The uniform design characteristics of all letters in the alphabet. However, this alone does not determine the standard of the typeface and the quality of composition set with it. The appearance is something complex which forms itself out of many details, like form, proportion, rhythm, etc.If everything harmonizes, the total result will be more than the sum of its components.The only reliable basis for the design of a type is a positive feeling for form and style. In order to be able to realize the concept of a typeface further development until the final type production, requires a large amount of knowledge and experience.

If one wants to achieve the optimum result of a particular type design, there is neither design prnciple nor any defined production system could substitute sensitivity experience and extremely subtle experimenting even in today’s type production. In every type design the basic character is determined by the uniform design characteristics of all letters in the alphabet.

Pepe GimenoBorn in Valencia in 1951.

Graduated from the Valencia School of Applied Arts and Artistic Crafts in 1969. From 1970 to 1986 he worked in various advertising companies. In 1987 he set up his own studio specializing in Graphic Communications, undertaking projects ranging from graphic corporate identity and signage to the design of publications and typefaces.From 1989 to 1992 he was president of the Valencia Association of Professional Designers (ADPV).

From 1990 to 1995 he was a partner in Gimeno y Lavernia, S.L. In 1995, he set up Pepe Gimeno - Proyecto Gráfico and moved the studio to Godella. From 1993 to 1996 he gave lectures in graphic design at the C.E.U. San Pablo University in Valencia. He is a member of the Type Directors Club in New York (TDC). In 1999 Experimenta Ediciones de Diseño published the monograph entitled Pepe Gimeno. 25 Years of Graphic Design.In 2001 he won the restricted-entry competition to design the brand for the Spanish Presidency of the European Union in 2002.

In 2001 he designed the FF Pepe font, distributed by Font Shop International, which won the Certificate of Excellence in Type Design 2001 from the TDC.

In 2002 he published, with the La Imprenta Comunica-ción Gráfica, the book Caligr Tipografía?.In June 2004, the Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM) put on an exhibition of his project Grafía Calla-da (Silent Spelling) whose poster won the Certificate of Excellence in Type Design 2004 from the TDC and was selected for Graphis Poster 2004. He was also a member of the organizing committee of the I Typography Congress held in Valencia in 2004.He also gave a workshop entitled Safari Residual in Boisbuchet, France, as part of the 2005 programme of summer workshops organized by the Vitra Design Mu-seum and the Georges Pompidou Centre.

His work is featured in the Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM) and in the Merril C. Berman collection in New York.
