Presidents Report (transcript text) Richard Mair

Well, what a year! I don’t even feel like I can comment on it because I haven’t been

around much to be honest, but given the club still had a good year, we should be

proud of ourselves. We managed to host all our golf days with nothing cancelled

except the Match Play Championship, which is a very good effort in my opinion.

13 PT events plus the January Invitational, Summer Cup, Interbank, RS Elliott, Bank

Holiday, Winter Cup, Westpac Challenge, Coffs Trip and the Xmas 2-Ball is a busy

year by any standards, and during COVID is an even better achievement. Its

testament to our members and their love for the game, and unwavering support for

our club. Thank you all.

Thanks to everyone in the Committee this year – it was a tough one with remote

meetings, long-standing action items and some serious changes to plan & implement

meant we were tested, but came through with what I am confident are some

positive changes for the club. These will be discussed tonight, and I am sure that

most, if not all of them will be well received.

I would like to name the usual suspects and thank them personally for all their great

work – Tiger, Craig Horley, Stephen Mccammond, George Emerson, Dave McCann,

Glen Williamson, Graham Flanagan, Terry Hillman, Warren Francis & Dom Khoury.

We’ve had some great support from sponsors this year as well, and without these

our club would certainly struggle. Thanks to Gateway Bank, Steve Chan, Pat Wong &

Dolphin Powder Coatings, HT Tran, Ted Geekie, Steve Iacono, Peter Bendeich, Glen

Williamson and of course all our life members. If I have missed anyone – I am sorry

and your support is greatly appreciated.

As usual, Tiger will talk more about the golf but I would like to call out two specific

golfers. Firstly, a big congrats to Rudi Minbatiwala for his win in the January

President’s Invitational at my home course – Ryde Parramatta. It’s generally tough

for the higher handicappers with lots of trees, water and forced carries but he did

very well with 40 points off 26, and a comfortable win! This set the tone for a good

year, with a 4 PT wins and a lot of solid golf. Unfortunately though he was pipped

Page 3: (Life Member & Patron) (Life Member) (2020 Life Member ...

Page | 3

right at the end by my second callout, the PT winner for 2020, Glen Williamson. If

you look at his results, they were so consistent it was almost boring! 6 top 10s, one

win and one third place as well as the winning the Winter Cup is a very good year! As

well all know, consistency is the name of the game and he did this in a textbook

fashion. Well done Glen!

In January, the President’s invitational will again be held at Ryde Parramatta for the

3rd time. Along with Glen (of course!) we’ll have 13 others join Tiger & myself on Jan

17th for what will hopefully be a good day of golf. Well done to all the winners from

this year - we’ll look forward to seeing Rudi, Michael V, Flano, John Klincke, Waz,

Chuck, Wardy, Steve Wise, Terry, Eddy, Mr Greg, Pat Walton and the Mouse next

month. I will send out the details for this in the next week or two.

That’s it from me – thanks again to everyone for your support this year and we’ll see

you in 2021!

Treasurers Report Year Ended 30th November 2020 (transcript text) George Emerson Despite a difficult year it is pleasing to be able to report a profit for the year of $1368 compared to 2019 of $140. Cash & equivalents @ year end amounted to $20,409 compared to $19,040 in 2019 Member numbers increased slightly from 63 to 65 at year end comprising 56 ordinary and 9 Life members. Principal contributors to the better result were- Bank Holiday While we were forced to restrict numbers due to Covid-19 a profit of $1371 was achieved. RS Elliott Held in Sydney this year, subsidies were smaller and cost recovery better than usual resulting in a small gain of $162 compared to a total cost of around $2900 in 2019 Captains Cash Another good year raising over $1500. I would like to thank the whole committee for their efforts in keeping the Club functioning and providing great venues for members’ enjoyment of our great game. The report/balance sheet was accepted and seconded as follows:

Captains Report (transcript text) Stephen Chan Welcome everyone to this year’s Annual General Meeting and Presentation night for 2020. I can’t believe the year has again gone by so fast. It no doubt has been a very strange year due to Covid but am very happy that our club games were not impacted in a huge way. It was great to see even golf clubs put Covid rules in place so people could continue playing the game. So what happened this year besides Covid….

- We hosted another successful Bank Holiday @ Twin Creeks with almost 70 x players

- We hosted a very successful RS Elliott (on and off the course) this March but more importantly we were very lucky to time it perfectly before Covid took off. It would have been a nightmare if we had to postpone or worst cancel Elliott at such short notice.

Attendance…. For our regular club games, the year’s attendance average has come down a bit to 28….not a huge surprise though…. the highest attendance was 35 at Glenmore and lowest was 23 at Kooindah Waters. This year we had 6 x players again who attended all 13 regular games. They were –

Well done to those players.

Membership…. Our membership numbers are still looking good. We have again been around the 65 mark for some time and we are still seeing a few new members joining though out the year.

Looking forward to next year’s games…. The 2021 schedule hasn’t changed much. The only major change will be the Winter Cup moving to March and being held in Port Stephens area….namely Horizons for the Saturday game for the guys who are making it a weekend and Nelson Bay for the actual Winter Cup. Hopefully we will see a good number of players attending. RS Elliott will not be played in 2021 which is mainly due to Covid and the inability to book anything in advance…. let alone people being allowed to leave their home states. It was just too difficult to book anything earlier this year.

Booking Officer…. Well done to Dave McCann for taking on the Booking Officer role this year. Everyone would agree his done another great job.

Matchplay…. Well matchplay was one of the victims of Covid….it was decided not long after March that it would be better to cancel matchplay for the year. At the time, it was up in the air whether you were going to be able to play golf or not. Victoria had made the call already to ban all golf in their state and we were not sure if NSW would be following. So… qualification for the 2021 matchplay draw (which we will be playing) will be the 2019 winner (Richard Mair) and the top 5 x players (who are yet to qualify) from the Eastlakes, Koohindah Waters & the Mona Vale games this year. The first round will again start at the Glenmore game. The full match play schedule will be noted on the 2021 fixtures list.

Rules On the Rules front, we seemed to go okay with the new rules that came in the year before. The temporary rules that came about from Covid haven’t been too bad…we all seemed to handle these okay Ok…..let’s move on to the Representative events…..

RS Elliott This year’s RS Elliott tournament was hosted in NSW at Ryde-Parramatta on the Monday and Stonecutters on the Tuesday. Monday’s game saw Victoria win the Managing Director’s trophy with 171 points. NSW were next with 163. Other NSW highlights on the day included Simon Cooper winning A grade with 37 points, Richard Mair runner up with 34 points and myself runner up in B grade with 33 points. Tuesday’s game saw NSW win the RS Elliott by a mile with 412 strokes…TAS were a distant second with 459 strokes. The Brisbane Salver was also won by NSW with the best individual player stableford average of 30.84 points calculated over the 2 x days. WA were a close 2nd with 29.55 points. The Melbourne Cup was won again by Simon Cooper with 78 strokes. Well done Scoop. Other NSW highlights on the day were A grade runner up Stephen McCammond with 36 points, B grade winner was myself with 39 points and B grade runner up was Simon Soo with 37 points.

As most people already know the 2021 RS Elliott tournament which was going to be hosted in WA has been cancelled and will recommence in 2022, most likely in WA. The President’s Trophy winner for this year will most likely be an automatic selection for the 2022 Elliott instead.

The Summer Cup The second Summer Cup was held on Sunday 23rd February this year at the Hunter Valley Golf & Country Club again. The winner of the Summer Cup for 2020 was Warren Francis with a gross score of 90 strokes and net 73 strokes. Well done Wazza.

Interbank The 62nd Interbank Tournament was held at Stonecutters Ridge GC this year and was hosted by Westpac. Team CBA won the Interbank Pennant (Scratch Stableford) with a score of 116 points. For the Interbank Trophy (Handicap Stableford), Westpac won the trophy with 318 points. Richard Mair won the Moss Parker trophy (Scratch stableford) again with 36 points. On a sad note and as everyone is aware, the Interbank has been struggling with numbers over the last several years and as a result of this, the Interbank tournament will no longer be played. This event had been going for over 60+ years, so even though it has wound up, it has had a great innings with plenty of history….

Winter Cup The 22st Winter Cup was again held at the Federal Golf club in Canberra but this time in August. The winner of the day was Glen Williamson with a net 73 on a count back. Runner up on the day was Simon Cooper with a net 73. Well done to Glen on winning and another big thankyou to the Winter Cup sponsor Peter Bendeich. As a change, next year’s Winter Cup will held earlier in the year in March at the Nelson Bay GC.

Bank Holiday For the 69th Bank Holiday, the event was held again at Twin Creeks GC. Congratulations to Lloyd Rodger on winning the Welfare/Watson –Mason Cup with 76 strokes. Congratulations also goes to Bruce Clausen who won the Overall Stableford trophy (sponsored by Gateway Bank) with 40 points. Well done Bruce. Overall, it was another successful event and thanks to everyone that helped in making it a great day. Numbers were still good…approximately 65. We’ve been at Twin Creeks for 3 x years now so we will decide at the next committee meeting whether we move courses or stay at Twin Creeks for 2021.

CBA/Westpac Challenge The CBA/Westpac challenge, hosted by CBA this year, was contested again at the Riverside Oaks on the 23Rd Aug and also played on the newer Bungool course. After all 20 matches had been completed and tallied, it was a tied 10 x matches each….so it was down to total stableford aggregate vs total stableford aggregate and Westpac won by one point…you can’t get any closer than that. I think it was 319 to 318 points. Next year’s challenge will be hosted by Westpac and will be played again at Riverside Oaks on Sunday 22nd August 2021.

Sydney V Brisbane – Due to Covid guidelines, the 43rd Sydney vs Brisbane event

was cancelled however it didn’t stop 20 odd guys making their way up north still to play Tuncurry, South West Rocks, Coffs Harbour and Bonville golf courses.

Hole in Ones’ - No hole in one’s this year, so Bruce and I save a few dollars again

on trophies this year.

Club Championships

The club championships were recently conducted over 2 rounds at Penrith GC and Glenmore HV. The Club Championship grades for 2020 were Scratch, 0-13 for A Grade, 14-19 for B Grade & 20+ for C Grade. The champions for 2020 are: - Open /SCR Mark Ward 50 points (20/30 - Trophy) Runner up Stephen McCammond 46 points (25/22) A Grade Steve Wise 67 points (32/35) Runner Up Steve Chan 66 points (34/32) B Grade Terry Hillman 68 points (33/35) Runner Up Dave McCann 66 points (35/31) C Grade Eddy Chan (joint winner) 71 points (35/36) Greg Liversage (joint winner) 71 points (36/35) Pat Walton (joint winner) 71 points (31/40) Congratulations to all of the above.

Match Play Due to Covid, the 29th Match Play was not played this year and will return in 2021.

Long Drive The long drive comp this year has gone to 2 x players with 3 x long drives each. They are Ganesh Ramachandra & Glen Williamson.

Well done to Ganesh & Glen.

Rookie of the Year trophy The 2020 Rookie of the Year trophy goes to Alex MacInnes. Well done to Alex and thankyou to Glen for sponsoring the trophy.

Presidents Trophy Richard has already presented the Presidents Trophy, but a quick run-down on Glen’s performance this year……so to win the Presidents trophy, he won 1 x game, came 3rd in another game and had a further 6 x top 10’s and played very consistently in the other games. A very well deserved winner and (most likely) an automatic selection for the 2022 Elliott team. Well done Glen

RS Elliott Interstate Team As mentioned earlier, the 2021 RS Elliott tournament has been cancelled so there will not be any team selections for this year. In closing, I would also like to again thank all players for their conduct on and off the course during the year, and to all the committee members for their assistance throughout the year. This has been my 12th year as captain and I have again thoroughly enjoyed supporting the club and look forward to serving as Captain again for the 13th year. I hope everyone has a safe and happy Christmas this year, and all the best for 2021. Steve Chan Captain

Constitution and Bi laws – Glen Williamson

Over the last 2 years, the current committee have been attempting to obtain the club Constitution and Bi Laws for the club, however due to the fluid nature of the committee over the years, up to date documents were not easily (or at all) located. Glen Williamson accepted the task of creating a new Constitution and Bi Laws, using old documentation and taking input from committee (sitting and past) as well as older club members. The Constitution represents the fundamentals of the club, the way we operate holding us all to account with clear definitions, rules and regulations. It must be ratified at the AGM. There has not been a great deal of member feedback from the recently released draft, so that version was presented to the 2020 AGM as final and ratified by the attendees. It will be included on the club web site. Two changes of note with this Constitution were presented:

Abolition of the Vice President role/title, as no specific duties were defined, other than back up the President. We find the committee in general take ownership of actions when the President is not available. The general Committee was increased by one to ensure numbers stay static.

A disciplinary definition has been defined, to align with the new Elliott Selection criteria, where selection may be affected by individual’s behaviour and /or actions.

Bi Laws have not been presented, as these are flexible statements and can be easily defined and changed by the current standing committee during the year. We envisage the 2021 Committee will present a version next year. The committee wish to acknowledge Glen for his persistence in creating this document.

Election of the 2021 Committee CBA SCG Secretary Covid resulted in all meetings being facilitated by phone conference.

Special mention for members that attended all scheduled meetings, showing great support for their club roles throughout 2020 i.e. Steven Chan, George Emerson, Stephen McCammond, Graham Flanagan and Terry Hillman.

The 2020 Committee was dissolved and the following committee elected: President – Richard Mair Vice President – Position abolished in 2020 - Constitution/Bi Laws Captain – Steven Chan Secretary – Craig Horley Treasurer – George Emerson Handicapper – Stephen McCammond Booking Officer – Graham Flanagan (see note below)

General Committee – G Williamson, David McCann, Dom Khoury, Warren Francis, Michael Vickers.

Note : The Booking Officer role is shared with Peter Bendeich for operational purposes, PB does not hold a committee position in 2020.

Election of Patron Richard Mair, President (re-elected) thanked Peter Bendeich for his continued support and effort in this Patron role during 2020 and nominated him for 2021.

Nominated – Richard Mair Seconded – Resounding approval from the AGM attendees.

Peter made a short acceptance speech thanking the club for again considering and offering him the privilege of continuing as Club Patron.

He loves the club, is part of his DNA and looking forward to 2021, in particular his special event, The Winter Cup, invigorated by a new time and location in 2021.

General Business

#1 – Steven Chan – Elliott Selection Criteria Proposal

The Club Captain tabled the new enhanced Elliott Selection Criteria , which has come about as a result of concerns raised through membership this year. It has been the subject to much discussion at committee meetings during 2020. Transparency, with member understanding how to work towards representation selection, providing guidelines for replacements was the overriding goal for this proposal. The committee created 8 different selection proposals, reviewing and enhancing to arrive with the best of the best. It meets our criteria of transparency, equal opportunity for all members, as well as discretion to reward hard working members who serve the club well over the year. As this affects all members, we allowed the members not attending the AGM to support (or not) the proposal as presented. Peter Cassin stressed this was fine as long as it provided the team with the strongest ability to win the representative events. The committee believe selection based on winners of the year’s events, using the President Trophy Order of Merit in case of inability to attend, meets both the best players available criteria as well as consistent club players. Greg Liversage raised an issue on 5 Presidents Trophy events as a qualifying criteria. The committee understood his comments, however wished to place that on hold as we move through 2021 and see how the selection criteria deploys. It can always be altered at the 2021 AGM if eligibility based on number of games is seen to be an issue, however we are using the existing criteria for Championship participation and feel that will be adequate (for the moment). The club has 66 Financial Members in 2020.

19 AGM Attendees supported the proposal. 25 members who provided an Apology supported the proposal. 14 member who provided Apologies declined to comment. 8 members did not respond to the AGM invitation. 0 members were against the proposal.

The 2020 AGM ratified the Elliott Selection Criteria proposal with 66% support of all Financial Members.

#2 – David McCann - 2021 Schedule of Events

The 2021 Schedule of events has been released. Another comprehensive range of course and locations, which will test the ability and perseverance of members, providing much golfing enjoyment along the way. The major change in 2020 is the movement of the Winter Cup to earlier in the year at a new location, reinvigorating this Patron supported event. The 2022 booking process is well underway, and the Booking Officer reporting it is more of a challenge than in the past to arrange playing schedules due to clubs changing attitudes. We, as a members, need to support all our events so the clubs see value in having the CBA SCG at their course. The committee commend David McCann for his work as Booking Officer, a thankless job, over his period in the role. Especially for 2020 where he had stood down, but events required him to change that decision and complete another year in the role.

#3 –Steven Chan – Rising Game Costs i.e. Long Reef & Mona Vale

The Club Captain raised the cost of some of our courses, specifically Long Reef and Mona Vale, now becoming our most expensive games on the schedule. Attendees felt the cost was reasonable, with Bruce Clausen commenting “In 2020 Long Reef was presented in the best condition it has been in for quite some time”. David McCann highlighted that the overall average cost of games was $50 for the year, so spread across our year’s events is still quite reasonable overall. Michael Parker commented as the schedule is spread regionally across Sydney, there is wins and losses for travel of members, so we all do share the cost over the entire schedule in one way or another. George Emerson looked at average players per game, which is around 30, even at these events, does show members do support our entire playing schedule. Steven Chan commented we do have a core supporting group of players for all events, as can be seen via the Presidents Trophy results.

Appendix 3 - 2021 schedule of games.

Page 13: (Life Member & Patron) (Life Member) (2020 Life Member ...

Page | 13

Greg Liversage suggested that the levy for trophies on each course could be reviewed to lessen the cost at some of these higher valued courses. Perhaps only minimal additions in these cases. Michael Parker commented that the committee has good judgement and will accept their decision on costs. The meeting agreed to continue at these courses and keep an eye on costs overall.

#4 – Peter Bendeich – Nomination of Steven Chan as Life Member of CBA SCG.

Peter Bendeich, as a general business item, raised the fact that the last Life Member elected was over 7 years ago, and it was time to recognise the efforts and support of one individual who has gone over and above for the CBA SCG for many years.

This member joined the CBA SCG in 1997. He was A Grade Champion in 2008 and 2019. A member of the Elliott representative team 11 times since 2001. Consistency and clubman ship is shown by President Trophy top 10

finishes 10 times, winning in 2001. Developed and maintains the club web site. Organiser of many of the club events such as Elliott, Bank Holiday,

Westpac Challenge, previous Interbank. Club Captain from 2009 consistently through to again in 2021 (13 years) Collation and Presentation at every club event through the year,

including commentary on the weather. Always has time to listen to concerns and/or help out members. Individually sponsored a trophy at Bank Holiday for many years The club is in his DNA Organises trips and games such as Newcastle vs NSW, Elliott After Tour

very efficiently and professionally.

Peter nominated Steven ‘Tiger’ Chan for Life Membership and was ably seconded by Stephen McCammond who echoed all the previous points. The AGM unanimously accepted the proposal. Steven ‘Tiger’ Chan was elected and endorsed as the 16th Life Member of the CBA Sydney Golf Club. Steven ‘Tiger’ Chan (newly elected Life Member!) thanked Peter and Stephen for their nomination and was honoured to be included within the esteemed list of the Life Member’s.

Page 14: (Life Member & Patron) (Life Member) (2020 Life Member ...

Page | 14

He indicated he looks up to many members and has greatly enjoyed his tenue as Club Captain. This club is in fact part of his DNA, and feels if he was not a member it would be like losing and arm or a leg. The CBA Sydney club has helped him navigate a tough few years, always there, ready to support. He appreciate the club, the members and the camaraderie. He accepted the nomination with gratitude and humility, and looks forward to the clubs future years in this changing world.

Meeting Closed by Craig Horley @ 7:40PM Date of the next Committee Meeting – To be defined by the new 2021 Committee
