Microstrain WSDA Data Aggregator with Sensor Cloud Commissioning Guide 1) Open PWR terminals BAT+ (Battery), SLR+ (Solar Panel) and AG+ (WSDA), MOD+ (Cell Modem), CLK+(timer)

Orange disconnect terminals. 2) Connect earth ground wire from tripod or ground rod to enclosure earth ground terminal. Ensure tripod is tied to

earth grounding rod. 3) Connect battery (+) white wire to BAT(+), Connect battery (-) Black wire to BAT(-) . 4) Connect solar panel to the Solar panel terminals SLR(+ / SLR(-). Then close terminal BAT(+). This will connect the

12VDC battery to the solar regulator system terminals. Then close terminal SLR(+) note the Charging LED on solar regulator should come on if in sunlight. Make sure you connect the battery connection and close the battery switch first.

5) Close terminal CLK+ which will provide external power to the timer. Turn on the manual timer overide switch (Auto

I) close terminal AG+ and the WSDA will power on ( make sure WSDA toggle switch is turned on) 6) Connect Ethernet cable to WSDA using Ethernet switch, Log into WSDA web page using DHCP (determine IP

address using Live connect) Note the user can also log into the WSDA web page and launch the network using the cell modem static IP address.

7) In Node commander launch the WSDA network 8) Close terminal Mod+ (cell modem) and the Raven X modem will power on. 9) Log into the Sensor Cloud web page and new data should be automatically be displayed. 10) Program the timer to turn the WSDA and modem on and off to conserve power. An example is turning the modem on for 1 hour every 6 hours. Change timer mode to Auto and Run modes

System Overview The Mandy Lake Wireless sensor network array consists of the Microstrain ENV-Link Mini nodes, WSDA wireless base station with an Airlink Raven X cellular modem. The system is solar powered using a 50 watt solar panel and 120 Ahr. AGM solar battery. For power management the WSDA Data Aggregator and cellular modem is powered on and off on a schedule using a digital timer. As an example the timer turns on the modem and WSDA for 1 hour every 8 hours for a total of 3 hours per day. When the system is energized the WSDA polls and downloads data from the remote nodes and then sends the data to the sensor Cloud using the HSPA cellular modem.

Node Programming Using Microstrain’s Node Commander Software Upon connecting the WSDA mXRS Wireless Base Station to the computer via USB drivers will be automatically installed. If it has not already been done, download Microstrain’s Node Commander software from their website (http://www.microstrain.com/wireless/software). This software is used to interface with the nodes and is required to configure, communicate with, and download data from the nodes. Start Node Commander. This window will appear.

In the left-hand window the base station should appear. Right click on the base station and scroll over “Add Nodes”. Select “Node Discovery”.






When connecting via the cellular modem through the internet use Microstrain Live connect software and manual input the modem Static IP address:






The “Node Discovery” window will appear. Cycle the power on all the nodes. They should each appear beneath the base station. When they have all appeared click “Stop” to end the “Node Discovery”. If the nodes discovered are new to this platform their information will need to be downloaded. Right click each node and download its information. Details will appear beneath each node in a drop-down menu. Note: If the nodes are left alone a period of time they will enter a low-power cycle and will not respond to commands. To wake up the node, right click on it and select “Stop Node”. The node will then wake up and will be available to work with again.






Right click on each node and select “Configure” and then “Configure Node”. The node only has to be manually programmed only once before synchronized sampling is enabled.

The nodes have already been configured; however, it may be necessary to do it again in the future. Important points are as follows: Channel’s 1, 2, and 3 must be selected and set to Type “Other”. The slope for the Decagon EC5 soil moisture sensor is Slope 0.116 offset -48.1 Temperature (in the desired units) and %RH must be selected (not Channel 4) for the T/RH probe to work correctly. To transmit data while logging, the “Log and Transmit” selection must be made, however this will use additional battery power and will decrease the life of the batteries. When all of the nodes are selected for Synchronized sampling the following menu will appear

Highlight all of the nodes in the list then select configure nodes

Apply the network configuration and start the network






Monitor Mode Screen Will Appear (monitor network to verify network performance and RSSI)






Note: All nodes should be on the same frequency. This can be selected by right clicking the node and selecting “Frequency” then choosing one. This frequency should be one not subject to interference in the area.






To manually download data from the nodes select “Sampling” then “Datalogging” and “Download”. A download of the node will occur.

Then a dialog box will appear including any number of trigger files. These trigger files each correspond to a single logging cycle. When a node is configured and starts logging, it will start a new logging cycle and trigger file. It will be necessary to determine which trigger file is the desired one. By deleting old files whenever changes are made to the logger or files are downloaded one can keep only one file on the logger making it much less confusing as well as increasing its storage space.






This box is used to select as save a file to a new location.

In the Configuration Menu ensure WSDA Beacon is enabled and verify that the WSDA channel must be the same as the ENVLink Mini node channel






Model 884: Clock / Timer Relay Module

The module is built around a solid state battery powered clock timer. External 12VDC power is required to operate the coil of the integrated relay. The clock will borrow power from the 12V supply.

The relay is wired as a normally open (off) switch. It will close or open at programmed times if the left slider switch on the clock face is in the “Auto” position. Moving the left slider to “I” forces the relay to close regardless of event times programmed into the clock. Moving to “O” will force the relay to open. Returning the switch to “Auto” does not change the relay’s status but will allow it to respond to programmed change of state events again when they do come around.

The module’s internal terminals have attached:

+12V- red Ground - black Relay In - green Relay Out - orange

The right slider selects time setting when at the clock face position, programming at the circled P position and normal operation at the “Run” position. For time setting, move the slider to the clock face symbol then set h-hour, m-minute and 1-7 day of week. For timer events, odd numbers 1-15 are “On” events; even 2-16 are “Off” events. Set hour, minute and day of week for each and the circled P to set the program. Setting day of week to nothing will deactivate the event.
