Microscope Operation

Using the Illuminator Mirror:

Your Celestron microscope has a built-in Plano-concave illumination mirror which allows you toilluminate the specimen from the bottom. The mirror has a flat side and a concave side. Theconcave side will concentrate more light onto the specimen than the flat side. To illuminate aspecimen:

1. If it is daylight, tilt the illumination mirror (4) and reflect indirect sunlight through the bottom ofspecimen stage (3).

WARNING: Never use the mirror to focus direct sunlight through your microscope.Sunlight, if viewed directly can be very harmful and may permanently damage your eyes.

2. If viewing at night or indoors, away from sunlight, you can use a nearby desk or table lamp toreflect light onto a specimen.

To control the amount of light reflecting onto the specimen:

1. Use the concave side of the illuminator mirror to focus more light on the slide. The concaveside will concentrate more light onto your specimen but will focus a smaller beam of light, making it more sensitive to adjust.

2. If you are unable to adjust the mirrors enough to properly illuminate the specimen, you canalso tilt the stand column (7) backwards to change the position of the mirror.

Viewing a Specimen

To view a specimen:

1. Carefully place a specimen slide under the specimen holder clips (5) and center thespecimen directly over the hole in the stage (3).

Your are know ready to focus and view the specimen, but first you must take some precautionsso as not to damage the specimen slide or objective lens. Your microscope is equipped with afocus travel safety screw (6) which allows you to regulate the range of travel on the focuser. Thisassures that the objective lens will not accidentally come in contact with the specimen slide, breaking the slide or scratching the objective lens. To adjust the travel on the focusermechanism:

1. Raise the objective lens away from the specimen stage (3) by rotating the focuser knob (8)backwards.

2. Unthread the focus travel safety screw (6) about 2/3 of the way.3. Lower the objective lens over the slide until the tip of the lens is slightly above the specimen

slide. (Be careful not to touch the objective lens to the slide).4. Thread the focus travel safely screw (6) upward until it stops against the focuser mechanism.5. Rotate the knurled locking nut upward to lock the safety screw in place.6. Now, turn the focus adjustment knob (8) until the specimen comes into sharp focus.

Assembling Your Microscope

Before you can view through your Celestron microscope, the monocular head assembly must beattached to the pillar stand (3). To attach the monocular head assembly:

1. Remove the safety screw from the top of the pillar stand (3).2. Partially unthread the pillar stand locking bolt (4) located behind the focuser assembly.3. Place the monocular head assembly onto the pillar stand (3) and slide it halfway down the

stand.4. Rotate the monocular head assembly until the objective lens (9) is directly over the center of

the stage plate (7).5. Tighten the pillar stand locking bolt (4) to hold the monocular head assembly in place.6. Thread the safety screw (2) back onto the top of the pillar stand.

Your microscope is now ready to view specimens.

Microscope Operation

To view a specimen:

1. Place the round black/white stage plate (7) into the opening on the base (6).2. Carefully place a specimen slide under the specimen holder clips (8) and center the

specimen directly in the middle of the stage plate.3. Illuminate the specimen slide by using a nearby desk or table lamp to reflect light onto a

specimen. Natural light can also be used if the microscope is located near a window.

Tip: Experiment with different lighting for different specimens. When using downward lighting, thewhite side of the stage plate may wash out fine detail whereas the black side will increasecontrast but may make the specimen less bright.

Focusing:

To focus on your specimen slide, turn the focus adjustment knob (5) until the specimen comesinto focus. If there is not enough travel in the focuser mechanism to reach focus, it may benecessary to loosen the pillar stand locking bolt (4) and slightly raise or lower the entire binocularhead assembly until the image becomes sharp.

Assembling Your Microscope

Before you can view through your Celestron microscope, the eyepiece and objective lenses mustfirst be attached.

Installing the Eyepiece:

1. Remove the 10x eyepieces from its container.2. Slide the narrow end of the eyepiece barrel into the eyepiece holder at the top of the

microscope.

Installing the Objective Lenses:

1. Remove the three objective lenses from their individual containers. Unscrew the container lidsfrom the threaded portion of the objective lenses.

2. Thread the end of the 4x objective lens into one of the holes on the objective lens rotator (3). Itmay be necessary to lower the specimen stage (5) by turning the coarse focus knob (12).

3. Now turn the objective rotator to the next opening and thread each of the remaining objectivelenses into the remaining holes.

Your microscope is now ready to view specimens.

Viewing a Specimen

To view a specimen:

2. Press downward on the back portion of the spring-loaded specimen holder clips (8) to raise thefront of the clips off of the specimen stage (5).

3. Place a specimen slide under the specimen holder clips (8) and center the specimen directlyover the hole in the center of the specimen stage (5).

Your are know ready to focus and view the specimen, but first you must take some precautions soas not to damage the specimen slide or objective lens. Your microscope is equipped with a focustravel safety screw (9) which allows you to regulate the range travel on the focuser. This assuresthat the objective lenses will not accidentally come in contact with specimen slide, breaking the slideor scratching the objective lens. To adjust the travel on the focuser mechanism:

7. Raise the objective lens away from the specimen stage (5) by rotating the course focuser knob(12) backwards.

8. Unthread the focus travel safety screw (9) about two-thirds of the way.9. Turn the objective lens rotator (3) until the 40x lens is over the specimen.10. Lower the objective lens over the slide until the tip of the lens is slightly above the specimen

slide. (Be careful not to touch the objective lens to the slide).11. Thread the focus travel safely screw (9) upward until it stops against the focuser mechanism.12. Rotate the knurled locking nut upward to lock the safety screw in place.

Focusing:

Now that the specimen slide is placed directly under the objective lens, use the course focus knob(12) to focus on the specimen.

• Always start with the lowest power (4x objective lens and 10x eyepiece) and switch to higherpower by rotating the objective lens rotator (3). Be cautious not to let the objective lens touchthe specimen slide when changing to higher power.

• Use the fine focus knob (11) to change the depth of field on the specimen you are observing.• If you run out of downward travel before reaching sharp focus, you can unscrew the focus travel

safety screw (9) to allow for more downward travel. Once again be careful not to let theobjective lens touch the specimen slide.
