• Fujiwara clan were in charge

• They controlled all the important government offices

• The Emperor even married Fujiwara women

• The Emperor named Minamoto Yorimoto as SHOGUN.

• He moved the city to Kamukura

• This began the start of the Shogun era

• Emperor were only allowed religious duties and Shoguns and samurais ruled Japan

KAMUKURA 1192-1333

The Kamukura Shogunate lasted nearly 150 years

New laws outlined the rights of the Samurai and Buddhism gathered strength

Minamoto no Yorimoto was the head Shogun

During this time there were three clans fighting for power

FUJIWARAMINAMOTO

TAIRA

In 1068 the Emperor reduced the power the FUJIWARA clan had by electing members of the rival MINAMOTO

clan to important government offices

This emperor, Go- Sanjo was also the first emperor in more then 200 years whose mother was not from the

Fujiwara clan

He also married members of the Fujiwara so his heirs were loyal to MINAMOTO rather than FUJIWARA

This lead to the eventual rise of the MINAMOTO clan

• The Emperor Go-Daigo resisted the military government

• He got the support from Ashikaga samurai and forced the Kamukura out

• But then the Ashikaga kicked out the Emperor

• The Ashikaga clan then ruled Japan for the next 237 years !

• The Ashikaga clan could not control the other daiymo’s though and this resulted in a lot of fighting between provinces
