At times they may be hard to find, but half the fun is discovering them. Enjoy a bite to eat in a one-of-a-kind setting; Degraves Street is famous for its sidewalk cafés and quality coffee. The newly opened Shebeen, in Manchester Lane, ups the ante on unique, as the first non-for-profit bar in Australia with all profits going to the developing world – so enjoy a drink and make a difference. > shebeen.com.au

It can be seen displayed on the sides of buildings and light posts; it is this urban street art that enlivens the capital. Hosier Lane is the most publicised and arguably most impressive of these laneways. Be immersed in the vibrant patterns that literally cover every surface, or ponder the series of illuminated light boxes as part of the City Lights Projects. > citylightsprojects.com
Laneway EdgeFrom vintage gems to new designer, immerse yourself in Melbourne’s maze of laneways. Explore Russell Place, Flinders Lane and Crossley Street, home to a treasure trove of eclectic boutiques which allow you to find everything you never knew you were looking for.
