Hagupit enters Philippines tomorrow By Helen Flores (The Philippine Star) | Updated December 3, 2014 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines - Tropical

Storm Hagupit gathered strength as it

moved closer to the country yesterday,

the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical

and Astronomical Services

Administration (PAG-ASA) said.

PAGASA senior weather

forecaster Rene Paciente said Hagupit

was spotted at 2,265 kilometers east of

Mindanao as of 4 p.m. yesterday,

packing winds of 75 kilometers per hour

near the center and gustiness of up to

90 kph.

Hagupit – which means lash in Filipino – was forecast to move west-northwest at 35 kph.

“Hagupit is still too far to affect any part of the country,” PAGASA said in its weather advisory.

Paciente said Hagupit was forecast to enter the Philippine area of responsibility tomorrow morning and

would be locally named Ruby.

He said Hagupit is likely to intensify into a typhoon (between 120 and 140 kph) before entering the

Philippine area of responsibility.

PAGASA deputy administrator for operations and services Landrico Dalida Jr. said Hagupit was not

expected to become a super typhoon based on latest forecast models.

US deploys first advanced drones to Japan By Eric Talmadge (Associated Press) | Updated May 31, 2014 - 2:40am

MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan — The U.S.

Air Force has deployed two of its most

advanced long-distance surveillance

drones to a base in northern Japan over

the past week, enhancing its ability to

monitor nuclear activities in North Korea

and Chinese naval operations.

The deployment of the two

unarmed Global Hawk drones to Japan,

a key U.S. ally, is intended to

demonstrate Washington's commitment

to security in Asia as part of its

rebalancing of forces to the Pacific. But

it will likely rankle with China and North

Korea, which have been working to

improve their own unmanned aircraft

fleets.

Lt. Gen. Sam Angelella, commander of U.S. Forces Japan, said Friday the drones will remain here until

October, when the typhoon season on the drones' home base on the Pacific island of Guam is over.

Similar rotations from Guam to Misawa are expected in the future, though Angelella said no firm plans

have been made. He refused to comment on the specific missions the drones will carry out but noted that

the Global Hawk's "capabilities are well known."

The drone is considered particularly valuable because it can conduct long-range missions without the

limitations of pilot fatigue, is able to fly at a maximum 60,000 feet (18.3 kilometers) and can "loiter" around

any particular site of interest for 24 hours or more.

'Almost certainly extra terrestrial' - Meteor lights up night sky across New Zealand

7:28 AM Thursday Feb 12, 2015

A "blinding" flash,

intense explosion and sonic

booms experienced over

much of the country last

night were probably caused

by a meteor, experts agree.

About 10pm, the

flash, described by many as a

burst of blue and white light,

was seen from Whangarei to

the upper South Island.

WeatherWatch.co.nz,

which has a dedicated

meteors page, received

dozens of comments.

"This was an exceptionally bright flash of light across the country, with many people saying they

heard sonic booms that scared them and the animals," head weather analyst Philip Duncan

said.

'Almost certainly extra terrestrial'

Meteorite expert and former publisher of Meteorite Magazine Joel Schiff said he did not see

last night's event in person, but based on footage he had seen online it was "almost certainly

some extra terrestrial material".

"It's either that or it's going to be space craft debris," he said.

He said he didn't believe it was a meteor, and called it a fire ball.

"Meteors are just those little streaks of light that people see every night of the week, they're

just the size of a grain of sand and they come generally from comets. They have nothing to do

with this episode.

Why Ebola is so dangerous The Ebola outbreak in West

Africa is the world's deadliest to

date and the World Health

Organization has declared an

international health emergency as

more than 3,850 people have died

of the virus in Guinea, Liberia,

Sierra Leone and Nigeria this year.

What is Ebola?

Ebola is a viral illness of which the

initial symptoms can include a

sudden fever, intense weakness,

muscle pain and a sore

throat, according to the World

Health Organization (WHO). And

that is just the beginning: subsequent

stages are vomiting, diarrhoea and -

in some cases - both internal and

external bleeding.

The disease infects humans through close contact with infected animals,

including chimpanzees, fruit bats and forest antelope.

It then spreads between humans by direct contact with infected blood, bodily

fluids or organs, or indirectly through contact with contaminated environments.

Even funerals of Ebola victims can be a risk, if mourners have direct contact with the body of the deceased.

NOAA’s New Deep Space Solar Monitoring Satellite Launched

February 11, 2015

A new mission to monitor solar activity is

now making its way to an orbit one million miles

from Earth. The Deep Space Climate

Observatory (DSCOVR) launched on a SpaceX

Falcon 9 rocket at 6:03 p.m. EST Wednesday

from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape

Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

DSCOVR, a partnership among the

National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Administration (NOAA), NASA and the U.S. Air

Force, will provide NOAA space weather

forecasters more reliable measurements of solar

wind conditions, improving their ability to monitor

potentially harmful solar activity.

NASA received funding from NOAA to refurbish the DSCOVR spacecraft and its solar wind instruments

for this mission. The work was completed at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD,

where a team developed the command and control portion of the spacecraft’s ground segment, and

manages the launch and activation of the satellite.

Following successful activation of the satellite and check-out approximately 150 days after launch, NASA

will hand over operations of DSCOVR to NOAA.

“DSCOVR is the latest example of how NASA and NOAA work together to leverage the vantage point of

space to both understand the science of space weather and provide direct practical benefits to us here on

Earth,” said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in

Washington.

NOAA's DSCOVR satellite launches from Cape Canaveral Air

Force Station on Feb. 11, 2015. DSCOVR will provide NOAA space

weather forecasters more reliable measurements of solar wind

conditions, improving their ability to monitor potentially harmful

solar activity.

Posted at 02/12/2015 1:46 PM

MANILA - Singer-actress Sarah Geronimo won't be celebrating her second Valentine's Day with

boyfriend, actor-triathlete Matteo Guidicelli.

"Wala naman pong plano

kasi pareho kami yatang may trabaho sa Valentine's Day. May live (show) po for 'The Voice.' Wala, hindi kami

magkasama sa Valentine's," she said on Thursday at the launch of her

newest endorsement, San San Cosmetics. "Sa 13 ay may trabaho po. As in every day po halos ang

trabaho, so singit-singit lang ng oras minsan."

Geronimo, who is quite private when it comes to discussing her love life, did share that she and

the actor celebrated Valentine's last year -- although not on February 14 itself.

Asked if the actor has a Valentine's gift for her, Geronimo said: "Ang Valentine gift lang na importante ay pagmamahal at pag-iintindi." In the interview, Geronimo also gamely shared that

she and Guidicelli have mused about marriage. "Siyempre napag-uusapan po, pero alam naman po naming pareho na madami kaming dapat ayusin sa sarili namin," she stressed. Asked if she feels that Guidicelli is already the one for her, the actress said: "Masyadong maaga para diyan,

madami pa kaming dapat pagdaanan Meanwhile, Geronimo announced that her movie with Piolo Pascual is on again, despite an earlier statement from the actor himself that it might not push

through. "Tuloy 'yung Piolo po," Geronimo said on Thursday, adding that they might start shooting the film after her stint on "The Voice of the Philippines" ends. Geronimo also spoke on rumors that she might do a movie with Asian heartthrob Lee Min Ho. "Hindi pa kami nag-uusap

DOLE halts construction work for Taguig building after deadly collapse February 5, 2015 7:38am

The Department of Labor and

Employment on Wednesday halted work at a

construction site in Taguig City after a

collapse of a part of the structure killed two

workers and injured at least 11 others.

DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz also

reminded those concerned on safety and

health in construction, which she said has

been shown to be "a matter of life and death."

“Our occupational safety and health investigators had already served our Work Stoppage Order and

we have met with the MDC’s safety officer. A conference is already set for (Thursday) at the DOLE -

NCR. We will find out the cause of the accident as soon as possible and we will identify those

accountable,” DOLE Metro Manila Director Alex Avila said.

“This fatal accident, the second to occur this year in a construction site, reminds us how hazardous

construction work is, and therefore, we have to really pay attention to the safety and health not only

in construction sites, but in all workplaces,” Baldoz added.

She condoled with the families of the dead and sympathized with the injured ones.

"I assure them of our assistance. I also assure them we will those accountable for the accident

answerable for this unnecessary, and totally avoidable, accident,” she added.

The DOLE said this was the second accident since January when a wall of a warehouse being built

in Guiguinto, Bulacan collapsed.

Threat of Islamic State hits home in Asia AKIHIRO SANO, Nikkei staff writer

AMMAN, Jordan -- The

hostage crisis involving two

Japanese citizens came to the

worst end imaginable,

underscoring the grim reality that

Asia is coming under increasing

threat from the Islamic State

terrorist group.

On Jan. 31, days after the militant organization released an online video purportedly

showing the slain body of Japanese hostage Haruna Yukawa, Islamic State distributed a

similar video, this one claiming it had killed Japanese journalist Kenji Goto. Japan's

frantic effort to secure Goto's release through a hostage swap came to a sudden end.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe immediately condemned Goto's killing. "I am speechless

when I think of the pain of his family," Abe told members of his cabinet at a meeting to

discuss the situation early on the morning of Feb. 1, Japan time. "The government has

tried everything, and I am truly disappointed that it ended like this."

Japanese "nightmare"

The video shows a masked Islamic militant holding a knife and reading a message to the

Japanese government and Abe. Goto, wearing an orange jumpsuit, is kneeling at his

side.

The militant says he is going to kill Goto because of Japan's "reckless decision to take

part in an unwinnable war" and that Islamic State will "carry on and cause carnage"

wherever Japanese people are found. He added the chilling phrase, "Let the nightmare

for Japan begin."
