The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) has announced its new Adventures in Learning lecture series, slated to begin on Sunday, February 26, with a talk entitled “Hunting Dinosaurs” by paleontologist Dr. Matt Lamanna, Assistant Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh. This museum houses one of the world’s largest dinosaur collections. Following on Sunday, March 19 will be a lecture by sea turtle biologist and conservation advocate Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, on the topic “Water for Well-Being.” Both programs will run from 3 – 4 pm at the ELC campus off CR 510. Dinosaur hunter Dr. Lamanna has roamed the world in pursuit of dinosaurs and their history, including new fossil evidence of dinosaur birds. He was part of the excavation team that discovered “Dreadnoughtus,” one of the largest animals to ever walk the earth, in the south Patagonia region of Argentina. He has been featured in programs on PBS (Nova), the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, A&E, and the Science Channel. His writings on the understanding of dinosaur biology include scientific papers and books as well as articles in The New York Times and Science. Dr. Nichols is author of the New York Times best-selling book Blue Mind: How Water Makes You Happier, More Connected and Better at What You Do. In it he makes the case that proximity to water – in, on, under or simply near water – can increase calm and diminish anxiety, and even improve performance and increase professional success. His other research interests range widely, from aquatic ecosystems and migratory species to marine protected areas, as well as the impact of water on the human mind, his topic for this talk. He is a research associate at the California Academy of Sciences and co-founder of Ocean Revolution, WILD, Grupo Tortuguero and Blue Mind Fund. He has been featured extensively on radio, television and in the print media. Registration is

  • required. The cost for each lecture is $20 for adults and children age 12 and up, and $10 for students with ID and children ages 2 – ll. ELC members will pay $18 and $9 respectively. Free admission is available with proof of financial need. You can reserve your seat online at bit.ly/discoverelc. The Environmental Learning Center is located north of Vero Beach off County Road 510 at the western end of the Wabasso Bridge. Its 64-acre campus includes the Discovery Station Interactive Museum, dip-netting pond, native plant gardens, Imagination Station play area, picnic facilities, and visitor center. For ELC membership benefits, birthday party & room rental opportunities, group activities, EcoTalks Speaker Series, and EcoAdventures excursions, including nature walks, canoe trips, and weekly Pelican Island pontoon boat rides go to http://www.discoverELC.org. 255 Live Oak Drive, Vero Beach, FL 32963 Orchid Island Members are very passionate about the environment and are true

advocates in protecting it, so choosing the Environmental Learning Center (ELC) as their charity beneficiary for the 2018 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship went without question. “Many of our Members support the ELC’s mission to educate people to be stewards of the environment, and this is another way for us to thank them for outstanding work,” shared Ted Hutton, Orchid Island Chairman of the Host Committee.

“Chosen as the Championship charity beneficiary is a game-changer for ELC. Neighbor to Orchid Island, we are an island-based nature center, offering countless recreational, educational and wellness programs for our community. But in some ways we are a ‘best kept secret,’ in that many people do not know of us or all we offer. Being beneficiary both strengthens us financially and widely spreads word of our non-profit work; the latter, I am sure, will have immense, immeasurable positive impact in enabling us to fulfill our mission. We are thrilled,” expressed Molly Steinwald, ELC Executive Director. In 2005 Orchid Island achieved distinction as a Certified Audubon Sanctuary from Audubon International and has maintained its certification annually ever since. Orchid Island’s award winning Arnold Palmer Championship golf course is set to a beautiful backdrop of historic oak trees, superior grasses and lush landscaping, which makes it an exceptional location for the 57th U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship in October 2018. The U.S. Senior Women's Amateur was first conducted in 1962 and is the Premier Amateur Golf Championship for women 50 years old and over. In 2018, 132 women will compete at Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club for the chance to be crowned "National Champion." Indian River Medical Center (IRMC) announced that the hospital’s main laboratory

was awarded accreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). The CAP

Accreditation Committee gave IRMC this accreditation based on results of recent

on-site inspections. IRMC’s laboratory medical director, Kali Freeman, MD, was

advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the excellence of the

services being provided. IRMC’s lab is one of more than 7,700 CAP-accredited

    http://www.discoverelc.org/

  • facilities worldwide. “The work that goes into maintaining this accreditation is

tremendous, but it is done all in the name of better quality for our patients,” Dr.

Freeman said. “The value of having an on-site lab which

produces accurate and timely results is imperative. It is

almost impossible for a physician to provide a thorough

diagnosis without the assistance of the lab.” The U.S.

federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory

Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960s, as being

equal to or more stringent than the government's own

inspection program. During the CAP accreditation process,

designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all

laboratory patients, inspectors examine the laboratory's

records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors

also examine laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and

    record, and overall management.

Last month Randy “Handsome Ransom” Jackson, who played for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers

from 1956-58, made his first visit to Historic Dodgertown since his playing days. Ransom, who turned 91 on

Feb. 10, will take a walk down memory lane, and share those memories with Historic Dodgertown visitors and Presidents’ Day Tournament participants. Jackson recently published an autobiographical memoir in which he chronicles his life from growing up in Arkansas to being signed to take over for Jackie Robinson, only to quickly discover nobody replaces a legend like Jackie. "I have fond memories of Dodgertown and the three spring training camps I was there with such Dodger icons as Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Duke Snider, Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax,” said Jackson. “It was a special time at a special place that has become extra special after 61 years. For at least one weekend, it will be 1958 all over again. That was the last time I was there." Handsome Ransom Jackson, Accidental Big Leaguer takes readers from his youth to playing for the Chicago Cubs, Dodgers and Cleveland Indians, including playing in the 1956 World Series and two Major League Baseball All-Star Games. He also played three years of college football at Texas Christian University and the University of Texas, where he competed in two Cotton Bowl Classics. Jackson’s book is co-authored by Gaylon White. Jackson’s visit aligned with Historic Dodgertown’s annual Presidents’ Day Challenge. Nearly 90 teams made up of youth ages 9U to 18U from 12 states and Canada will descend upon Vero Beach for this weekend tournament. In addition to his visit to Historic Dodgertown, Jackson made an appearance at the Vero Beach Book Center to autograph his book.

Marine Bank & Trust Company has announced strong earnings and

asset growth for 2016 with $211 million in total assets as of

September 30, 2016 compared to $193 million as of December 31,

2015. As a result of its solid performance, Marine Bank maintained its

5-Star Superior rating from Bauer Financial, the nation’s premier

bank rating firm. Marine Bank’s strong capital position enabled the

Bank to focus on growth, invest in technology upgrades and expand

into a new geographic market. The Bank has reported a net profit of

$900,000 for 2016. Earnings were impacted from increased expenses due to a one-

time expenditure for a major technology upgrade in the first half of 2016 and the

purchase of the Sebastian Banking Center in the fourth quarter. Topline revenue is up

11% year over year due to growth in the loan portfolio and customer deposit

accounts. The technology upgrade has enabled the bank to offer new services

including mobile banking, mobile check deposit, e-statements, electronic signatures,

    http://www.firefightersfair.org/

  • and enhanced online capability and security. The Bank is now realizing the benefits of

this new technology platform with better access to customer information resulting in

better service for its customers. The Bank’s positive operating performance continues

to be driven by new residential mortgages, small business loan growth, an increase in

deposit accounts and new customer relationships. With the growth in Indian River

County housing and a specialty in residential lending, Marine is moving toward its goal

of being the market’s leading mortgage lender. In 2016, the Bank put 109 families in

new homes and originated 170 residential loans for $48 million. Marine Bank has also

provided 51 companies with the opportunity to expand their businesses with $17 million

in business loans closed during the same period. In October, the Bank finalized the

purchase of the Valley National Bank banking center located at 1020 US Highway 1 in

Sebastian, adding 565 new customers, $13 million in customer deposits and three new

employees. The Sebastian customers officially became customers of Marine Bank on

    http://www.vnatc.com/

  • Lagoon in Palm Beach. Sponsored by the Palm Beach Sailing Club, the regatta was

sailed in conditions particularly challenging for the visiting sailors, but the unpredictable

winds which occasionally shifted 180 degrees, numerous moored boats which blocked

the breeze and created pockets of calm, and unfamiliar tidal currents did not deter our

young sailors. Eleven-year-olds Shae Riley and Peter Swanson placed 8th and 12th

respectively in the Opti class, representing YSF’s elementary and middle-school sailors

with fine performances against fourteen other sailors, many of whom were sailing their

home waters. Eight Youth Sailing Foundation (YSF) high school sailors competed in a

field of 20 teams at last Saturday’s Crossroads High School Regatta, hosted by the US

Sailing Center – Martin County in Jensen Beach. Conditions on the Indian River

Lagoon were light to medium winds on a beautiful mid-winter day with temperatures in

the mid 70’s. Ten races were sailed with the cumulative score determining the overall

place for each boat. YSF is committed to providing the tools and resources to help

youngsters reach their full potential in life. Over 700 children have already participated

in our sailing programs, which instill confidence, self-esteem and independence in our

students. For more information about our sailing programs and volunteer opportunities
