Sender Salon arrived in Merriwa about 1900, he built a baker shop just below where Cronin and Caelli built their garage (later Albert Coorey and now the BP servo). The old tin shed down the back of the block still houses the old oven which has a manufacture date of 1900. Various people leased the bakery over the years which later was called the Premier Bakery.

The shop appears to have closed in 1947 after which time it was used as a residence. Fred Johnston was using the old bakehouse during the late 1940’s and up till 1958. Ozzie Gaynor was baking for Fred in the old bakehouse up until 1956 at which time he became a shearers cook for Bob Young. Ozzie used to have a yard where he kept the horse and cart behind where the garage is now. Nick Hiles remembers Ozzie delivering bread on the horse and cart.

Principal’s ReportWelcome back to Term 3 the “new normal”. As the rates of COVID infection rise in metropolitan areas we are lucky to live in the country. However, as you are aware COVID control measures remain in place, such as additional cleaning during the day, antibacterial handwash in all classrooms, kiss and drop and parent pick-up arrangements, and no parents on site.

YEAR 12 FAREWELL

The Departments procedures limiting attendance of parents at school events has also impacted on our Year 12 farewell, some schools have cancelled these events for 2020. We are looking at how this may proceed at the end of term with reduced numbers of adults in attendance. Obviously in this rapidly changing climate of COVID 19 all plans are subject to change.

Welcome to Sam Smith (English Teacher) who has been appointed to our school. Mr Smith has been working at Lithgow High School since graduating from University. Mr Smith fills the vacancy created by Mrs Johnson’s transfer to Scone High School.

School photographs will take place in Week 3 on Monday August 3 on the primary campus. Information and order details were distributed at the end of last term. Student family photographs will take place at 11.00am in the primary library. All students are expected to be in full school uniform on the day.

TRIAL HSC EXAMS

Term 3 marks the final term for our Year 12 students. They should all be preparing for the upcoming trial exams with a regular study timetable if they are to achieve their potential in the Higher School Certificate. For those students aspiring to attend university the trial exams have greater significance this year due to the disruption caused by COVID and learning from home.

I would expect all students to be focused during study periods at school, and to have a regular pattern of study at home. It is a fallacy that students will gain entry to university based on principal’s recommendation if their attendance, and efforts in class do not reflect hard work and the potential for success.

These youth services are provided to young people throughout Upper Hunter Shire in Merriwa, Murrurundi and Scone. Youth Workers can access services for young people including Jobs, Placement, Education and Training (JPET), Adolescent and Family Counselling Service and the Upper Hunter Drug Action Worker if and when these services are needed.

Youth workers run programs that provide the following support to young people:

• For getting a job, writing a resume and interview skills

• Coping with school - exams, bullying and other stressful situations

• Advice and referral to services, including mental health - if you are feeling stressed or under pressure we can put you in touch with people who can help

• When you need someone to listen, one to one support and life skills groups

The following programs will be run this term by Upper Hunter Shire Council Youth Services in the secondary school:

This program will be run for all Year 8 boys. The program will run for one period a week and cover the following:

This program will be run for a small group of Year 9/10 boys. The skills group is called the Emoji Group and has been developed to help young people with practical skills for managing their emotions and dealing with teenage issues. The program will run for one period a week and will focus on:

• Recognising signs of emotion in our body – both physical and emotional

• Appropriate expressions of emotions, including anger

• The importance of relaxation, exercise and diet

• Issues the group feel are challenging for them at present – solutions based work

All other services will be continuing to provide one on one support to students this term.

IT’S ALWAYS FUN IN STAGE ONE

What a weird and wonderful time Term 2 was! Students in Stage One learnt about a range of topics over term 2 including athletics skills, food and fibre production and the past and the present.

What a character! Throughout English in Term 2 students learnt all about the characters personality, appearance and actions in a range of rich texts. These texts included Clancy of the overflow, Audrey of the outback, a monster wrote me a letter and what the lady bird heard next. These texts allowed students to be exposed to a variety of text types including a poem, novel and picture books. The other focus throughout Term 2 was developing students’ knowledge of narratives by looking at the development of characters, a setting and the correct structure of a narrative. During Term 3, students will begin taking a deeper look into the illustrations present in texts and learning about the information that can be decoded from these. In addition to this, Stage One will also be looking at information reports this term, learning how to distinguish between fact and fiction.

During our religion lessons in Term 2, students learnt all about communities. This included learning about the different types of communities that students belong to and what is special & about belonging to these. Following this, students began learning about saints and the qualities that these saints exhibit. Some of the saints Stage One researched this term included St Mary Mackillop of the Cross, St Mary, St Joseph and St Vincent De Paul. On our final day of Term 2, students from kinder to Year 6 participated in a range of activities which allowed student’s to gain a deeper understanding of the work of St Vincent De Paul. Beginning in Term 3, Stage One will be taking a deeper look into the symbols and ... Involved in the sacrament of reconciliation.

Over the past two terms, students have been learning all about the past and the present as part of their history lessons. These lessons ranged from learning all about technology in the home, transport and school life. As part of their learning about school life and the various technology which has changed in schools over time, students had a surprise visitor Miss Heart, who was a teacher from the late 1800s

there to teach children about the ins and outs of school life in that time. This allowed students an opportunity to teach Miss Heart all about the technology present in the Stage one classroom today. Over the next two terms, students will begin learning about seasons and places as part of their geography unit.

weeks of term, each student researched, tested and taught about a physical or chemical reaction to another class. Students in Kindergarten, Stage 1 and Stage 2 thoroughly enjoyed watching these experiments and learning about the changes happening.

During the final week of Term 2 students participated in a range of activities. On Friday students were split into age groups to participate in an athletics skills day. This allowed students to show their skills in sprint racing, long jump and shot put without the ability to participate in a normal whole school athletics carnival. During week 1 of Term 3 students will be awarded appropriately for their skills displayed during the day with an award for athletics age champion. The following students have been awarded athletics age champion for 2020; Mia- Rose Deemer, Myles Hvirf, Charlie Barry, Eddison Raines, Eden Barry, Morgan Bates, Lilly Towell, Shyanne Beeney, Jeremiah Raines, Annabelle Hunt, Archie Constable, Ben Patterson, Lula Peebles, Levi Hourn and Liana Pearce.

Whilst students were out displaying their skills, other groups spent time at school learning about and doing activities that relate to St Vincent De Paul and the wonderful work that the St Vincent

De Paul Society do every day.

At the conclusion of the day, students were able to participate in and enjoy a range of talents presented during our St Joseph’s got talent. There was an array of talent ranging from whip cracking, to dancing, to performing with accents. Students were surprised by an appearance by Moana (Miss Love) and a video compilation of TikTok dances by their teachers and principal.

Welcome back to Term 3! It was exciting to see everyone return.

CASSILIS REALLY MEASURES UP!

During the last week of Term 2 there were two open-ended learning activities which were differentiated so that each of our students could participate in the lesson, achieve success and be challenged, students completed a measuring and graphing task and problem solving task.

Taking his learning about paper planes to new heights, Paul shared his thinking with the class which was that the fifth flight of Bob’s flew 7.41m and it was the longest by a metre.

During a conversation with Dridan and Gordie at lunch, a lesson was inspired by Dridan’s query about whether the gum tree in the playground would hit the office building if it fell. Lots of discussion and investigation was conducted to work out how we could measure the height of the tree. One of the methods chosen was to use the tree’s shadow and the shadow of a student within a formula. With this method, do you think the tree would hit the office?

The students discovered that the height of the tree was 15.2m longer than the distance from the trunk to the office steps so the answer was a big YES.

PROPOSED MODIFICATION TO THE BOUNDARIES OF MERRIWA HERITAGE CONSERVATION AREA

Council proposes to modify the boundaries of Merriwa Heritage Conservation Area. The proposed modification will amend the Heritage Map (Sheet HER_005A) of the Upper Hunter Local Environmental Plan 2013.

Making these changes will enable Council to manage the heritage conservation area more effectively and improve community confidence in the Local Environmental Plan heritage map whilst still promoting and conserving local heritage.

The draft heritage map and report are available for viewing at Upper Hunter Shire Council’s Offices at 135 Liverpool Street, Scone, 42 Vennacher Street, Merriwa and 47 Mayne Street, Murrurundi during normal business hours. REFLECTION PENTECOST 8 - Matthew 13:44-58

There is a story of an Indian monk who found the world’s largest diamond. In a nearby village a man had a dream that if he went to a certain monastery he could gain enormous wealth beyond all his hopes. The villager arrived at the monastery and told the monk his dream. The monk explained “The dream probably refers to this”, and he handed over the diamond to him. The villager returned home with great joy, but that night tossed and turned. The next week he returned to the monastery, utterly exhausted and begged, ‘Give me the wealth that enables you to give away this diamond so easily.’

The two parables today remind me of this Indian tale. Jesus says that the reign of God is so great a treasure that it is worth giving up all you have. People who have had profound experiences often struggle to find the words to describe this for others. They find themselves resorting to images – ‘It is like…..’,

‘It was as if…….”. In the parables Jesus tries to find ways of explaining why the reign of God has so captivated his own imagination. Of course Jesus speaks of a treasure and a pearl he has already found while the disciples and later Christians only glimpse the God’s reign in moments of insight. And yet even these brief and veiled glimpses have been enough to sustain disciples for two thousand years and even today there are many prepared to give all they have in following Christ. These men and women have found the wealth that enabled the monk to give away the diamond. (From “Sundays Under the Southern Cross” by Mary Coloe PBVM).

We are still not open as a church, and by the sound of things it might be a while before it happens. We are certainly not able to sing, dance, or congregate together for a cup of tea! Other churches are opening, but we have

Our club has held its fifty first Changeover Dinner. It was held at the Sports Club, it being the first time we have been able to meet at the club since the Covid19 restrictions started to take effect.

The incoming board will be headed by COL BATES as President with WILL MULLIGAN our Secretary and MARK INDER our Treasurer.

We look back on twelve months, the first six being fairly normal. The second half has been anything but normal...with weekly meetings of the club being held via Zoom and later, food reappearing as we were able to meet and enjoy the great catering at Kylie’s 159.

Our Rotary District has adopted Integra as an organisation for special support this year.

Integra aims to assist in transforming and enriching the lives of Veterans and First Responders who are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder by enriching their lives with highly trained canine guardians.

At our Changeover Dinner we showed our support for the cause by presenting a cheque from our Club to Susan Hooper, wife of Past District Governor Graeme Hooper.

Casual Children’s Educator - Merriwa Activity Centre, this work is as required between 3.00pm and 6.00pm on school days and long days during the vacation period, it is suited to applicants over 18 years old with an interest in providing high quality After School programmes to school aged children. Formal qualifications are not required and on the job training will be provided. A current working with children’s check and First Aide training is preferred.

The Merriwa District Progress Association would like to remind residents that the Visitors’ Information Centre (VIC) not only provides a wealth of information for tourists passing through Merriwa, but also a valuable range of community services for locals.

The staff at the VIC provide friendly advice and assistance to local residents to access administrative services including:

• assisting with on-line access to MyGov services such as: Centrelink, Medicare and the Australian Taxation Office;

• computer access for setting up email accounts, checking emails, and browsing the internet, etc;

• performing scanning, printing, photocopying and binding of documents for residents who lack these facilities;

• securing bookings and selling tickets for NSW Trainlink and Sid Fogg’s Coach Service; and

• hosting a community noticeboard displaying information on local events and notices.

These services can be very important for some elderly residents and for anyone without computer or suitable printing facilities. The internet access also allows residents (including students) in remote locations to connect to the world-wide web to conduct business and study on-line.

While there are many residents who already utilise these services at the VIC, there are some who are not fully aware of the range of services available. The Progress Association urges residents to visit the VIC to see what help they may be able to provide.

Remember, residents can present their opinions and ideas on local issues to the Merriwa District Progress Association at its meetings held on the third Wednesday of each month at 6.00pm at the Merriwa RSL Club, or email [email protected].

Helping Hands is a volunteer network to help those who need it most in our community extending across the old Merriwa Shire boundary.

By staying in regular contact with local businesses and services, Helping Hands can help you stay connected with what’s available in Merriwa from the safety of your own home.

We can let you know what services are available and help you to access them.

We also work with other charities and community organisations to help distribute donated items such as food hampers, gift cards, clothing even occasionally the odd bale of mulch hay for the garden!

We would love to hear from you if you are a senior, living with a disability or someone doing it tough in some other way.

There will be more donated items and groceries coming into the district over the next few months so if this is something that could make a difference to you or your family, let us know. In keeping with Covid restrictions, we can only assist people who have registered with Helping Hands and given us permission to contact them.

Merriwa Pony Club53 riders had an absolute blast at the Merriwa Pony Club annual camp last week. Every day was action packed with a range of lessons and fun activities on offer. (No doubt this week there will be a few tired kids and horses!!)

Our riders were divided into six groups according to age and ability with the Mini’s, Shetlands and Unicorns representing our junior riders and the Gypsy Cobs, Quarter Horses and Stock Horses our Senior riders all lead by troop leaders Nicole Martin, Emily Ninness, Jorji and Darcy Taaffe and Roy Lawler.

For the Shetlands and the Minis the highlight of the week would have to have been the carrot hunt, lolly obstacle course, trail ride and colouring in their ponies with chalk! Many thanks to Sandy Vicary and De Patterson for going the extra mile to ensure the camp experience so memorable for our littlies.

For the older age groups, there was the thrill of cross country out at the Racecourse under the watchful eye of Bryce Hockings, Heather Proctor and Clare Martin, campdrafting with Sam Skewes, Maria Ireland, Tasia Martin and Wal Martin, showjumping and dressage with Marcia Williamson, Jess Somerfield and Chrissy Persson, Troop Drill every morning Jodie Provost, tentpegging with Steve and Tanya Ninness, utility with Clare Martin, polocrosse with Sarah Finlayson and Brett Prior and Flags with the fabulous stock horse ‘legend’ Bruce Withers. How very fortunate our young riders were to have this calibre of tuition each day.

To cap it all off the riders had an absolute ball out on the Common thanks to Tim and Pauline Lawler who never cease to amaze us with their creativity! The Stockmans Challenge was a wonderful way to end our camp for another year with riders having to boil the billy, catch a fish, milk a cow, rope a steer, crack a whip to name just a few of the obstacles on and off horseback.

At the end of the camp all the riders were presented with a certificate and prizes with an extra special award this year going to Wren Osborne for most improved! Congratulations Wrennie.

Of course, there are a lot of people behind the scenes that have helped make this happen.

To our supporters - Patrick Williams for the crusher dust at the cross country course, Rob Patterson for slashing, Bryce Hockings for ensuring all the jumps were in order, the Maben family for supplying the cattle for the drafting, Steve Ninness for freight, Wal Martin for the use of the mechanical cow, the Merriwa Campdraft Association for the use of the panels, Mudgee and Districts Working Equitation Club for utility obstacles, Husbands Saddlery for our prizes, Murray Wright for fixing our trailer (you did a brilliant job!), the Carter, Provost and Ireland families for coming down from Walcha to help instruct and to our canteen coordinator Kelly Curteis and helpers, Eat@153 and Alexander Downs - a job WELL DONE!

And last but by no means least sincere thanks to Clare Martin, Pauline Lawler and De Patterson for going to extraordinary lengths to ensure the camp went ahead despite all the Covid challenges. We are extremely appreciative of all that you do.
