FEBRUARY 2015 HIGHLIGHTS Park Plaza and Plaza Specialty have many assets. These include our beautiful buildings, equipment, inventory, etc. But our biggest asset is YOU! We know we are able to offer our patients and physicians a special kind of experience because of our commitment to providing a workforce of the highest quality. Human Resources is committed to protecting our special culture and providing services and support to caregivers, so that they can provide extraordinary care to our patients. Our biggest goal is to retain great employees by partnering with leadership and staff to ensure that both employee and patient needs are met. Consequently, we are highly selective in our Recruitment process. We need you to help us find future employees who will support and build our fantastic culture. That’s why we offer referral bonuses; great employees recognize other great employees and want to work with them. In September 2014, employees were asked to participate in the Employee Engagement Survey to assess our strengths and weakness and how employees are feeling at our hospitals. We are very proud (but unsurprised) to report that Park Plaza and Plaza Specialty employees are very engaged! Our percentage of favorable scores was 80%, which is 7% higher than the average responder in the Tenet System. In addition, we increased our engagement scores by 4% from 2013. Many of our results are “Best in Class,” which means that Park Plaza and Plaza Specialty Hospitals answered higher than 90% of Tenet’s 100,000 employees! Some of the questions that demonstrate Park Plaza and Plaza Specialty’s “Best in Class” are: “I receive timely and helpful feedback that helps me do my job better.” “When I have concerns, people listen and help me address them.” “When changes occur that affect me, I'm told why.” and “I feel appreciated at work.” We have NO areas that fall below Tenet’s Overall Average. We always knew that we have highly engaged employees, great teamwork and timely communication; it’s nice to have proof now! We recognize there are always things to improve and correct. Together we can make those changes in 2015. Managers should have started reviewing the engagement results of your individual departments with you and begun the action planning process. The Human Resources team is busy working on other new initiatives. One we are especially excited about is the new tuition reimbursement program “Invest in U” which will provide 100% of tuition costs to employees who apply and are accepted into one of the six fully accredited on-line programs offered through the Baptist School of Health Professions (BSHP) in San Antonio. The six programs are: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (A fully accredited Bachelor of Science Degree program RN to BSN) Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology specializing in coding (A fully accredited Associate in Applied Science degree for coders) Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology Accelerated Alternate Delivery Program for currently practicing surgical techs (A fully accredited Associate Degree in Surgical Technology program) Certificate Program in Computed Tomography Diploma Program in Magnetic Resonance Imaging To obtain detailed information on the programs and courses go to www.bshp.edu . Click on On-Line courses for complete details including more detailed admissions and graduation requirements. We will have the program available for Summer 2015 enrollment. Finally, Employee Forums are scheduled for February 25 th and 26 th for Park Plaza and the week of March 23 rd for Plaza Specialty. Have questions that you would like answered? Come to a Forum and ask them! Or you can email them to me at [email protected] or Christine Kovach Britain at [email protected] and we’ll ensure that they are addressed in the forums. Plaza Specialty Welcomes Interim CEO

Steve Patonai

We are pleased to announce Plaza Specialty’s new interim Chief Executive Officer, Steve Patonai. Steve has been with Tenet for over three years and was previously the CEO at Frye Regional Medical Center in North Carolina.

He has more than 25 years of experience in hospital administration. Steve has spent most of his initial days here exploring the hospital and meeting Plaza Specialty and Park Plaza employees. He stated that “everyone I have met today was friendly and had a positive outlook. I am excited to be part of the family!” Steve has a master’s in business administration from Florida State University, a master’s in hospital administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and received a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Ohio Northern University. Welcome Steve!

Climbing the Career Ladder

Christina Mathew began her employment with Park Plaza in July 9, 2007, as a Pharmacy Tech. At the time, she was a freshman at University of Houston – Main Campus and was considering a career in Pharmacy. Her experiences at Park Plaza convinced her that it was the right career.

Christina enjoyed the environment of our hospital Pharmacy and her director, Paulette Bickham, provided her opportunities to watch the Pharmacists work and round with them on her days off. Although her schedule of nights worked well at the University of Houston, when she graduated and went to Pharmacy school at Texas Southern University, she needed a different shift. She was able to transfer to weekend evenings, which enabled her to still attend classes and study during the weekends. In fact, her job at Park Plaza was definitely a factor in her choice to attend Texas Southern and stay in Houston. Christina is now a full-fledged Pharmacist and will be working here per diem in her new role. Congratulations!

Trim Down Challenge

Park Plaza Hospital and Plaza Specialty Hospital will be sponsoring the fourth annual Trim Down Challenge – a weight loss challenge for all employees who would like to participate. Let’s shed some pounds and get ready for the summer!

The challenge is set to begin March 2nd and will continue for a twelve week period. Each participant will register and, if they choose, can pay an entry fee of $20 to create a “prize”. The top loser, as a percentage of body weight, will walk away with 60% of the prize, while the second place loser will get 30% of the

prize and the third place loser will get 10% of the prize, not to mention the start to a healthier lifestyle. Weigh-ins will be every Friday morning in Human Resources throughout the twelve weeks (alternate arrangements for weigh-in can be made) and to keep everyone motivated each week there will be a random drawing for movie tickets. More information will be distributed in the next couple weeks, so for now spread the word and get ready to join in the fun, lose some weight and earn a chance to win some cash.

PSH with two events!

This year we’re circling the wagons and havin’ a team competition. So, gather up a team of up to ten (10) hard working cow pokes and start giving a gander to your best chili recipes. There will be first, second, and third place winners awarded. And Recognition points will be given out for everyone who participates. Check your email for more details in the next few weeks.

Recognizing Excellence

Have you recognized a coworker or another employee of PPH or PSH lately? In January, Yolanda Martinez and Robyn Howell received the Staff Excellence Award because they had worked on a holiday to ensure that hospital charges were entered in a timely fashion. Also receiving a Staff Excellence Award was Jose Lopez, in Respiratory Therapy. According to Kelly Turner, RN, who nominated him, our “ICU assigned RT was unable to help transfer a vented patient to PSH. I called Jose who came to ICU immediately and assisted with the transfer. No questions, no problems!” Great job everyone! See extraordinary efforts? Go to https://pph-psh.werecognize.com/ and nominate them for an award!

Some of the comments included, “She is always asking family members if they need anything and she shows sympathy when [patient outcomes are poor] and the family is not doing so well.” She is, “Hard working, makes the unit run smoothly. She demonstrates great customer service towards relatives, doctors, and nursing staff.” Her teamwork was also praised. Nominations mentioned that Klametra, “anticipates events that are about to occur” and is “always one step ahead of staff and unit needs.” “She is never too busy to assist doctors or co-workers with help on the computer.” “If she sees any object in the walkways or on the unit that does not belong, she removes them.”

PPH Employee of the Month December 2014

Ashley Brooks

Ashley is one of our brand new nurses from our Versant program that works in MICU. She is very dedicated to her job and is always helping others when they are in

need. Many of Ashley’s patients have been so impressed by her wonderful care she gives them that they wanted Park Plaza to know how lucky we are to have such an excellent employee. This is just one sample from one of our family members: “My daughter was a patient at Park Plaza Hospital and had come into the ICU to be monitored. When I got the news, I was in tears and very overwhelmed. When I got to the ICU to be with my daughter, Ashley was one of the first nurses to greet me. She was so kind and gave me a much needed hug. She explained to me what was going on and displayed empathy and understanding. I immediately felt so much better afterwards. I believe Ashley went above and beyond as well as other nurses (Kelly) and doctors at Park Plaza.” - Family member

PPH Employee of the Month January 2015

Tashna McKoy

Tashna is one of our excellent nurses who works on 6 South. She is very dedicated to her job and is always helping others when they are in need. Many of Tashna’s patients and co-workers have been so impressed by her wonderful care she gives that they wanted Park Plaza to know how lucky we are to have such an excellent employee. This is just one sample from one of her co-workers:

“Tashna is a very compassionate. She has feeling of concern and sympathy for those that she is caring for. Tashna has the ability to give to the patients and others at the expense of herself. I have countless stories that illustrate this ability to others. This could be as simple as missing Lunch to hold a patient's hand or do something extraordinary for the patients. There was a day l will never forget when she was caring for a homeless patient, when the patient was being discharged Tashna, realized that the patient was going back to the street, and had no shoes on. Tashna gave her shoes to the patient and wore shoe covers for the rest of her shift.”

HR’s New Hours! Effective immediately, the Human Resources Department will now open at 7:00 am, Monday through Friday. If you would like to meet with a member of the Human Resources Department outside of normal business hours (evenings or nights), please contact Paula at x5167 to arrange a time to meet.

February is Heart Disease Awareness Month

February may be the shortest month of the year, but it’s enough time to achieve some big improvements in your heart health. Think about making one small change each week to lower sodium and control blood pressure to boost your heart health this month. Halt the Salt Most American adults (and children too) are eating too much sodium. In fact, we are eating about 3,400 mg of sodium a day. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend reducing sodium intake to less than 2,300 mg per day. Eating too much sodium increases your risk for high blood pressure, a major contributor to heart disease and stroke. Week 1 Read Nutrition Facts Labels. Processed foods account for most of the sodium in our diet, not the salt shaker at home. When shopping at the grocery store, look for the lowest sodium options of your favorite foods. You’ll be surprised to see how the amount of sodium can vary in the same foods depending on the brand. Week 2 Eat more servings of fruits and vegetables a day to ward off heart disease. A diet rich in fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables can help lower sodium. Week 3 Eat out less, cook more at home. One restaurant meal can easily add up to more than a day’s worth of sodium. Week 4 Eat less of the Saltiest Top 10 Foods. Here are the common foods that can lead to sodium overload: bread and rolls, cold cuts and cured meats, pizza, poultry, soups, sandwiches, cheese, pasta dishes, meat dishes and snacks.

Know Your Blood Pressure Lowering your blood pressure or maintaining normal blood pressure can greatly reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke. Nearly 1 in 3 adults (about 67 million) has high blood pressure and more than half of them don’t have it under control. Week 1 Check it. A normal reading is under 120 systolic (top number) and under 80 diastolic (bottom number). Track your blood pressure and discuss your readings with your doctor, pharmacist or other health care provider. Week 2 Take prescribed medicines. Remember to take blood pressure medications daily and follow the directions on the bottle. Week 3 Limit Alcohol. In addition to raising blood pressure, too much alcohol can add unneeded calories to your diet. If you drink alcoholic beverages, have only a moderate amount – one drink a day for women, two drinks a day for men. Week 4 Take time to relax. We live in a fast-paced world that’s often stressful. Coping with stress by turning to excessive alcohol or smoking can raise the risk for high blood pressure. Instead, take time daily to meditate. Sit quietly for 10-15 minutes, take slow, deep breaths and think peaceful thoughts. Need our cardiologist? Check out Tenet’s Preferred Providers: Drs. Alexander Chacko, Emma Cid, Gary Coleman, Dale Faulkner, George Kantis, Christopher Lavergne, James McClamroch, Margit Nemeth, Brenda Peabody, Chaitanya Shah, Leroy Sterling, Dustin Agan, Vincent Aquino, Bernardo De la Guardia, Bruce Lachterman, Christopher Nguyen, Ali Rizvi, Kozhaya Sokhon, and Kedarnath Vaidya.
