Azathioprine is an
immunosuppressa
nt, which inhibits
DNA, RNA and
protein synthesisand antagonises
purine synthesis. Italso inhibits
mitosis and
interferes with
cellular
metabolism of
susceptibleorganisms.
Azathioprine inj
should be
discontinued assoon as oraltherapy can be
introduced
Blood - Decreased
white blood cells
and platelets.
Gastrointestinal -Nausea, vomiting,
diarrhea andabdominal pain.
Miscellaneous -
Rash, hair loss,
fever, joint pain,
diarrhea, negativenitrogen balance
and reversible
interstitial lung
inflammation.
Hypersensitivity;
previous treatment
with alkylating
agents; pregnancy,
lactation.
-Give drug IV if
oral
administration i
not possible;
switch to oralroute as soon as
possible.
-Administer in
divided daily
doses or with
food if GI upset
occurs.
