Colonization: Europeans Bring Change

• They were eager for access to silks, spices, and precious metals in Southeast Asia.

• Their population increase, demanded for more products to be produced.

• By the late 1800’s Europeans colonized all of Southeast Asia except Thailand.

• Drastically changed the regions physical and human geography.

• Affected relations among various indigenous groups.

Myanmar

•Formerly known as Burma•British combined into a single political

unit•Since independence various ethnic groups

have rebelled against the government.•Repressive government

Thailand•Not colonized by the British

•Exports changed from agricultural goods to industrial products

•Improved infrastructure because of funding through tourism

Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia•Different ethnically

•Cultures were influenced by India which made them Buddhist

•Both Cambodia and Laos have seen economic growth over the last decade

• Indonesia is united through a strong government

• The Philippines is now recovering from economic recession

trading post and became independent in 1965

•Their thriving economy is due to many high school workers and high tech industries

•Main port because of their location relative to South Asian countries

Malaysia and Brunei

•Strong economies that are not based on agriculture

•Large reserves of oil and natural gas

•Money goes toward the modernization of the countries

•Malaysia supports a variety of many economic activities

Papua New Guinea • Home to 700 ethnic groups

• Split between a traditional and modern world

• Many people are engaged in agriculture

• Communication is poor do to the lack of infrastructure

• However there are many modern products and machines like canned food and the latest mining machines
