’s business mall.According to Nygard, about 370 new apart-ment units were built.“New businesses follow the rooftops,”

explained Nygard. “When the oil patchstarted, sleeping included camper and

tents and everything else. The need wasmet somewhat by hotels and motels andthen began a transition into apartmentsand then single-family housing. The retail-ers watch how many people have movedto town. That’s when it shows up on theradar of retailers and they start landing inyour community.”The retailers at Southgate today had no

connection to Minot as recently as 2009.They were watching, waiting for develop-ment trends to trigger action. New busi-nesses have found Southgate to be a hitwith customers and expect business onlyto get better in the days ahead.“The development was designed to

meet a specific need,” said Nygard. “Wewatch the market. Minot’s got a goodfuture and we are certainly looking for-

ward to doing more projects in the city.”Among the projects slated to get under

way at Southgate yet in 2014 is a huge one– the building of a Hilton Garden Inn,which will include a major conferencecenter. Another project is the constructionof a climate controlled self-storage andoffice rental center that will be locatedwest of the Baymont Inn.Nygard described Minot as going

through “growing pains” in regard todevelopment, but has seen rapid growthspurts in other communities result in sim-ilar obstacles to be overcome.“Dickinson, Williston, Watford City,

Killdeer, Glendive, Sidney. To a letter allthose communities deal with the sameissues. Everybody has an adjustment peri-od. How could things not be maxed out?”

said Nygard.Roers made several efforts to expedite

construction at Southgate Crossing, including funding a traffic light intersec-tion on Sixteenth Street at the northeastcorner of the complex and creating a newexit and entrance for residents of nearbyGreen Acres. Nygard described the GreenAcres improvement as a “side benefit” tothe city.As for working and building in Minot,

Nygard said all went surprisingly smooth.“We’re very happy about it. I wish they

all went like that. We were blessed withgood timing, good location and a city staffthat really wanted to see it happen. Theyknew the need,” said Nygard. “It was theright use for the right location and every-body got on board and supported it.”

By ANDREA JOHNSONStaff Writer

[email protected] of the booming Bakken can be

seen everywhere you look these days. When it comes to schools, that growth

is most evident in the portable classrooms

that are scattered around brick and mortarbuildings, intended to educate the over-flow population of schools that are nowbursting at the seams. That growth was a problem that wasn’t

anticipated just a few short years ago, when school administrators were warningthat the state faced dwindling school

enrollment numbers. When the newWashington Elementary in Minot, aremodeled medical clinic, was opened atthe end of 2007, there were several emptyclassrooms. Now that school has nineportable classrooms located outside itsdoors and a 10th classroom rented by theschool district in an adjoining school

building.Soon, though, some of those portable

classrooms will be replaced with gleamingnew elementary, middle and high schools, which will be a hit with students andteachers alike.

Schools booming like BakkenAndrea Johnson/MDN

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in May for the addition and renovation project for South Prairie School, south of Minot.

In Minot, middle school students nowattend the brand new Erik RamstadMiddle School in northwest Minot, com-pleted last December. It replaced the oldschool that was destroyed in the SourisRiver flood of 2011. Elementary studentsattend school in the newly remodeled andexpanded Longfellow Elementary and atLewis and Clark Elementary, which wasalso expanded to provide room for thegrowing population on the north side.Voters approved a $39.5 million bond

issue in April that will pay for moreschool construction. Two new elementaryschool additions – one at EdisonElementary and the other at PerkettElementary – are scheduled to be com-

pleted in time for the 2015-2016 schoolyear and an entirely new elementaryschool is to be built in southeast Minotwhich will open in 2016.Superintendent Mark Vollmer said the

growth is exciting.Growth is also continuing in other

schools around the Minot area. The Minot Catholic Schools just com-

pleted a classroom addition that providedmore space for both its elementary andhigh school students. At South Prairie, 10 miles south of

Minot, voters said “yes” to a $12 millionbond issue that is paying for constructionof a new high school addition.Superintendent Wayne Stanley said

reaction to the new high school has beenhighly positive. The community of SouthPrairie has a strong identity and both stu-dents and parents like the idea of having

their own high school and no longer pay-ing tuition for high school students to beeducated in neighboring school districts. At the groundbreaking ceremony in

May, students Jackson Lindbo and LileeFriesen said they were looking forward toattending high school at South Prairiewith all of their friends. Lilee, who livesfarther away than the other students, waslooking forward to having a shorter busride to school. No other K-8 school district in the state

has added a new high school since the1920s, so South Prairie is breaking newground in that way as well. When the new high school at South

Prairie opens in 2015-2016, it shouldhave about 50 students to start out with.More students will likely attend theschool in coming years.South Prairie isn’t the only K-8 school

adding a new high school.Nedrose voters approved an $18 mil-

lion bond issue earlier this year and arebuilding a new middle and high schoolthat will be located about a mile and ahalf from the current elementary school.Superintendent Charles Miller said it

is a positive because, like South Prairie, itwill allow Nedrose to have its own iden-tity. Older kids who are already estab-lished in other schools may not want toreturn, but Miller said younger studentswill. The new high school will be able to

accommodate up to 360 children.Miller said the new school will be one

of the largest Class B schools in the area, smaller only than Des Lacs-Burlington.Principals, teachers and students alike

seem to agree that all the new growth andconstruction is a real “hit.”

A group of ceremonial participants usegolden shovels to“break ground”during the May groundbreakingceremony for theaddition and renovation project at SouthPrairie School, 10miles south of Minot.Andrea Johnson/MDN
