Theater 11.

AddressThurgauerstrasse 78050 ZurichSwitzerlandhttp://www.theater11.ch

. 'A case of cannibalism in architecture' is what EM2N architectDaniel Niggli calls his conversion of the Stadthof 11 inZurich-Oerlikon into a theatre for musicals. The new buildingincorporated everything of the old theatre it could use, thoughthat was little more than the stage house and the cellar, and gaveit state-of-the-art technology. Faced with the large buildings ofits surroundings and the open space in between, the theatreresponds without copying their scale. Its highest corner jutsforward, opening up at the base like a shark's jaws. From thiscorner, the dark casing of perforated sheet metal enveloping boththe outer walls and the roof, angles downward until, by the timeit gets to the back wall, it is down to the level of thesingle-family homes there. Piercing the perforated sheet-metalshell, a few large windows frame particular views into thebuilding. In the evening, light shines through the many smallopenings in between, which are visible only in outline by day.

.

Freitag Flagship Store.

AddressGeroldstrasse 17CH-8005 ZurichSwitzerlandhttp://www.freitag.ch

. Freitag started to make tarp-bags in 1993, inspired from a viewonto the transit-bridge. In 2006 they decided to sellbags-made-from-tarps in a shop-made-from-containers.Completely built from 17 rusty, recycled freight-containers,selected in person in Hamburg and brought to Zurich by rail.Stacked low enough not to violate the city’s restriction onhigh-rise, high enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine. Theway the elements are stacked is authentic, and only connectingelements from the shipping industry are used. This also meansthat dismantling the tower and leaving the site in its originalstate will be a straightforward process. Freitag’s decision tolocate its flagship store here enriches the area, adding a new, high profile building which is used by members of the publicduring the day. The view from the roof of the Freitag shop ontothe transit-bridge is the same view that started the wholeshebang in 1993. For some it’s just noisy. For others it’s a sourceof inspiration.

Aussersihl Community Centre.

AddressHohlstrasse 678004 ZurichSwitzerland

. This project was won in competition in 1999. The site is a historicmemorial park, on the western side of the city centre - asensitive location. The architects decided to break withconvention for a community centre, and build vertically, ratherthan horizontally. The initial proposal was for a six-storey,angular tower nestling by some trees on the eastern side of thesite. After completing the design, the budget was slashed, andthe design team were sent back to the drawing board. Therevised scheme is still in the form of a tower, but only fourstoreys, including a basement and kidney-shaped in plan. Thestructure is formed of lime brick walls and concrete floor slabs. Itis clad in timber boards, stained dark green, to help the buildingblend in with its surroundings. By contrast, the interiors arepainted in many different and bright colours. The ground floorcontains a café, which is popular with the locals out enjoying thepark.

Branco Weiss Information ScienceLaboratory

.AddressWolfgang-Pauli-Strasse 278093 ZurichSwitzerlandhttp://www.society-in-science.ethz.ch/

. Within ETH Zurich this new building is simply called the 'HIT', butits full name is the 'Branco Weiss Information Science Laboratory',named after ETH Zurich alumnus Branco Weiss who supported thebuilding financially. The building, with its panoramic view of theentire city, will certainly be filled with a lot of electronics by theusers, and yet it is not a high-tech building, as a symbol of theinformation highway. The façade is a contributor to thebuilding's climatic properties; sensors respond to the weatherand the height of the sun. The depths of the balconies differdepending on their compass direction, so they also act assunshades. Openings of various sizes from the small spatial units, the entrance area and the two-story seminar rooms situatedalong the outer walls lend the façade its own rhythm. //text fromarchitects' website

MFO-Park.

AddressSophie-Taeuber-Strasse 68050 ZurichSwitzerland

. The MFO-Park is a public square/public park located in the northof Zurich. Its steel construction has exactly the same size as theformer industrial building situated in the place. The steelstructure was meant to get overgrown by various plants. In thepast years, the initially clean steel structure became more andmore covered by leaves. Within the process of getting overgrownit became more and more popular to the inhabitants of thequarter. The project is part of the transformation of Zurich-Nord,forming an industrial area into an urban quarter. It shows oneway of how industrial areas can be transformed without losing thecharacteristics totally.

La Galerie Du Vin.

AddressFeldstrasse 628004 ZurichSwitzerland

. "La Galerie Du Vin" is both a sales as well as a wine tasting andseminar venue and aims to appeal to regular customers andpassers-by alike. The spatial layout and staging by OOS reflect thestore's values and traditions and let the wine bottles speak forthemselves. The intent of the interior design is to present animage of a landscape consisting of wine cases in which thehigh-quality wines are presented together with their cases as in amuseum gallery. Some 1,500 unbranded wine cases from theBordeaux region cover the entire room up to the ceiling, creatinga cave-like environment. The wooden cases are simultaneously anarchitectural element and a part of the furniture. Arranged in agrid pattern they serve as a platform for about 570 wines, books, seating areas and illuminated table display cabinets. The mostlyFrench wines are spatially divided into various geographicalregions and groupings, which conceal specific histories, culturesand landscapes.
