Campus Announcements (/agenda/feed/Agenda: Campus Announcements/)
Sat, August 29, 2015 @ 07:30 pm - 08:00 pm
Howard Performing Arts Center
You are invited to attend a free concert by Jaime Jorge (see one of the posters attached) at HowardPerforming Arts Center Saturday, August 29, 2015 at 7:30pm. A freewill offering will be taken during theconcert to raise funds for building a church for one of the congregations where seminary students held
evangelistic meetings in March of 2014. It is a very vibrant congregation that has had several baptism buthave very limited financial resources.
It is called the Valero Church, and the facilities barely had walls. It was mostly wired together with sheets andplywood as a very improvised shelter for the people. Several seminary students have decided to do morethan simply visiting and doing evangelism. This concert is one of several projects that they have decided toimplement in order to raise $25,000 dollars, which it will take to build this congregation a representative houseof worship.
Jaime Jorge! His forceful, expressive mastery of the violin has delighted audiences around the globe. Jaime hasdedicated his talents to sharing the love of God through sacred and classical concerts and special appearances the worldover.
From High School auditoriums to magnificent cathedrals, from simple church programs to Carnegie Hall, Jaime’s musiccan inspire, uplift, and bring peace. For over two decades, through 15 albums and more than 2,500 concerts in North andSouth America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, Jaime’s music has touched the lives of millions. It can touch yours too.

New Principal at RMESEvelyn Savory tackles new school year
Campus News (/agenda/feed/Agenda: Campus News/) | Posted on August 26, 2015
By: Becky St. Clair
Evelyn Savory was raised in a small mining town in Guyana by Anglican and Catholic parents. The town
was too small to have regular church services, but their home was strictly Catholic.
✏
The principal of the town’s school was a Seventh-day Adventist. “He was my mentor,” says Savory. “He
really lived his faith and ran our little public school like an Adventist school. Several students were
baptized because of his influence—including me. That was the beginning of my journey.”
Savory was introduced to Adventist education when students from Caribbean Union College (CUC), now
University of the Southern Caribbean, came home to Guyana and raved about their school. Later, while
attending her first Bible camp, the pastor spoke about CUC and the benefits of Adventist education
and captured Savory's imagination. She quit her job, became a literature evangelist, and at the
beginning of the semester enrolled at CUC. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary
education and served as a missionary. After immigrating to the United States, She earned a master’s
degree in education administration and curriculum & instruction from Atlantic Union College while
teaching full-time.
As a new Seventh-day Adventist Savory pledged to go wherever the Lord calls. She has served for 33
years as teacher and/or principal of a number of Seventh-day Adventist schools in the Caribbean and
the United States. Savory is passionate about service and embraces her work with commitment to
making a difference in the lives she touches.
Obeying the call to further hone her skills, Savory enrolled in the PhD program in leadership at Andrews
University. “I chose the leadership program at Andrews because it is job-embedded so it caters to the
working person,” she says.
While at Andrews, Savory served in the School of Education as internship coordinator and teacher at
the University Center for Reading, Learning & Assessment. She also worked as a substitute teacher
with Berrien RESA, Andrews Academy and Ruth Murdoch Elementary School (RMES). She also found
time for activities such as serving on the Lake Union Accreditation team and making presentations for
webinars with the Department of Leadership team in the School of Education.
Savory’s leadership philosophy is encapsulated in the acronym OPEN. Ownership: you’re vested.
Partnership: we’re doing this together. Empower: build capacity, provide resources and support.
Nurture: my responsibility as a leader. Given her experience as an administrator, Savory knows about
the challenges facing Christian education and parents who struggle to keep their children in our
system.
Savory plans to promote RMES’s unique education philosophy which she has dubbed “STEAMS,” an
extension of what many recognize as STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, but with Arts
and Spirituality added. She also wants to revitalize RMES as the laboratory school for Andrews
University, and to foster continuous quality improvement with an emphasis on best practices for
teacher and student development.
“I’ve always told God I am open to Him and His plans for me,” she says. “Today, I am just as open to Him
using me, in concert with our teachers and staff, to keep RMES moving on the trajectory of excellence
and a commitment to educate our children for here and eternity.”

Andrews University’s Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry invite you to attend the first of the 2015
ChemSem lecture series on Thursday, August 27, at 4:30 p.m. in the Chemistry Amphitheater, located
on the first floor of Halenz Hall in the Science Complex.
The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is celebrating two anniversaries this year: The
75th anniversary of the department and the 50th anniversary of the lecture series itself.
Programming for this first occurrence of the weekly series will include a brief history of the
department and seminar, honoring first graduates and other alumni, and an announcement of this
year’s scheduled “Diamond & Gold” anniversary celebration events.
Also on the agenda is an opportunity to honor Dwain L. Ford, professor of chemistry, emeritus, by
renaming ChemSem the Dwain L. Ford Lecture Series.
This event and all following seminars during this special year of celebration will be live-streamed and
recorded. To tune in to the live stream, visit andrews.edu/cas/chemistry and click “seminar.” To watch

Berrien Springs Camera Club Community Announcements (/agenda/feed/Agenda: Community Announcements/) | Posted on
August 26, 2015
The Berrien Springs Camera Club will open its new season on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. in the
Berrien Springs Community Library at Cass and Union. The club’s season runs from September through
June each year, with programs alternating between an informative presentation about some aspect of
photography, and a competition open to members.
The September meeting will provide an opportunity for the members themselves to critique each
other’s images. Each is invited to submit up to five digital images, taken during the past year, for
projection and critique as time allows. The critiquing will be a group activity, nonjudgmental but
thinking out loud how each picture might be improved. The 2014-2015 season began this way, and
members found it enjoyable and helpful.
Anyone who plans to join the club that evening may submit their five images by following
instructions on the club’s blog site, http://berrienspringscameraclub.blogspot.com/
(http://berrienspringscameraclub.blogspot.com/)
Programs for November, January, and March will be as follows:
November 4: Member Suzanne McDonough will give instructions on matting.
January 6: Member Ted Post will share, through videos, tips on digital enhancement.
March 2: A look at what’s new in photographic equipment.
In competition months members can submit up to 10 digitally projected images and up to 10
prints for judging, following guidelines on the blog. Awards are given for the top projected images and
prints. Acceptable topics always include Nature (nothing domesticated or showing evidence of
mankind) and Open (anything), plus two special topics each month. The special topics for each
competition month this year are:
Oct. 7: Water; What Is It?
Dec. 2: Macro; 25+ Years of Age
Feb. 3: Alphabet; Motion
Apr. 6: Bridges; Mechanics and Industry
The May 4 meeting is for final judging of the year's acceptances, when 3 judges will select the
top 10 projected images and prints of the year, and the June 1 end-of-season meeting will include a
potluck meal at 6:30 and a show from the year's acceptances.
Club officers this year are:
President—Jill Kline Dodge
Treasurer—Ted Post
Vice President for Judges—Jim Lynch
Vice President for Publicity—Madeline Johnston
Vice Presidents for Digital Projection/Blog/Facebook—Suzanne Anderson and Tom McDonough
The public is welcome to attend and enjoy the competitions. Annual membership fees are $10 for
students, $25 for other individuals, or $35 per family. Refreshments are served at each meeting.
