MIKE 3 is a professional engineering software package for 3D free-surface flows. It is applicable to simulations of flows, cohesive sediments, water quality and ecology in rivers, lakes, estuaries, bays, coastal areas and seas. MIKE 3 forms a unique professional software tool for consultancy services related to design, operation and maintenance tasks within the aquatic environment. MIKE 3 is the result of 20 years of continuous development and is tuned through the experience gained from hundreds of applications worldwide.

Typical Application Areas

3D Modelling of Coastal Waters and Seas

Simulation EnginesMIKE 3 has the following simulationengines:

Single Grid - the classic rectilinear model easy to set up, easy I/O exchange, straight forward navigation in model and presentationMultiple Grids - dynamically nested rectilinear model with the ability to tailor grid resolution in areas ofinterest

Flexible Mesh - maximum flexibility for tailoring grid resolution within the model.

For the Single Grid and Multiple Grids versions, the fully time-dependent non-linear equations of continuity and conservation of momentum in three dimensions are solved by finite difference techniques with the variables defined on a rectangular staggered grid in x, y andz-space.

Two different hydrodynamic engines are included. A nonhydrostatic version, which applies an artificial compressibility, and a hydrostatic version.

The Flexible Mesh (FM) version uses a cell-centered, finite volume method for discretization of the flow and transport equations. In the horizontal plane (Cartesian or spherical coordinates), an unstructured grid consisting of triangles is used. In the vertical domain, a structured, layered discretization is used with dynamic surface adaptive grids.
