CARTON/CASE ERECTORS

Mercer Technologies now has acomprehensive range of carton erectors,carton lidders/closers, carton loaders andautomatic packaging equipment suitablefor the Australasian and other internationalmarkets.

If reliability, speed, labour reductions,return on investment and acceptablepayback timing are required, look at thecarton erectors, carton lidders/closers,carton loaders bearing the AiCO brand,designed, manufactured, supplied andsupported by Mercer Technologies.

Carton erectors from Mercer Technologiesare precision designed, engineered and

manufactured from stainless steel with some industrial nyloncomponents. Carton erectors can be servo-operated withelectronic size changing.

Low, medium and high volume carton/case erectors can satisfya variety of applications, from entry level carton erectorsproviding 10 cartons per minute to equipment providing over25 cartons per minute for high-speed, high-productionapplications.

The machines are compact and space saving, fully automatic,incorporates a high speed hot-melt glue applicator andcombines simplicity of use with flexibility. The flexibility ofthe erector is such that a number of options are available forthe magazines supplying the cardboard blanks, both withrespect to the quantity of different magazines and location onthe erector.

The machines are easy to operate and depending on the model,may adjust easily for different carton sizes. The compactdesigns allow easy installation into a new or existingproduction line.

HIGH SPEED TRAY ERECTOR

Ideal for applications requiring medium volumes oftrays at constant supply speeds. Options includeautomatic pallet replacement attachment forinfeeding of new blanks. Machine uses blanks directfrom pallets.

TRAY ERECTOR - Junior

FOR ERECTING TRAYS AT MODERATE SPEEDS.A TWO STAGE LINE FOR ERECTING DOUBLEFOLDED (and glued) CORNER POST TRAYS.

Ideal for applications requiring low volumesof erected trays. All folding and gluing iscarried out on the AiCO erector. No pre-gluingor folding required.

Cartons of multiple heights can be erectedautomatically at will and withoutadjustment. Features include automaticability to erect variable heights and AiCO reliability.

Lidders / Closers

FROZEN LIDDER

The Frozen Lidder is a specialised machinedesigned and manufactured by MercerTechnologies for meat processing plants to lidbulk frozen meat packaged in cartons.

Ideal for applications requiring medium volumesof lidded cartons of bulk frozen meat and/or frozen primalsand/or chilled primals

The Machine operation is an automatic application of lid tocarton, for one of the lowest cost packaging solutions. Themachine will lid all cartons of a common base size. It uses a hotmelt glue to attach a lid securely to a carton. The process is aseries of fully automatic operations, the machine automaticallypositions, raises, lids, and lowers the lidded carton ready fordispatch.

Typically a 50mm lip is used on the lid. If two magazines areused, the correct lid is selected and glued to the tray.

BetaVac™ Vacuum Packer

Originally manufactured in 1970 to vacuum pack 14” longx 11” wide x 7” high x 20Kg cheese blocks for the dairyindustry in New Zealand. Reliable vacuum chambertechnology was almost non-existent when the firstBetaVac was tested. As PLC and HMI technology hasadvanced over the years, BetaVac’s features have beenimproved and ultimately refined to the market leader ithas become today. Over 150 BetaVac vacuum packagingmachines are now installed in cheese making plantsthroughout the world. The BetaVac is fast becoming theindustry standard.

• All BetaVac’s can be supplied aseither a left hand or right handedmachine.

• All models have water cooled andheight adjustable seal bars andanvils. To minimise downtime a spareseal bar is supplied with eachmachine.

The market has dictated the need for asmall-footprint, all stainless-steel vacuumpacking machine suitable for small meatcuts, pickled meats and specialty foodproducts. The BetaVac RV1800 is the firstmodel to be developed, having an 1800mmdiameter turntable with four packingchambers, designed to vacuum pack lambcuts, and specialty food products such aspickled meats and cheeses.

CARTON REJECTSYSTEM - WEIGHTCONTROL

The divert system isoperated when acarton is over orunderweight bypreviously determinedparameters. The datais obtained via barcode which is readjust prior to the divert.The divert will depositthe carton onto aplatform which isoperated by a rod-lesscylinder and lowersthe carton then ejectsit onto a rejectconveyor. Theplatform then returns to its position alongside the conveyor.

This machine was developed to resolvean ergonomic issue for production staffat a Cheese plant, where theproduction staff check the weight ofthe 20kg cheese block after it hasexited the blockformer, and the blockthen has to be turned to orientatecorrectly to proceed to a automatedbag gussettor, for the neck of the bagto be gusseted prior to being sealed inthe BetaVac packaging machine. Thismachine has eliminated the need forthe production staff to manipulatephysically one step of the 20kg block.At a production rate of up to 8 tonnes per hour, this is asignificant weight lifting reduction for the production staff.

CHEESE BLOCK RETURN SOLUTION

Mercer Technologies ability to offer customerssolutions to assist them is confirmed again in thedesign and manufacture of a 20Kg cheese blockreturn. Cheese blocks that are rejected or taken outof the process line for a number of reasons, can nowbe re-processed. The block is returned to the cheeseline by being extruded through the cheese blockreturn system supplied by Mercer Technologies.

Pelt SpreaderPELT MEASUREMENT AND GRADINGSYSTEM

AiCO Pelt Spread and Measure System machinedesigned and manufactured by Mercer Technologiesis an electro-mechanical machine that spreads andmeasures the area and thickness of lamb/sheeppelts. The Pelt Spread and Measure System operatesat a rate of approximately 10 pelts per minute. Thearea of the individual pelts is displayed on the‘Message Display’ after the pelt is scanned. Theoperator grades the pelt, then selects the grade bystriking the appropriate switch on the machine, thearea along with its grade is then displayed on the ‘MessageDisplay’ and can be logged in the system database. Both thetotal area of all pallets of pelts and the total area of thedifferent grades of pallets including pelts processed in aperiod or shift arerecorded. Records areupdated to aDatabase from wherethe information canbe further utilised orcommunicated to endcustomers.

MERCER PROCESS VESSELS

Forr more than 50 years Mercer have been working with foodprocessing industries designing, developing andmanufacturing a range of varied and specialised processing,mixing and cooking vessels. Building on the combinedexpertise of Mercer Stainless, Mercer Medical and MercerTechnologies and the continuous evolution of the hygienicfood processing industries has resulted in Mercer compiling afull range of process vessels.

The products illustrated are an indication of the diverse rangeof vessels available. All vessels are manufactured to meet thehighest quality engineering standards and are in accordancewith regulatory pressure vessel code requirements. Pressurevessels manufactured recently range from pressures of fullvacuum to 3,000 kPa and from temperatures of -200 degreesCelsius to 700 degrees Celsius and from sizes of 100 kilogramsto 30,000 kilograms.

Mercer Technologies can offer a complete range of processsolutions from design and supply of stand alone products to acomplete engineered system with installation, commissioning,calibration and validation. In collaboration with customers andbased on the process, latest control technology, and stainlessfabrication know-how, Mercer Technologies can design andmanufacture custom made systems to suite specific customerand process requirements.

COOKING PANS, VACUUM COOKERS, COOK/CHILLCOOKERS AND COOKING KETTLES

Used in the food, dairy, confectionary and beverage industrieswhere cooking and cooling of the product is required. Frombasic cooking pans, self generating steam jacketed pans tosophisticated vacuum cookers or cook-chill systems can bedesigned and supplied by Mercer Technologies.

Cooking pans, cookers and or cooking kettles can be suppliedwith:i) various tank bottoms from flat pitched, cone or dished

bottoms.ii) various tank tops fully open, hinged covers or domed tops

(either manual or fully automatic) andiii) can be supplied with steam jackets either self generating or

from an external steam supply. All steam control,reticulation and regulation can be supplied by MercerTechnologies including the steam generators or boilers.

Agitation configurations can vary from;i) standard squirrel cage,ii) scraper blade,iii) heavy products scraper blade,iv) total sweep,v) self clean,vi) tumble cook/chill agitators.

AUTOMATION & CONTROL

The automation and control system for thecooking kettles can be based on a stand-aloneentry level micro-controller or alternatively canbe up-scaled right up to an industrial computerutilising the latest state of the art model freeadaptive control software.

At the high end utilising industrial computers all theparameters of the process can be automated, communicatedvia a network and the data viewed and stored remotely.

All process information such as the endlessamounts of ingredients and recipes can becontrolled, modified, verified and validatedboth locally and remotely. Diagnostics ofthe process, parameters, failures andbreakdowns are available both locally andremotely.

PV VALVE - Patent No. 331111

A unique, first of it’s kind valve in the world, that deliversventing, vacuum protection, over-pressure protection and overfill protection for tankers or static silos.

The Mercer PV valve offers protection against normal volumechanges during transportation and routine operation. Itprovides pressure and vacuum protection of tanks and vesselsin potential failure situations and in addition offers protectionfrom overfilling should an already full tank continue to beoverfilled. The valve also offers a solution to the problem of onroad leakage caused by product surge because of theincorporation of a dwell time in the pressure relief.

The PV valve design has been further enhanced by the designand development of a patented filter kit to EU6 level that canbe retrofitted to existing valves. This allows for the protection

of transported food products, avoiding the possibility ofthe ingress of contaminated airflow especially whilst intransit.

All Mercer PV valves are able to be fitted with an internalCIP system. For those installations where the CIP pipeheader is inside the tank, cleaning is available throughthe addition of a directional cleaning jet positionedimmediately under the valve. External pipe work is easilyconnected to the valve via a teflon tube.

Due to the strategic focus on new technologies, Mercer haveaggressively gone about developing or acquiring innovativetechnology. All design, R & D and innovation is led by adedicated team of engineers utilising the latest 3D-CADdesign tools.

All control systems for the Mercer Technologies products aredeveloped in-house by our team of automation engineers,either using the latest available control systems hardwareand software, or alternatively developing state-of-the-artmicro-controller and/or industrial computer controllers withsoftware developed in-house.

The intellectual property and innovation developed isnormally protected and patents sought.

XFLO-EVAPORATOR

A Rotating Surface Evaporator patent is the culmination of 12years research, development and extensive laboratory testing.Mercer is currently undertaking design and development workto commercialise this patent for on farm milk evaporation. (Patent

No. PCT/NZ02/00224) The efficiency of the evaporator lends itself tobe applied to a number of other potential applications whichshall be persued by Mercer Technologies.

HI-PER WASHER

The Hi-per washer system is a patented culmination of years ofdevelopment.
