My dad is a tough guy. He never handed out compliments for the heck of it. You had to really do well at something for him to throw a few kind words your way. He was always pushing me and my three younger brothers to get better at anything we did. Mostly it was sports. For me, I longed to hear him

say after a game, “Son, I’m proud of you.” However, we really longed to hear the next level on his compli-ment scale. If we did something really outstanding, we would hear him say, “I just popped a couple of buttons off my shirt. I’m so dang proud of you.” That was the one we loved to hear. We didn’t hear it often, but it sure was special when we did.

Well, I think I am stepping into my dad’s shoes more often now that I am getting older. Today, I feel like my dad after one of his sons (he didn’t have any daughters) had a great game. I actually want to throw out his ul-timate compliment; “I just popped a couple of buttons off my shirt.” I think you, as an alumna(us), should have the same feeling. About what, you might ask? Well, about Maur Hill-Mount Academy and its recent success.

You see, this past year has been one of the best the school has seen in years. As you read through this edi-tion, you will see that our students and staff tasted suc-cess often in 2014-2015. Academics, athletics, extra-curriculars, and rankings reached levels of excellence that we’ve been striving to obtain for several years. As you read about 20% of the senior class scoring in the top 5% of the nation on the ACT test, the Scholars Bowl team finishing the season as the State runner-up,

or the baseball team winning both league and region titles and making it to State, know that it wasn’t luck. These results are due to hard work, a plan for success, and the commitment of a core number of individuals who want to see the school reach greatness.

Our principal, Monika King, and the faculty, deserve a lot of credit for the rise in academic rigor and scores. And so do our students, who have taken advantage of many of the programs we have put in place. The opening of the Flynn Athletic Center and the improve-ment of our athletic facilities (due to donors Mick and Marlys Haverty and a host of other supporters), along with the continual improvement of our coaching staffs, have given a strong foundation for our athletic pro-grams to compete for titles for years.

So let’s take a moment and revel in the fact that the Ra-vens are doing well. St. Benedict even suggests in his “Rule” that we celebrate the successes. Yes, you can pop a couple buttons on your shirt in pride as you read through this edition. And know that it was many of you alumni that made this possible when you stepped for-ward to help the school. To you I say, “thank you.” I’m proud for what you have done for Maur Hill-Mount Academy.

MH-MA Sports Recap

The winter weather may have been unbearably cold outside, but inside, our basketball teams were burning up the court. Together, the boys and girls bas-ketball teams combined for a 34-9 record, one of the best in school history.

Under long-time head coach Tim Van Dyke, our boys went 18-4 and clinched a share of the NEK League Title. The team went into Sub-state with a #2 seed, defeating Hiawatha before losing at the buzzer to Sabetha in the semi-finals.

Our girls team had one of the best seasons in the program’s history, going 16-5 on the season and taking 2nd in the NEK under veteran head coach Brad

Kunecke. The team also took home 1st place at the Raider Classic at Immaculata, where junior Avery Lewman was named MVP of the tournament.

The wrestling team also made some impor-tant strides this winter. Along with a new wrestling room below the gym and new singlets to sport, Coach Handke and Coach Surritt helped create a strong base to build the new wrestling program upon. Senior Blake Wilson was a major catalyst and a leader for the team this season, with some of the younger wrestlers showing great promise.

The track and field team had a successful season, sending several girls to the State meet. The 4x800 relay team of Catherine Campbell, Avery Lewman, Grace Siebert and Heather Ronnebaum found their way to the winners’ podium, coming in 3rd place overall. Siebert also took 6th place in the 400m race. The track and field team was lead by coaches Chris Prestegard, Manny Patino and Nick Surritt.

Just like head coach President Phil Baniewicz predicted at the end of last season, baseball came back this year to claim a share of the NEK League title and much more. The team ended the regular season with a 14-7 record and a #1 seed at Regionals, where they walked away the champs. The team earned itself a ticket to State for the first time in years. They unfortu-nately came up short against Wichita Independent but held their heads high with a season to be proud of.

Softball continued to build on its young program under second-year head coach Chelsey Matous, earning more wins this year than previous

seasons. The team co-opted with Doniphan West, add-ing new players with different skill sets to the mix. The squad showed great promise for future seasons.

Under the guidance of head coach Brad Kunecke, the golf team found success both individually and as a team this year. The team took 4th overall at Regionals, where Christian Wessel and Canyon Miller both qualified for State. Wessel placed 28th out 101 golfers at State, shooting an 84 on the day.

Coach Kelly Elias’ swim team impressively placed in every event this year and consistently set new personal records. Sophomore standout Alex Sataloff qualified for State in both the100m butterfly and the 200m individual medley, as well as the 200m relay along with teammates Carly Taylor, Theresa Curry and Haley Folsom.

Student Awards

School Play

The school took a wacky adventure to the wonderful world of Wonderland this Fall thanks to the Maur Hill-Mount Academy drama club. Under the direction of English teacher Sarah Douglas and music by Music teacher Joe Heron, the drama club put on two productions of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland November 15th and November 20th. Everyone from the cast to the crew worked tirelessly for weeks, perfecting the lines, preparing the set and practicing the dance moves that

accompanied the iconic play’s songs. People packed the MH-MA auditorium and filled the air with ap-plause after every performance. Rave reviews followed with compliments on how wonderfully the students brought these wildly memorable characters to life on stage. Cookies and other refreshments were enjoyed by all after the performances as a perfect wrap up to the wacky adventure that is Wonderland.

MH-MA Goes To Wonderland

This past January, 13 students and two chap-erones from Maur Hill-Mount Academy embarked on the long journey to Washington, D.C. for the annual March For Life rally. These students marched alongside hundreds of thousands of other Pro-Life advocates up to the State Capitol building in hopes of one day overturning Roe V. Wade, the law that leagalized abortion. This Pro-Life rally started back in 1974 and

continues to grow every year. The 15 MH-MA voyagers spent more than 50 hours on a bus, walked miles in freezing weather con-ditions, and sent up countless prayers all in the name of defending life. We are so proud of them for being part of the Pro-Life movement and being the voice for the voice-less.

At MH-MA, every student gets the chance to shine. Our students siezed these opportunities and were recognized for their different achievments over the year.

Sophomore Becca Butler and junior April Khanh Linh were honored for their artwork at this year’s Archbishop’s Invitational High School Art Exhibit. Becca’s piece, “You Were Bought With a Price” won the Juror’s Choice award in the clay, wood, and ce-ramic glazed tile category. April won the Superinten-dent’s Choice award for her batik piece entitled, “Adam Named Him Elephant.”

Art teacher, Mike Farrell, also had several students place in the NEK League art contest, including April Khanh Linh, Catherine Kerr, Jose Soto and Jinfeng Xie.

In just their first year as a team, the MH-MA broadcast students took 1st place in the 2015 KAB stu-dent awards in the high school play-by-play section. The winning team included Chris Mulholland (engineer and broadcaster), Stephen Akers (producer), Michael Rziha (play-by-play broadcaster), and Delaney Elias (cinema-tographer).

Several students distinguished themselves at the State level under the direction of Music teacher Joe Heron. Emmanuel Moreno was given a “1” ranking for cello at the State Music Festival- an exceptional ac-complishment! Katie Blaize was given an impressive “2” ranking for her woodwind performance at the same competition. Chris Rhiza competed at the State Piano Festival earlier this year and also came away with a noteworthy “2” ranking.

After qualifying for the State Forensics Tourna-ment, junior Emily Larkin advanced to the semi-finals (top 14 out of more than 50 competitors) in Poetry. Emily received numerous awards over the course of the Forensics season.

On March 25th, Archbishop Naumann celebrated a special Mass here in the MH-MA chapel, welcoming seven of our students into the Catholic Church. These students are such a witness to the faith that’s alive and thriving on our campus! Please keep Alexander Quaile, Jordan Huey, Sophia Brown, Emily Larkin, Carlee Cal-hoon, Carly Taylor and Alex Sataloff in your prayers as they continue their journeys in the church.

Academic Success After the flourishing academic year Maur Hill - Mount Academy has had, anyone would be hard-pressed to find many other schools comparable in success. Just to highlight a few of these accomplishments:

Twenty percent of the senior class scored a 30 or higher on the ACT (top 5% in the country). The junior class is inspired to surpass that average, with two students already achieving scores of 34 and 35 (36 is a perfect score). A total of $2.6 million in college scholarships was awarded to our seniors. Two seniors, Richard White and Mason Curry, were recognized as National Merit Regent Scholars. One hundred percent of the graduating class was accepted into college, including prestigious universities like The University of Notre Dame and Ivy League member, The University of Penn.

Our academic teams also found plenty of success in competitions this year. For the fourth year in a row, our Scholars Bowl team brought home the Regional Championship. But their dominance didn’t end there. With larger 4A, 5A and 6A schools as competition, our team triumphed over nearly all of their oppo-nents to claim the State Runner-up title. This impressive team of whiz kids was comprised of Ian Buhman-Wiggs, Alexander King, Holly Newton, Chris Mulholland, Anne Hrenchir, and Mike Poliquin as the team sponsor.

After 11 straight wins in the 3A Division, our Math Team was bumped up to the 4A Division at the Washburn Math Day this year and still came away victorious. Maggie Yin placed 1st on MH-MA’s team and 2nd place overall.

Under the leadership of Spanish teacher Manny Patino, students from advanced Spanish courses participated in the annual Foreign Language Competition at Missouri Western State University on April 9th. For the second year in a row, the team took home the championship in the categories of poetry recitation and slam, quiz bowl, spelling bee, sell-it impromptu, and video production (commercial and lip sync).

Mary Kuckelman, class of 2007, has joined the law firm of Woner, Glenn, Reeder and Girard, P.A. in Topeka, Kan. Kuckelman will work primarily in Commercial Law and Liti-gation, Bankruptcy, Business Transactions and Commercial Real Estate.

John Morris, class of 2006, is using a tragic event to help enhance others’ lives. Morris became paralyzed from the neck down after a snowboarding accident when he was 18. After years in his wheelchair, he saw an opportunity. Along with his two business partners, Morris created his own company, QuadshoX, which offers a new suspension system for wheelchairs that they invented themselves. QuadShoX won the largest prize in the 2014 Venture Accelerator Showcase. To read more about Morris, his company and his invention, search “John Morris” at www.source.colostate.edu.

Dr. Melinda (Morrison) Pregont, an ’05 Maur Hill - Mount Academy graduate, was re-cently named Benedictine College’s Young Alumni of the Year. Pregont, an ’09 graduate of Benedictine College, went on to graduate magna cum laude from the Cleveland Chiro-practic College in Kansas City with a Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2012. The follow-ing year, Pregont founded Trusted Care Chiropractic and now operates two offices; one in Atchison and one in Hiawatha, Kan. Pregont was recently added to MH-MA’s Board of Directors and will be sworn in this September.

Makinzie (Vowels) Burghart, class of 2009, married Eric Burghart of McPherson, Kan. on May 30th at St. Benedict’s Church in Atchison. The couple now resides in McPherson where Makinzie is an admissions counselor at Bethany College and Eric works as a PE teacher and high school soccer coach.

Maur Hill 1987 graduate and CEO of Blish-Mize, Jonathan Mize, was recently named to Ingram’s “50 Kansans You Should Know” list. To read more about this honor, pick up the June issue of Ingram’s magazine or visit their website.

Morgan (Nolte) Garbo, class of 2009, married Michaul Garbo on July 11th at Washburn University’s “Andrew J. and Georgia Neese Gray Theatre” in Topeka, Kan. The couple re-sides in Topeka where Morgan teaches 6th-8th grade at Chase Middle School as a Reading Interventionist and Michaul works as a maintenance technician.

Adam Gardner, class of 2002, was promoted to managing editor of the Atchison Globe this past June. Gardner has been with the Globe since 2012.

Lights of Love 2014

The Advent season is a beautiful time of prepa-ration for the coming of Christ. One way Maur Hill-Mount Academy prepares is with our annual Lights of Love Mass and Celebration. For those unfamiliar with Lights of Love, this is a special time for us to remember those who have been radiant lights to the world. We honor our loved ones with this Advent celebration and with our memorial Christmas tree display showcased outside of the school chapel. This year was no exception to the beauty that accompanies the Lights of Love Mass. Guests were welcomed by students lining the entrance way with candlelight before entering the chapel. MH-MA Music

teacher Joe Herron, along with Stephanie Sietz, pro-vided the music for the night, which was a perfect complement to the seasonal ambiance inside the chapel. Before Mass began, names of loved ones submitted by alumni, friends and family members of the school were read aloud and lifted up in prayer. After Mass concluded, guests were treated to complimentary wine, cheese, punch, and cookies while touring the student-decorated Christmas trees that lined the hallways. Every year, this Mass proves the same thing: There is not a more beautiful way to start the Advent season than with the Lights of Love Mass and Celebration at Maur Hill - Mount Academy.

Despite the ominous morning weather, it was a phenomenal turnout at this year’s 34th Annual Bob Goalby Golf Open on May 8th. The weather held off, allowing for a great day of golf, fellowship and fund-raising. With the new addition of a Goalby committee, some changes were implemented and great new fea-tures were added, including a Bloody Mary bar thanks to Dustin Hundley, a McCormick 360 Vodka drink tent, and three sausage stands made possible by Jerry and Bernadette Urban and Hank and Susan Keeley. Dinner and drinks were catered by Tanner’s Bar and Grill with Coca-Cola also supplying drinks for the day.

Great raffle prizes were offered once again, like a $200 Salsa Grill gift card (donated by Jon and Jamie Lomshek) won by Dan Nass; A Diamond Getaway trip (donated by Tim McGinley) won by Kim Lewman; and a Craftsman Pro-Series Riding Mower (donated by the MH-MA Alumni Association) won by Todd Caudle. In the end, the Goalby raised more than $84,000 for the school. Thank you to everyone who participated and to all of our amazing sponsors! Next year’s Goalby Golf Open will return to the first Friday of May (May 6th, 2016) at Deer Creek. Mark your calendars now!

Maur Hill - Mount Academy

Graduation October 2014, three Maur Hill - Mount Academy Home-coming queens were crowned at the 50-yard-line of Guy Galley Field. Flash forward to May 2015, three valedictorians stood on the graduation stage to give their speech while wearing the very tiaras our Homecoming queens dawned months earlier. That’s right- our three male valedictorians, Chris Mulhol-land, Jake Schmidt and Richard White, sported sparkling tiaras to pay homage to the class’s multiple queens and valedictorians, and it could not have been a more perfect addition to an already compel-ling speech. The three-part speech included tales of class memories, words of advice for the future, and a heart-felt expression of grati-tude to teachers and parents. It was even accompanied at one point by a comically poignant flute performance by White. Before the show-stealing speech, several students were honored for their distinguished accomplishments. Kaitlyn Miller was recognized as Salutatorian, as well as the Spring recipient of the St. Scholastica Award. Chris Mulholland was the recipient of the Spring St. Benedict Award. The Fall winners of these awards, Jake Schmidt and Addie DuLac, were also recognized. National Merit Scholars, Richard White and Mason Curry, received recognition for their accomplishments, as well. Commencement speaker, Dr. Steve Bellis, class of 1980 and current Head of the School of Pembroke Hill (Kansas City, Mo.), then gave his address to the crowd. This was a familiar feel-ing for Bellis, for he gave a speech at Maur Hill Prep’s graduation 35 years earlier as class’ valedictorian (no tiara was worn then, un-fortunately). Bellis ended his encouraging speech not by asking the graduates to go out and change the world, but rather, to just make it better in their own small, yet significant, ways. The ceremony concluded with the graduates walking across the stage to receive their diplomas and sign their names in the Maur Hill-Mount Academy book of graduates. With a final cel-ebratory toss of the caps, the class of 2015 processed out of the gym one last time.
