Key Assumptions

• The best mentors are not in the protégé’s direct chain of command

• Both roles must be voluntary• The relationship between the mentor and the protégé is a

matter of mutual give-and-take• The mentor does not always know what is right or best• The protégé takes full responsibility for all decisions that he or

she makes• The mentor’s primary role is to help surface options, not make

decisions• No mentor-protégé relationship is forever• The mentor’s effectiveness is, in part, measured by the

protégé’s performance

Potential Problems

For Mentor:•Time management•Possessiveness - Dependency•A Protégé’s Failure Lies at the Mentor’s Doorstep

For the Mentee:•Being the Object of Gossip or Jealousy•Having a Mentor Who Does Not Keep Commitments or is too busy•Dependency•Having Unreal Expectations of Success or Promotion
