Getting Started

IntroductionThe MicroMax® GPS200 interrupter is a programmable, GPS current interrupter. The information in this guide is intended for authorized service personnel who plan to install and configure the interrupter for service.

GPS200 Interrupter OverviewThe GPS200 interrupter is a fully programmable, satellite synchronized interrupter capable of interrupting rectifier, bond, or any other current. Cycles can be programmed using any combination of time intervals between 0.1 seconds and 999 seconds for “Off ” and “On” cycles. The interrupter can store up to nine interruption programs for later use.

Output parameters are set to accommodate any external relay configuration. The user configurable nature of the relay controller output allows you to use either the supplied relay or your own custom relay. Additionally, the menu-driven synchronization configuration allows the interrupter to operate with almost any other brand of GPS synchronized interrupter or data logger. Based on the number of satellites seen and the quality of view, synchronization triggering accuracy is specified to within 1µs with any other MicroMax interrupter.

The next figure shows an example of the GPS200 interrupter. See Figure 3 on page 7 for an example of the connector panel.

NOTE: The “Reset” button is unavailable for use in this product release.

A unique patent pending “Interference Mode” interruption cycle (see Figure 2) allows rectifier influence studies with greatly increased productivity and ease of data interpretation. By operating in interference mode, it’s possible to determine the influence from each individual rectifier being interrupted and get the instant “Off ” and “On” pipe-to-soil potentials, all during a single visit to a test station. The influence from up to 99 rectifiers can be studied simultaneously using “Interference Mode”.

Additional features of the GPS200 interrupter include:

Supplied with a solid state relay (DC) or mercury relay (AC or DC).

NOTE: For important information about mercury relays, refer to the section entitled “Mercury Relay Customer Advisory” on page 4.

Standard current relay capacity of 100A/100V (higher capacities available). Connects to any external current relay (or multiple relays) and supplies up to 500mA. User selectable control of the interrupter output to 0V or 12V for “On” or “Off ”. (Accommodates normally open or normally closed relays.)

Synchronization can be set on the leading or falling edge of the interruption cycle.

Interruption continues automatically after power is disrupted.

Cycle range up to 999.9 seconds in 0.1 second increments.Synchronization triggering accuracy is within 1µs with any other GPS200 interrupter and collectively is less than 5µs after the PPS signal (precise positioning service signal) as provided by the GPS satellite constellation, even when only one satellite is visible.

Fully programmable between the following modes: continuous, daily, dated, and interference mode. Nine different interruption programs can be stored for later use.

AC or DC operation from a wide range of voltages.

Allows for full cathodic protection (CP) polarization when the GPS200 interrupter is not in use (rectifier “on” and no interruption after hours).

GPS200 Interrupter Installation and Configuration Guide 3

Page 10: MicroMax GPS200 Interrupter€¦ · The MicroMax® GPS200 interrupter is a programmable, GPS current interrupter. The information in this guide is intended for authorized service

Relay ControlYou can connect the GPS200 interrupter to almost any external current relay (or multiple relays) using a 12V control. Depending on the configuration, the interrupter supplies up to 500mA (12V) relay control current. As a result, numerous relays can be controlled with one interrupter. This leads to significant cost savings in areas where multiple current sources in a confined area need to be switched. The GPS200 interrupter can be set to accommodate normally open and normally closed relays. American Innovations (AI) provides several relay options for switching either AC or DC at various loads.

Mercury Relay Customer AdvisoryThis advisory is intended to notify American Innovations (AI) customers of the manufacturer’s published limitations on mercury relays.

Customers primarily purchase relays from AI for use with the MicroMax® family of current interrupters. MicroMax interrupters provide great programming flexibility to enable customers to use a wide variety of interruption cycles.

AI supplies mercury relays from a variety of respected and reliable vendors including MDI and American Electronic Components (AEC). These manufacturers publish expected relay lives of 3 to 6 million cycles depending upon the type of relay selected. AEC, the manufacturer of Durakool relays, indicates that relay life will be significantly shortened at rates exceeding 1,500 cycles per hour. MDI recommends no more than 900 cycles per hour. Depending upon the interruption cycle chosen by the customer, it is possible to exceed the manufacturer’s recommendation resulting in a likely reduction of service life.

As an example, customers who elect to use mercury relays to interrupt at 1 cycle per second will generate 3600 cycles per hour. Customers should consult the manufacturer’s documentation to select the appropriate relay for the application. Durakool information can be accessed via the Internet at the web address below:

http://www.aecsensors.com/pdf/Relays_and_Contacts_Catalog.pdf

4 Chapter 1. Getting Started

Page 11: MicroMax GPS200 Interrupter€¦ · The MicroMax® GPS200 interrupter is a programmable, GPS current interrupter. The information in this guide is intended for authorized service

In the Durakool documentation, two situations are explained that may impact the current carrying capacity of the relay: 1) cycle rate and 2) voltage values. The sizing tables indicate a methodology for determining the maximum amperage that can be carried depending upon the cycle rate. An additional de-rating table for mercury relays is provided for those instances where voltage in excess of 48 VDC is being interrupted. When selecting relays, customers should be aware of both of these de-rating tables to choose the best relay for the application.

To avoid depolarization of the CP system, the mercury relays that AI sells are of the normally closed variety. It is possible that a normally closed relay will fail at the end of its life in the open position due to a malfunction of the spring mechanism which drives the plunger/contacts into a normally closed position. If this occurs, a depolarization situation would result. AI has the following two recommendations:

Customers using mercury relays should consider periodic replacement of these relays based upon engineering estimated life via a preventive maintenance program to reduce the likelihood of an open circuit failure.

–OR–

If fast cycle operation is common, AI would recommend a solid state relay for maximum life and reliability.

Although the MicroMax interrupter is capable of being programmed for faster interruption cycles, AI recommends that customers not exceed 900 cycles per hour (or a cycle time of less than four seconds) and will not warranty devices that are utilized in this manner. AI adds a serial number to relays that it supplies to enable the tracking of the shipment date. The approximate age of the relay may be used to assist AI in return material response, failure analysis and warranty claims. AI will also consult manufacturers to help determine failure cause and advises customers that warranties may not be honored if AI or the manufacturer deems that the mercury relay is used outside of recommended parameters.

If you have questions or need additional information, please contact AI Technical Support.

Attach the red positive (+) and black negative (–) clips on the other end of the cable to a 12V DC source (such as a 12V lead acid battery) in the following manner: positive to positive and negative to negative.

AC Power Cable DC Power Cable

The GPS200 interrupter consumes approximately 120mA. Relay current consumption is additional and is typically less than 10mA for a solid state relay and could be as high as 400mA for a mechanical mercury relay.

GPS Antenna with Integral Cable: Connect the magnetic-mount, GPS antenna to the MCX connector on the interrupter. Mount the GPS antenna on a metal surface making sure the antenna has a clear view of the sky. If a metal surface is unavailable, glue a flat washer on a suitable surface and then place the GPS antenna on the flat washer.

Relay Control Output Cable: Connect the red and black banana plugs on one end of the cable in the red and black banana jacks on the interrupter making sure polarity is correct. Red indicates positive (+) and black indicates negative (–). Connect the banana plugs on the other end of the cable in the relay.

C h a p t e r 2Installation & Configuration

To Install the GPS200 InterrupterWhen completing the following procedure, refer to the figures in the section entitled “Supplied Cables” on page 6 and Figure 3 on page 7.

Complete the following steps:

1. Turn OFF all power to the rectifier.

WARNING: Make sure to follow all precautions when working with the interrupter and high voltage circuits.

2. Connect the magnetic-mount, GPS antenna to the MCX connector on the interrupter. Mount the GPS antenna on a metal surface making sure the antenna has a clear view of the sky. If a metal surface is unavailable, glue a flat washer on a suitable surface and then place the GPS antenna on the flat washer.

3. Connect the AC power cable to the interrupter. Do not connect the other end of the cable at this time.

If you are using the DC power cable instead, connect the cable to the interrupter, but do not connect the other end at this time.

4. Using the red and black banana plugs on one end of the relay control output cable, connect the red (+) banana plug in the red (+) banana jack on the interrupter. Connect the black (–) banana plug in the black (–) banana jack on the interrupter.

GPS200 Interrupter Installation and Configuration Guide 9

Page 16: MicroMax GPS200 Interrupter€¦ · The MicroMax® GPS200 interrupter is a programmable, GPS current interrupter. The information in this guide is intended for authorized service

5. Depending on the type of relay you plan to use, connect the relay to the rectifier circuit by connecting the relay current cables in the secondary AC or in either the positive (+) or negative (–) leg of the DC output.

AC relays are not polarity sensitive, however “DC Only” relays are polarity sensitive. When connecting a “DC Only” relay, make sure the current flow through the relay (+ve to –ve or from the red cable to the black cable through the relay) corresponds to the current flow direction at that particular point in the total circuit. DC relays provided by AI conduct current and do not switch if the polarity is incorrect. If this happens, reverse the polarity and then verify the relay operates correctly.

To Power Up the GPS200 InterrupterComplete the following steps:

1. Power up the GPS200 interrupter by plugging the AC power cable in an electrical outlet. The interrupter supports AC supply voltages between 80VAC and 240VAC.

If you are using the DC power cable instead, attach the clips on the cable to a 12VDC source, such as a lead acid battery. AI does not recommend that the interrupter be powered with the rectifier DC output.

After applying power to the GPS200 interrupter, the following information briefly appears in the display. The “POWER” LED on the front panel of the GPS200 also turns on and remains lit.

Working with Other Brands of InterruptersThe GPS200 interrupter has been demonstrated to work with most GPS synchronized interrupters on the market; most manufacturers use the same principle of calculating interruption synchronization.

Use the following procedure to synchronize a JR-2 interrupter with the GPS200 interrupter. The following procedure uses the optional, JR-2 adapter cable provided by AI.

1. Connect the JR-2 adapter cable to the JR-2 interrupter. Connect the other end of the adapter cable to the relay control output cable provided in the installation kit. Do not connect the banana plugs on the other end of the relay control output cable at this time.

2. Start the GPS200 interrupter with the following settings:

• OFF/ON synchronization

• Low output = Off

• Off = 0.5, On = 59.5

3. After the GPS200 interrupter has started interruption, use the exact time of the GPS200 as a guide when setting the JR-2 interrupter. Set the time ahead on the JR-2 interrupter to allow enough time to finish the procedure.

4. Before the next OFF cycle on the GPS200 interrupter, connect the banana plugs on the JR-2 adapter cable in the red (+) and black (–) banana jacks on the GPS200 interrupter and then wait until an OFF cycle has executed.

The red (+) and black (–) banana jacks on the GPS200 interrupter are typically used for the relay control output cable. Refer to Figure 3 on page 7 for location of the banana jacks.

5. The interrupters should now be synchronized (clocks are set at the exact same time) and the GPS200 interrupter can be set back to whichever program is required.
