MHIS300 Presentation The Vietnam War was a very contentious time throughout Australian military, political and social history. From 1965 until 1975, over 17,000 conscripts were sent to Vietnam. However, a small minority of individuals refused to register, as they claimed to hold conscientious beliefs which would not permit them to serve in the armed forces. This saw the birth of the conscientious objectors movement. This research essay will focus on conscientious objects and the ways in which the movement and individuals were discussed in the public sphere. The essay question is, How was conscientious objection talked about in the public domain during the Vietnam War? It will have a strong focus on the social and media history of Australia during this time, particularly in relation to the Vietnam War.The war itself received a significant amount of attention, as too did the conscientious objectors movement. As a result of this, there emerged many different mediums which discussed this issue, including television, newspapers articles, letters to the editor, books, images and information pamphlets.
