College MattersPresentation Evening 2014

This year Presentation Evening is being held on Tuesday 25th November at Robert Blackwood Hall, Monash University, commencing at 8pm sharp. Presentation Evening is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our students in a wide range of areas, including academic achievement, leadership, community service, music, drama and sport. There are also prizes for outstanding achievement in each Unit 3/4 study. At the conclusion of the evening we farewell our graduating class of 2014 and wish them well in their future endeavours.

This year’s guest speaker is Anna Seddon, a former student who is currently studying a Juris Doctor course at the University of Melbourne. She is currently working in an Immigration Law firm. Alongside studying, Anna has actively volunteered in a number of roles, including Young UN Women Melbourne. This year she co-founded a feminist organisation for young women called Women’s Melbourne Network, aiming to build the capability of young women and provide a platform for their voices.

All parents are invited. You can book your complimentary tickets at: http://tinyurl.com/kr8etea

Rail SafetyI was recently contacted by a representative from Metro Trains regarding unsafe practices being observed at

Mentone Station. All local schools have been contacted about two concerns:• Students climbing fences at and around the station• Students crossing against signalsWhilst we are investigating having a guest speaker early next year to discuss safe travel practices with our students,

it is a timely reminder for families to discuss this issue. Safe travel may mean waiting for the next train rather than taking unnecessary risks.

School Council ReportOn Tuesday 16th September School Council met. The discussion continued on raising awareness within our

community and for politicians to bring the needs of our school to the forefront. A draft letter was tabled for council to consider and make comments on. A working party met in the Term 3 holidays to formalise the letter. This letter will be forwarded to politicians and those hoping to be politicians for our area.

Some Council members commented that they had difficulty getting interim reports and parent teacher interviews via the schools web portal. This may have come about because the notifications were not received. It is important that current contact details are maintained so that notifications are received. It was also suggested that future notifications have a bolder subject heading.

At the conclusion of the meeting we walked around the renovated Middle School wing. We were excited with the outcome of the renovations, in particular the theatrette and multi-purpose room(s). I am sure our girls will feel the same way.

On a side note outside of the School Council meeting, I was lucky enough to be asked to judge Year 9 students with their research and findings from the City Project program. Each of the groups that presented to me did so very well and with fantastic ideas on how to improve Transportation within our great city. Well done to all involved.

International Student NewsLast week we farewelled our first International Students, Tear Fan and Zoe Sun. Tear and Zoe started at MGSC in

January 2013 and have made an amazing effort to adjust to an immensely different culture and complete their VCE in a second language.

The establishment of the International Student Program at MGSC has been a steep learning curve, and we owe much of its success to Megan Gatt who laid the foundations for the program. Over the past two years, the International Student Program has steadily grown, with nine international students currently enrolled at MGSC.

We wish Tear and Zoe all the best for their final exams, and their transition to university. We also look forward to working closely with MGSC students and teachers to strengthen our International Student Program.

Final Assembly SpeechesCollege Captain

Mentone Girls. We are all Mentone Girls, sitting under the same Mentone Girlian Gymnasium roof, all breathing the same Mentone Girlian air. It is almost surreal that I am standing here today. Honestly, I have no idea how this has happened.

Upon picking high schools, I knew my heart laid here. Every open night, every school flyer, I knew it was in this gymnasium I wanted to sit in. In retrospect, I’m not sure why I was suddenly appealed to this school compared to the others, but there was just something about this place – something about all of you. There was this confident spirit in every one I had seen – perhaps it’s the confident people they choose to guide the Open Nights but I know that there was something special about you. You all smiled and stood in a way, I wanted so desperately to be standing beside. I desired the smooth silky caress of the blazer and the azure socks bunched at our ankles (that’s how we used to do it in the old days, for those young ones who don’t remember such marvellous days).

I wanted you Mentone. I needed you Mentone. But wait, just as I hoped we’d be together – the slip I received from primary school that so bitterly said I hadn’t received a place. After all the dreaming, the out-of-zone application and fantasying about the amazing life we could one day spend together – it looked like my interview with Ms Witt hadn’t gone as smoothly as I thought, and that you were miles from my reach.

Like the pathetic 12 year old I was, I cried. I sobbed my little eyes out; as I thought we’d never be together like we were on those sweet open nights and in my girlish dreams. I was, alone, vulnerable and quite emotionally scared, all due to the hands of you. I began questioning the future of my life, without you by my side.

But alas, in my lowest of lows, out of the blue, as if in a heroic attempt to save me, I received a telephone that said I was in! And just like that, it was like my favourite part of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. Tom Robinson finally speaks the truth about the Ewell’s and as “Judge Taylor’s gavel came down with a bang, and as it did the overhead lights went on in the courtroom.” Ding! Like that, with one sentence of truth, just like Tom’s, my world lit up because I knew you were the school for me Mentone.

And it was on that day that my relationship you became official. For a while, it was all sparks flying and heart racing romance. Every day, you’d make me smile and laugh. Mentone, you’ve made me feel emotions, I’ve never felt before. Never have I been so stressed that all I can do is crawl up into a ball in the Year 12 locker bay and lie there. Never have I been so scared of a man (Gerry) chasing us down the Junior School corridor with a dead rat. Never have I been so very happy than when we used to go down to the beach in summer and frolic in the water – only to have to walk back soaking wet. Never have I been so very sad as to when the horse couldn’t get out of the well.

But, my gosh Mentone. Never have I been so absolutely proud, as I am right now. We’ve lasted six long yet wonderful years together. But I’m afraid; it’s all coming to an end. Everything is said, learnt, done and finished. I’m sorry, but there’s someone else, I need to move on. Trust me, it’s not you, it’s me.

It’s this miraculous thing called “The real world” and it’s enticing me in – with such gusto and vigour that I cannot refuse. I just need a minute to say goodbye. The only thing that’s reassuring this idea is that it feels right and that I’m not doing it alone. Every single being sitting up there has a story and a reason as to why they are here. It’s somewhat ironic, that my reason is all of them.

This, today, and our exams – are merely the springboard into an ocean of greater, bigger and better things. I know we all have bright futures ahead of us. Like I’ve said before sitting up in those seats, I feel privileged to be in the presence of future doctors, fashion designers, Olympians, scientists, world class comedians, lawyers, film makers, musicians and journalists. This is all very hard to leave, but just imagine our futures! It’s all for the best!

I am utterly grateful for the incredible support from each and every one. Such a mammoth task simply could not be achievable without standing amongst such a beautiful crowd where everyone understands and supports you, as they are going through the same thing. So for that, I thank you!

I must also thank not only our devoted teachers this year, but all our teachers from Year 7 right up until now – as they have all impacted and supported us immensely.

All I really have left to say Mentone, is “I’ve got to move on and be who I am, I just don’t belong here, I hope you understand. We might find a place in this world someday, but at least for now. I gotta go my own way. “

6 MENTONE GIRLS’ SC NEWSLETTEREdition 17 | 30 October 2014

College Vice CaptainGood morning students, teachers and visitors, and of course a special mention

to the graduating class of 2014, my fellow Year 12s. My name is Jessica Haslem and for the last official time this year, I address you as the College Vice Captain for 2014, and what a year it has been.

I had my doubts about how much of an impact being a leader would have on my year this year. But to say that this experience hasn’t been the best opportunity I’ve been offered at school would be me kidding myself. You’ve heard it all before right? But not only did I get to spend a few days of my summer holidays on Leadership Camp, I got to spend my year really being a part of this College, meeting so many new people and getting to know the best School Captain, SRC President and Year 11 College Vice Captain this College will ever know.

For as long as I can remember I have woken up knowing that tomorrow morning, or after the weekend, or after the holidays I will put on my uniform and drag myself back to school and do it all over again. Well today marks my final day of school, the end of a 13 year long journey and there is no comfort zone for what the future has to bring.

So about six years ago my parents thought that it would be a nifty idea to try and send me to an all girls’ school, in a class with nothing but 25 other girls. Well at first that failed, I was rejected and faced the biggest nightmare of my life, that I may end up at Parkdale… But once third round offers came around my parents got their wish and I was accepted into MGSC. Either they knew that this school would provide me with more opportunities, experiences and memories that I could keep forever, or they wanted to punish me by surrounding me with a bunch of new girls, who much to my horror, quickly become my best friends. It wasn’t long before I had found my place at Mentone Girls’ as the round girl with one hell of a side fringe, but through the endless lessons and experiences that I have been presented with in the past six years, Mentone has come to shape me into the person I am today.

Year 12s: Six year ago years ago we were told that our high school journey would take place at Mentone Girls’. We came seeking knowledge, friendships and an infinite amount of good times. We have not been let down. Our teachers have inspired and challenged us throughout this to help us achieve our goals. Our family and friends have stood behind us to offer support and encouragement and we have worked so hard to get where we are today. Our year level alike, together we made it through a stream of ups and downs, and here we are, down to this very last speech, the graduating class of 2014. Together we have created an abundance of memories that will, for sure, last a lifetime. And we will continue to make them for the rest of the year.

I’ve joked a few times about coming back to school next year, throwing the books in my bag and rocking up like nothing has changed. But honestly, the thought of today being my last actual day is that terrifying that this is actually a plausible notion, and I am sure many of the Year 12s will have my back on this. As I’ve watched previous years of Mentone graduate before me, I can safely say that I never thought it would be us; it always seemed so far away. So far to even be properly considered. However, here we are graduating as the class of 2014, and by tomorrow night we will all be old people who don’t go to school anymore…

My experience this year has grown from the opportunity that you all gave me, and it is all of you that I will miss. I will miss my mum packing my lunch for me every day, I will miss Beth Sheppard breaking down doors, I will miss being marked absent when I was actually in class, I will miss having nowhere to legally park at school and I will miss singing the wrong words to the school song at every assembly for six years. But most of all, I will miss being a part of this College and around the people who make this school what it is.

Mentone Girls’ has not only enabled me to achieve my goals and ambitions to the best of my ability, it has provided me with support, and with friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. I don’t just see this school as a place that gave me too much homework or a jail cell of any kind, but as my safety net and a place I will forever be proud of. I make the promise that, wherever my life may lead me after I graduate, and let me tell you, my current state of unemployment is looking extremely appealing, I will never be embarrassed, but rather honoured and grateful that I got to spend the best six years of my life at Mentone with the best teachers and girls that I have ever met.

So again, I thank you all for giving me your time this year and the opportunity to be your College Vice Captain. This has been an incredible experience and I owe it to you all for letting me prove myself. I hope I have done you proud as it has been my privilege to represent you. Thank you.

MediaAfter an amazing Malcolm Awards night with over 10 films, photography and print on show from our hard working

Year 12 Media students, the results of their hard work is paying off with some early results in the film festival circuit.Celia Dent of Year 12 whose paper animation, ‘Kid Logic’ was a huge crowd favourite at The Malcolms, has been

fortunate to beat out competition across Australia to be one of only six finalists in the secondary animation category of the ACMI Screen It film festival. This is the 10th year of the festival run by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI). Celia has always been interested in animation and it’s a testament to her work across Art and Media that she receive such a great honour for her hard work. Often animation is overlooked to how much patience and dedication actually goes into creating just a few seconds, let alone a few minutes of an animated video.

Celia’s film will screen on Friday 5th December at ACMI, with more information coming soon. Visit the Screen It website at http://www.acmi.net.au/screenit.aspx and also see Celia’s other fantastic animation from 2013 on her personal Vimeo page www.vimeo.com/celiabow

Brainstorm ProductionOn Friday 17th October, the Years 8s watched a production called ‘Cyberia’ by Brainstorm. It was a true story

about a brother and sister and all the problems they had to face because of social networks and the internet. When I asked around, many people said the production was insightful and eye-opening because it showed situations that can actually happen in real life, instead of bringing up an over the top, dramatic situation that would be unlikely to happen. On top of being informative, the production made my friends and I laugh countless times. It was an enjoyable production and we would all love Brainstorm to come back again.

Maths @ MGSCEnd of Year Exams are Approaching

Our Year 12 Maths students are now within days of their first exams. This can be a stressful time so we would like to extend our best wishes to these students. We encourage them to spend the remaining time on constructive revision with a clear focus on completing practice exams.

Years 9-11 students will also be sitting their exams over the coming weeks, so they need to be well progressed with their revision and related preparations.

Useful ResourcesHere are some useful resources to help with student exam preparations:• www.mgscmathshomework.club.wikispaces.com – A great site to ask questions and access resources for

revision. See the links section down the bottom of the homepage for additional sites.• www.mymathsonline.com.au – The school has accounts for all students and these should be used for revising

topics in preparation for tests and exams. Worksheets can be printed or accessed electronically and students can sit topic tests to gather experience.

• @MGSCmaths – our Twitter account is used to spread information to MGSC Maths students. Check out our linked www.facebook.com/MGCSmaths page as well.

Less than 35 school days until the end of the year, so do your best and remember... “Maths makes a real difference.”Maths Domain Team
