Two professional skateboarders and accredited trainers from Skateboarding Australia (SbA) will tour Isaac region skate parks giving free coaching clinics and live demonstrations from 8 to 13 April. The SbA coaches, Pat Gemzik from Brisbane and Mat Chigwidden from the Sunshine Coast are looking forward to sharing board skills with local kids as part of Youth Week.

Mayor Anne Baker said the six hour clinics were a major part of Isaac Regional Council’s 2014 Youth Week activities, and encouraged young people to learn from Pat and Mat across the region. “This is a wonderful opportunity for keen skateboarders of any age to have fun and learn from professionals.

“The clinics will be held at our skate parks in Glenden, Nebo, Moranbah, Clermont, Dysart and Middlemount,” Cr Baker said. There will be skateboards and other giveaways as well as a sausage sizzle lunch from 12pm at each clinic. A Guardian Authorisation form is required for under 18’s to participate and forms will be provided on the day.

Mayor Baker said the 2014 Youth Week theme ‘Our Voice, Our Impact’ highlighted the important role young people play in the community.“In addition to participating in activities, I encourage young people to voice their opinions and feel empowered to contribute positively in our region’s future.”

The free SbA pro skateboard clinics start at 9am, finish at 4pm, and will be held:

Between us three Councillors we have spent 77 years making our lives in Moranbah. Despite witnessing so much development over time, what remains unchanged is that Moranbah continues to be a wonderful place to live and

raise a family. With thriving schools, numerous sporting clubs, fantastic small businesses, and a packed social calendar, it’s a great community to live and work.

This is why we strongly oppose destructive policies like 100% fly-in, fly out. Mining towns aren’t for everyone, but when people are given genuine opportunity to make their own living decisions, enough move here with their families to keep our communities strong, vibrant and sustainable.

Our town was built on mining, and we welcome industry growth. However we will stand against any policy that excludes our communities for employment opportunities, and economic benefit. We are not asking for everyone to live locally, just a fair go for those who want to.

Sharing theSchooling!!!

It is important to realise that our role as parents is far from over once our children have settled into school! You can have a marked effect on your child’s schooling by the way in which you decide to help.It is very important to realise that you will have a far greater influence on your child’s education than any teacher or school and it is helpful to work in partnership with them.• Introduce yourself to the teacher;• Let him/her know you intend to be a supportive parent;• If you are able, help on canteen duty, listen to children read, bake cakes for the school fete;• Join the P&C for your school;

Benefits for your childYour child see’s you as part of the school team! Young children usually get a thrill when parents visit the school for special occasions;

Your child will feel proud that you are able to help the school by organising special activities;

School RulesIf you can teach your child by example that rules at home and in society are important, he/she will be able to respect school rules and follow them more easily.

Parents who work during school hours

Many parents can’t help out at school, no matter how much

they would like to. There are still ways you can be

involved and show your child you care.

Even if you are able to visit the school only once a year, it will be worth it!Take time at home to show interest in your child’s daily activities. Look at school work, help with learning

words, daily reading, homework etc. When activities including parents are planned, try to be involved even though you cannot physically be there. Make something for a fete, send items of interest or information for a special day and don’t forget at the end of the day to ask your child how it all went. A working parent can do just as much to enhance a child’s schooling as one who is not in the workforce. It’s your attitude that is important.

Help in the ClassroomListening to children read is a very special role you can partake. The more often children read, or are read to, the better; Parents can play a big part by giving time that teachers cannot spare in the classroom. By becoming known to your children’s classmates and getting to know the teachers, you can increase that “family” feeling which is so helpful to your child. You are sharing in your child’s school life, and that will benefit everyone in the long term.Knowing you are helping will be like gold to your child. Happy parenting.

Your child see’s you as part of the school team!

Young children usually get a thrill when parents visit

the school for special occasions;

Research tells us that:

If children have an emotional or behavioural

problem, parents frequently turn to teachers for help.

Parents feel comfortable in the school environment, which makes them more likely to ask for help or support related to

their child. Parents who get involved

are more likely to understand and support any particular

approaches that are being used with a child, and will support

these strategies at home. Parents who get involved take a greater role in their

child’s education and activities around schooling, which leads

children do better academically and socially.

When we say ‘adventure’, we’re not just talking about the awesome range of outdoor activities that Scouts offers! In fact, ‘adventure’ can mean any exciting, novel or unusual experience, and Scouts offers such a huge range of opportunities that there’s always something new to try. And you can join at any age from 6 upwards!

Moranbah Scout Group has gone from strength to strength, over the past 2 years in all sections (Joeys, Cubs and Scouts) which have grown to the point that we currently have waiting lists in place for both Joeys and Cubs. We are in the process of starting a second Joey Mob and Cub Pack but require more leaders in order to do this. The leaders are doing a fantastic job in planning exciting, challenging and fun section nights and camps/overnight activities. This year promises to be another fun, action packed year with the Joeys earning badges, playing games, completing activities and attending Joey Jaunts within the region. The Cubs will be completing badge work, learning knots, playing games and attending a variety of camps as well as planning to attend Cuboree in September. The Scouts will be challenged with hikes, patrol camps, construction activities, a rafting competition as well as badge work and fun activities.

The group will also hold their annual group camp in Emerald, as well as attend several regional events including the regional rally and JOTA/JOTI. All sections will be participating in the relay for life again this year and we are hoping to see the community walking along side our groups.

All sections share a steady diet of self-respect, confidence, leadership, teamwork, creativity, environmental awareness and community involvement, and there are plenty of events and activities in which everyone can get involved together.Scouts Australia couldn’t provide such amazing experiences for young people without a huge group of dedicated and enthusiastic adult volunteers. If you’re aged 18 or over, why not contact your local group and find out how you can rediscover adventure too? It doesn’t matter if you’ve never been a Scout… we’ll teach you everything you need to know!

“Stronger Families, Stronger Communities”National Families Week 2014 - Written by MDSS Neighbourhood Program

“The family is the corner stone of our society. More than any other force it shapes the attitude, the hopes, the ambitions, and the values of the child. And when the family collapses it is the children that are usually

damaged. When it happens on a massive scale the community itself is crippled. So, unless we work to strengthen the family, to create conditions under which most parents will stay together, all the rest — schools, playgrounds, and

public assistance, and private concern — will never be enough.”-Lyndon Baines Johnson

The theme this year highlights the important role families have as the building block for our community and community wellbeing is enhanced by family wellbeing. The aim of National Families Week 2014 (the 20th Anniversary) is to celebrate the vital role that families play in Australian Society. National Families Week is a time to celebrate with your family, make contact with your extended family and friends, and share in the enjoyment of family activities. It is a time to celebrate the meaning of family and make the most of the family that we have.

Reflecting on the critical role of family, teaching, supporting and nurturing our children is a valuable role of the family especially as they grow as well to focus on supporting our elders as they begin to age.National Families Week coincides with the United Nations International Day of Families on 15 May. This day is observed by the United Nations to mark the importance that the inter-national communities place on family as the fundamental unit of our society, as well to show concern about their situation in many parts of the world.

In a world of hustle and bustle it can sometimes become easy to take for granted the bonds we have formed with those we love the most. We can sometimes forget the importance of showing them how much we care for, and appreciate them on a daily basis.

Mother’s Day Ideas...

Fill a jar with your thoughts

Source: giftsucanmake.com

This long-lasting gift is a jar filled with loving thoughts – one

for every day of the year. Make your own personal notes.

The hang tag reads…

“To last throughout the coming year,

here are my thoughts for you.

365 folded up inside,

to start each day anew.

Just choose one to read each day,

and know I Love You in every way!”

Some examples of the sayings are:

A mother holds your hand for a while, but holds

your heart forever.

A mother is someone with whom you may not see eye to eye,

but is someone who will always walk with you arm in arm.

For all the ways you’ve helped me grow, I want to say,

“I love You So!”

If I could choose from all the mothers in the world,

Mum, I’d choose you.

If love were a colour, you would be the rainbow to me, Mum!

Mum – I will never outgrow my love for you.

Mother’s Day Kids Page SpecialsIce-cube trays serve as molds, giving the fizzies their shape. Using a flexible silicone model lets you slide the cubes out

smoothly without breaking them. Show off the colours of the bath fizzies in glass jars with screw tops, the kind used for

storing sugar and flour. Pack each type of fizzy in a separate jar so the scents won’t meld. Write the name of the scent on a

vellum tag (choose a shade that matches the fizzies), and punch a hole in the top. Thread the tag with ribbon, and tie it around

the jar. Citric acid, a common food additive, is available at wine-making-supply stores, some spice shops, and online.

When citric acid is combined with baking soda and placed in water, a chemical reaction creates bubbles.

*Makes 1 dozen (Use 2 per bath).Step 1Stir together citric acid, baking soda, and cornstarch in a glass measuring cup.

Step 2Pass mixture through a fine sieve or a flour sifter into a mixing bowl. Stir in sugar.

Step 3Fill spray bottle with water, and add food colouring. Spritz mixture lightly (it should become damp but not fizzy) until you can pack mixture with your hands.

Step 4Using pipette, add oil, 1 drop at a time, until strength of scent is to your liking. Using a metal spoon or your hands, mix ingredients until colour is even throughout (mixture will begin to dry out; when this happens, spritz until packable again).

Step 5Spoon into ice-cube tray, pressing firmly. Let dry at room temperature overnight. Pop out of tray gently. Transfer to jars.Source Martha Stewart Living, December 2008

One spouse is a serial cheater. “Some men - stereotypically this is men - are just not cut out for marriage; they are unable to remain monogamous” says Bowman. What’s worse, they manage to put the blame for their philandering and untrustworthiness on you, usually for being too jealous or controlling. After the kind of affair a couple can recover from, “there are regrets, apologies, and promises to put an end to it and seek counselling.” Not so with the serial cheater; that’s a problem you can’t fix, and likely spells the end of your marriage.

You disagree about whether to have children or not.

There are many areas of compromise in a marriage, such as who is responsible for dealing with the finances, where you should spend the

holidays, how to handle family issues and so on. But if one of you is absolutely sure you want a child and the other categorically refuses, you’re in trouble. “If someone’s close to either side of the will-we-or-

won’t-we-have-children fence, you can work through it. But if not, and having a child is a life goal of yours,

you may be looking at the end of your marriage,” says Bowman.

You no longer communicate with each other. No problem in a marriage can be solved without open, honest communica-tion. If you’ve reached a point where all you ever talk about is mundane things, like who needs to buy milk, you’re in trouble, says Dr. Savage. “Lack of personal, intimate exchange in a marriage is a very bad sign, especially if you are talking to others.”

Behaviours that indicate your relationship is OVER...

You’ve “uncoupled.” Couples whose marriages are over, or nearly over,

have usually uncoupled, or disconnected from each other, says Elayne Savage, PhD, author of Breathing Room: Creating Space to Be a Couple. “If you’re no longer spending any time together, if one or both of you is spending all your time at

work, with friends, online—and if feels like a relief not to be with each other—it’s a sign that you’ve

already disengaged from the marriage.”

One spouse refuses to try There are a lot of damaging, seemingly insurmountable problems that some marriages encounter and rebound from, such as infidelity, the loss of a close family member and a long sexual drought. But, says Alisa Bowman, author of Project: Happily Ever After, if one spouse repeatedly brings up an issue, asks for help and makes it clear that the marriage will not last unless they both commit to solving it, and the other spouse refuses to go along, the marriage is in trouble. “One partner can’t do all the work alone - You can’t go anywhere like that” says Bowman.” A good rule of thumb: If it’s been a year with no progress, it may be time to call it quits.

There’s a lack of respect in the relationship. One of the most important aspects of a healthy marriage is mutual respect, says Dr. Savage. When that’s gone - when one partner consistently feels dismissed, rejected and condescended, to (and the other partner doesn’t see it or refuses to talk through it), you’re in a bad place. “Marriages that reach this place are toxic—you’re no longer civil, and all discourse is either attacking or defending.”

We may all want to fix an ailing relationship, sometimes though; it’s wise to know when to let it go. All relationships

are different, but there are some universal truths. For example, if one or both partners refuse to put in the effort

to save the marriage, it’ll never get fixed. Another factor is time: “The clock starts ticking on the end of a marriage as soon as one spouse puts the [couple’s] prob-lems out in the open,” says Bryce Kaye, PhD, author of The Marriage First Aid

Kit. “The more time that passes without any effort made, the lower the odds that

you’ll stay together.” Here are the 9-signs that your relationship or marriage may be

beyond repair.

You’re no longer a team.It may sound hokey, but it’s true: In healthily humming-along marriages, both partners work as a team on everything from parenting to running the household to supporting each other in career and personal ambitions. “If you’ve both started moving in completely separate orbits, or if you’re not working together on day-to-day issues, it’s a sign of serious trouble,” says Dr. Savage.

An unfaithful spouse keeps an ex-lover as a friend.

Infidelity is an enormous hurdle for a marriage to overcome, but just ending the affair is not enough, says Dr. Kaye. For a marriage to fully get past one spouse’s adultery, the unfaithful half of the couple cannot maintain a “friendship” with the former lover. No matter what he or she says about the innocence of such a relationship, “nothing good can come out of it,” notes Dr. Kaye.

No compromising in terms of wants and needs. A major part

of marriage involves trying to fulfill your partner’s needs and also making sure your own needs are

met. It’s a lifelong dance, of give and take, it requires constant communication. But if your

partner refuses to listen to what you need (time, affection, sex/physical contact, help with children or chores), or refuses to share his own needs, you’re

not in a good place, says Dr. Kaye.

5 Easy steps to keeping our brain healthy

Brain changes that can cause dementia begin many years before any symptoms

appear. Evidence suggests that midlife is a critical time to think about looking after your brain, body and heart. But it is never too late to make changes that will improve

your brain health.

Step 1: Look after your heart-There is a direct link to a healthy heart and a health brain. Eg. Stable blood pressure, cholesterol and weight.Step 2: Do something active- Be active on most days of the week, start off slow and gradually build up, something is better than nothing.Step 3:Mentally challenge your brain- Learn something new or change the way that you routinely do a task.Step 4: Follow a healthy diet- again healthy heart, healthy brain.Step 5: Enjoy a social activity.

In a firm bid to reduce alcohol related offences and anti social behaviour and to increase patron, staff and general public safety, the Moranbah Liquor Accord (MLA) have introduced banning periods of up to 12-months.

Senior Sergeant of Moranbah Police and MLA member, Michael Bailey, said the MLA decision followed recent, serious incidents, which led to two patrons receiving bans from all MLA licensed premises.

“Due to the serious nature of the two recent incidents, MLA members agreed last week a 12-month ban from all MLA licensed premises would occur and this included bottle shops and restaurants.

He said any person engaging in aggressive behaviour or fighting and involving the police would be issued with a notice to stay off all licensed premises in the Moranbah area as per the banning period set down by the MLA.

“The MLA is an agreement by Moranbah licensees and other stakeholders to take certain actions in our local community to improve safety in entertainment areas and reduce alcohol-related anti-social behaviour, offences and violence.

“MLA members are working together to continually improve the standard and reputation of our hotels and clubs by providing friendly, comfortable and safe venues for local community members,” Senior Sergeant Bailey said.

Senior Sergeant Bailey said Queensland Police served the banning notices, issued by

the MLA, to the recent offenders. Owner and Manager of the Black Nugget Hotel Motel and MLA Chair Paul Fenlon said the Moranbah Liquor Accord now has an effective form of communication between licensed venues.“Licensees and managers can now discuss serious incidents when they occur and issue banning periods applicable for all venues in Moranbah and surrounding areas to offenders.”

“If an offender is found to be on an MLA licensed premise, QPS will be notified and the offender charged with trespassing.”

Mayor Anne Baker said this significant step taken by MLA was a credit to their commitment to providing safer, more enjoyable venues.

“Badly behaved patrons need to be accountable for their behaviour.”

Staff from Isaac Regional Council enjoying the days entertainment

MDSS Neighbourhood Program celebrated International Women’s Day on 7th March 2014 with a luncheon and entertainment by Melbourne Comedy Act, Liz Skitch.

50 ladies and 1 gentleman enjoyed the celebrations with acknowledgement of the major achievements women have made across the generations and how much more work

is still to be done to be equal amongst men. Work is a part of Queensland women’s daily lives. It may be through a job in the paid

workforce, in a volunteer role or caring for family or sick or aged relatives.Research has highlighted several issues for women’s life and work.

Chris Macfarlan, Community Development Officer, MDSS Neighbourhood Program suggests through the Department Communities, Child Safety website that “women generally, have

lower levels of financial security than men and are under-represented in emerging industries. Families and caring are important issues for both men and women, however particularly for

women who usually fulfil caring roles in the family and community”. The site suggests “Women need to be able to balance their work, family and lifestyle

commitments. And they need flexible and accessible education, training and employment pathways to help them participate in the workforce”.

Chris thanks major sponsors BHP Billiton Mistubishi Alliance (BMA) and Isaac Regional Council for sponsoring the event. With a big thankyou to those ladies and

gentleman for their attendance and support.
