Messenger Volume XXIX, Issue 5 August/September 2017 It is hard to believe that a year has almost come and gone and my internship is coming to an end. As most Intern Pastors, I entered my internship with much excitement and anticipation for what lied ahead; there was much anxiety also. Entering into internship has many emotions attached to it as we don’t know what we are entering into; fortunately coming to Mount Calvary I experienced nothing but compassion and acceptance. I found Mount Calvary to be a Christ centered congregation who has compassion for those in the community and each other and because of this I felt accepted and this gave me room to grow and learn in my vocation. For this I say thank you Mount Calvary for a wonderful year of learning and spiritual growth. To all the staff at Mount Calvary I am so grateful for the support, patience, and understanding given through this year. I couldn’t have made it through my internship without any of you. I don’t have enough space to write of the wonderful and Christ like support everyone provided. The staff at Mount Calvary are the best and please support them in their ministry in Christ’s Church; they do so much behind the scenes that many of us are unaware of to insure our ministries materialize. I cannot say thank you enough. As for Pastor Tom and Pastor Rome, there isn’t enough space in this article to describe how much I learned, the mentorship I was given and the respect and compassion given by these brilliant faith leaders. I will never forget the opportunity I have had to learn under such a wonderful and powerful team of leaders, the Holy Spirit works through them in marvelous ways. One of many words of advice given to me by Pastor Tom and Pastor Rome was to come with my heart open and not be guarded. I took this advice and not only have I learned so much from our wonderful congregation but I have made a heartfelt and Christ like compassionate connection with the people of Mount Calvary. This makes saying goodbye hard as it tugs at my heart but as it should, saying goodbye to those who you love always does. God bless you Mount Calvary. All ya’ll go and serve the Lord, ya hear. Dwaine Sutherland Intern Pastor The passage of time never lets up. We are constantly re- minded of this by the changing of the people around us. August 8th will be Intern Pastor Dwaine's final day in the office at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. After a year of preaching, teaching, visiting, and caring for the people of this congregation, Dwaine will be departing for his final se- mester of seminary. We are grateful for his time with us and the way in which he has cared for the people here. Dwaine brought a sense of humor and warmth into his time as intern here. He was a valuable partner in ministry and he was a willing learner. Thank you to all the people of Mount Calva- ry for doing your part to help form Dwaine into the pastor he is and will become. It is hard to believe that a year has almost come and gone and my internship is coming to an end.

Dwaine Sutherland

Intern Pastor

The passage of time never lets up. We are constantly re-

minded of this by the changing of the people around

us. August 8th will be Intern Pastor Dwaine's final day in

the office at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. After a year

of preaching, teaching, visiting, and caring for the people of

this congregation, Dwaine will be departing for his final se-

mester of seminary. We are grateful for his time with us and

the way in which he has cared for the people here. Dwaine

brought a sense of humor and warmth into his time as intern

here. He was a valuable partner in ministry and he was a

willing learner. Thank you to all the people of Mount Calva-

ry for doing your part to help form Dwaine into the pastor

he is and will become. Your work with Dwaine will have

impact beyond our congregation. A special thank you to

Steve Holtzleiter and the Internship Committee for their

work with Dwaine. Please take the time to wish Dwaine all

the best and to pray for him in his coming ministry. Con-

gratulations on the completion of internship Pastor Dwaine!

For the past several years, Mount Cal-vary has shifted its emphasis from being a programmatic church – in accordance with popular church models of the 1990s and 2000s – towards remember-ing and reimagining its primary role as a community of faith. In this community, worship, faith formation, service, and meaningful relationships are the bed-rock of how we choose to practice our discipleship. With these foundational practices, the people of Mount Calvary prepare ourselves for the difficult work of being disciples in our everyday life. These emphases were part of the learning we underwent in our strategic planning efforts in 2014. During this time, we decided to focus on meaningful worship, faith for-mation opportunities for all ages, and a return to hands on service for our neighbors. These em-phases have informed all of our larger changes to our programmatic life. It is our sincere hope that by focusing on these important aspects of discipleship, the people of Mount Calvary will ex-perience a deepening of faith and be better able to listen to the Holy Spirit.

With this in mind, you will find below the new schedule for our Sunday mornings together. This year, we will be adjusting our Sunday morning worship times. The new worship times will be 8:30am and 10:30am. We realize this will be an adjustment for us all. We appreciate your flexibility in advance. This change in worship schedule will allow for a renewed attention to faith formation for all ages between services. Additionally, we will begin our second year of experi-menting with faith formation for all ages in the days after the ending of tradition-al Sunday school. We learned a lot from our All Always Learning 1.0 year and look forward to the continued adaptation. We encourage you to check it out.

June Council Highlights:

All staff and new council members, as well as exiting council members, spent a beautiful summer evening of food and fellowship at Dan and Cindy Sjolseth’s home. Thank you to the Sjolseths for their wonderful hospitality and great food! July Council Highlights:

1. Introductions and Conversation -- Pastor Tom a. What would you like us to know about you? b. Pastor Tom celebrated the gifts of new council members and

encouraged the council to take ownership of congregational leadership. President Brenda Teats welcomed the new members and encouraged them to listen to the congregation and to get to know the people.

2. Staff Updates – NaDyne and Pastor Tom a. Discussed logistics of being part of council. b. NaDyne provided an update on upcoming deferred maintenance expenses for the north

garage removal and upkeep of the church parking lot. c. NaDyne discussed the need to replace ovens and stoves in kitchen. MCLCW has some

available funding and there will also be energy provider grants applied for. d. Pastor Tom discussed work on the Dakota County Homelessness Work Group in

conjunction with the County Commissioners, the CDA, Dakota County Sheriff’s Department, etc.

Church Staff Safety:

There may be times when you come to the church during office hours that you find the front doors locked. This is for the protection of the staff members when there is only one staff member on the main floor. They have been instructed for their own safety to keep the doors locked until there is more than one employee on the main level.

To enter the building at these times, please ring the doorbell on the right brick column. This rings into the main office and alerts the employee that someone is at the door. To assist with this process, please identify yourself to the employee. THANK YOU!

The Calvary Carillons adult handbell choir invites you to join this small group ministry. The choir meets most Monday nights during the school year, and per-forms once a month on the sec-ond Sunday. The ability to read music is helpful and handbell techniques are taught weekly. No previous ringing experience is necessary, but a desire for fun and learning is very helpful. Ringers need not be members of Mount Calvary, and both women

and men are encouraged to join. Contact Alanna Teraga-wa.

Introduction to Chair Yoga

You are invited to attend a FREE session to learn about moving and strengthening our

bodies for optimum mobility, working with and through our limitations.

Saturday, September 9, 2017

9:00am – 10:15am Fireside Room

Who can benefit from Chair Yoga? EVERY-ONE. In many cases using a chair in yoga class is temporary, the chair can be a useful tool to provide stability and support for the vulnerable areas.

More specifically:

Beginner adult students who are intimi-dated by images of bendy yogis in mag-azines.

Adults who have limited mobility and trouble transitioning down to the ground.

Students with knee, ankle or wrist is-sues

You can do chair yoga at your desk, on a plane, on the bus, in a tiny hotel room, etc.

Objectives:

Walk away with a better understanding of what is available for you through yo-ga.

You will learn the basics of chair yoga so that you can fully participate in the Gentle Yoga classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00am – 10:15am.

You will learn basic stretches you can do on a chair at home.

If you have any questions, please contact Colleen Storhaug, Yoga Instructor.

Mount Calvary Stephen Ministers

By Wendy Lane

As spoken through the words of our own Ste-phen Ministry team,

"We carry a message of hope to those who are experiencing personal hardships by meeting with them one-on-one on a regular basis." "We listen and care." "We offer support in a non-judgmental way." “We are trained to listen, sup-port, provide Christian-based care." "We aren't there to fix the problem but to support the per-son going through it." "We continue to minister to our individual care receivers (who remain anonymous) and meet as a group to support each other as well." "If there is someone in the congregation that is experiencing personal hard-ship, please let Wendy, Pastor Tom or Pastor Rome know."

I couldn't have said it better myself! I am the Stephen Ministry Leader and would welcome the opportunity to talk to anyone that wants more information.

New Addition to Our Library

Check out the newest addition to the Mount Calvary Library. Brisket Cares is written by Sheila Hittner from Eagan. Their family owns Rack Shack Barbeque which is how they came up with the name for their dog. Brisket is a Tibetan Spaniel. She is a therapy dog who visits Trauma centers, Senior centers and Hospitals. Follow Brisket as she teaches you that love is its own language. This story allows you to explore your feelings with easy questions to help families explore their feelings to-gether.

Momentous Anniversary Year—Reformation 500

The 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Refor-mation on October 31, 1517 is fast approaching! Now is a great time to learn more about Martin Luther, his key writings, and their continuing effect on faith and life today. Mount Calvary is offering two opportunities for you this fall:

1) Wednesday night STUDY OF LUTHER’S SMALL CATECHISM – 5:45pm-6:30pm after Wednesday night supper starting September 13. Led by Rev. Joe Lees & seminary graduate Katy Ross, come learn about one of the most important documents explaining the basics of the Christian faith that has ever been produced. Discov-er or refresh your own understanding, while also im-proving your ability to discuss faith issues with your chil-dren and other loved ones. Luther’s Small Catechism is

rich in meaning, easy to read, and still applicable in 21st century Eagan, Minnesota! Come and together let us experience it again or for the first time!

2) Mount Calvary will also host a REFORMATION 500 BOOKSTORE October 1-11! What is LifeStories, anyway? The LifeStories Project helps older Mount Calvary members put down on paper, once and for all, the unique stories of their lives that make them who they are.

How does it happen? If you simply ask people to tell you about their lives, they generally don't know where to begin. And they often don’t think anyone would be interested. That’s where LifeStories voluntary “Listeners” come in. Armed with questions that can help trigger memories, we meet with one of the older members who’s volunteered to be a “Story-Teller” in a series of listening sessions, helping them go back in time and relive things through their younger eyes. We have fascinating conversations; we encourage them and empathize with them.

And a wonderful thing happens in the process—we develop an enriching bond with each of our older story-tellers. Not only do they have interesting lives, but they're endearing people with much to say and much to teach those of us who aren't as far in our life journeys.

How do the stories get down on paper? Listeners take notes and/or make an audio recording of the conversations. The idea is to make it in the words of the Story-Teller, though since people don’t talk in edited, organized sentences, some organizing and minor editing is needed. There are volunteers to help with the transcribing and organizing if you’d like help.

When possible, we take photos of photos from a photo album, or scan them in, and include them in the text. There are also volunteers to help with formatting and computer issues.

The result is a personal history focused on stories that would otherwise go untold--a priceless gift to the Story-Teller and their families.

How much time is involved? Story-Tellers and Listeners determine when, where and how often to meet. Typically it takes about 4-8 hours over 2-4 months to complete a LifeStory.

Can I team up with someone else to be a “Listening Team?” Absolutely yes—some do it already. You can even make it a family service project.

Who is LifeStories for? Anyone and everyone. Listening particularly appeals to people who:

Like to help others;

Enjoy getting to know and befriending an older person in our midst;

Like service projects you have considerable control over;

Value personal histories as a record of a person’s life and contributions to society.

Story-Telling particularly appeals to people who:

Want to preserve memories for family and future generations;

See life as a gift and want to celebrate it;

Are thinking about their legacy and desiring to give words to it.

Why is Mount Calvary doing this? LifeStories

Gives expression to our belief that all people’s lives are gifts of God. Their stories deserve to be

preserved and remembered.

Honors individuals and offers them companionship.

Builds our sense of community and offers an inter-generational service project to members who want to help others in our midst.

How can I volunteer to be a Listener or Story-Teller? If you would like to volunteer—or would just like to learn more about LifeStories, please contact Wendy Lane at the Church, or a LifeStories team member: Vicky Avery, Deanna Baisch, Rich Cowles, Karen Dare, Lisa Johnson, Debbie Nickell, and Mark Teats.

Writers' Group With help and encouragement from Mount Calvary's Writers' Group, members continue to scale new writing heights—including a children’s book being published, a rough draft of a first novel, multiple literary awards, a blog—you name it. We are a diverse group, ranging in age from 16 to the age where you stop counting, and from people who write only occasionally to tireless writers who've made writing a regular part of their life. We share a desire to express our thoughts and a healthy appreciation of life. Our varied perspectives make for insightful and thoughtful discussions. We share our writings for discussion and feedback, as well as our favorite books, poems, essays and articles. We'd love to have you join us. Contact Wendy Lane ([email protected]) or Rich Cowles.

Moving Forward… Easing Homelessness in Dakota County Community Forum, Thursday, August 10, 6:30pm-8:00pm

Shepherd of the Valley, Lutheran Church —Sanctuary 12650 Johnny Cake Ridge Road, Apple Valley Have you heard the good news? The Dakota County Emergency Shelter Project is moving forward to help those in our community experiencing homelessness. On average, 50 people seeking shelter are turned away nightly in Dakota County. Thanks to host churches and the broader community, 78 people were served last winter in the Emergency Shelter project. As a result of these efforts, we as a community have heightened the political and public awareness for those experiencing homelessness in Dakota County. The county is now beginning a planning process to provide a framework to create and operate permanent emergency shelter for a long term solution. Please join us to learn about plans to open a temporary/rotational shelter by November 1, 2017 and

the continuing planning/development of a permanent shelter location. Together we can provide the

resources and support needed to serve our neighbors experiencing homelessness.
