MEDIA RELEASE Heritage Group Expands Boundaries as Melbourne’s Development Pressure Rises Dozens of unprotected buildings on city’s fringes gain a defender MELBOURNE. AUGUST 6, 2015. Activist group Melbourne Heritage Action (MHA) today announced an expansion of its boundaries in response to Melbourne’s currently unprecedented wave of development. “The current rate and scale of change has seen development pressure on heritage increasingly spilling over from its historic CBD focus into the CBD fringe areas in Southbank, Docklands, the CBD North development corridor and East Melbourne.” MHA President Tristan Davies said today. “Melbourne Heritage Action is moving to meet this challenge by expanding its areas of coverage accordingly. “Dozens of buildings in these areas, many of them under direct development threat, have overnight gained a new defender.” Examples include the three remaining Castlemaine Brewery buildings at 117-133 Queensbridge St., Southbank, which presently have no heritage overlay, although all are recognised as of A-grade significance (see Appendix B). Further examples of similar sites, with supporting print-ready photographs are also available from MHA. “Melbourne Heritage Action will now advocate to see these buildings and dozens of others like them of value to Melbourne’s famous heritage protected from the threat of rampant development in their neighbourhoods,” said Davies. The group’s new boundary is expanded from the CBD Hoddle grid to newly cover Southbank up to the West Gate Freeway, all of Docklands and West Melbourne to the northern end of the Flagstaff Gardens, the CBD North development corridor to Grattan street,

MELBOURNE.

“Dozens of buildings in these areas, many of them under direct development threat, have overnight gained a new defender.”

Examples include the three remaining Castlemaine Brewery buildings at 117-133 Queensbridge St., Southbank, which presently have no heritage overlay, although all are recognised as of A-grade significance (see Appendix B).

The group’s new boundary is expanded from the CBD Hoddle grid to newly cover Southbank up to the West Gate Freeway, all of Docklands and West Melbourne to the northern end of the Flagstaff Gardens, the CBD North development corridor to Grattan street, areas around the Haymarket roundabout at Flemington Rd, the Royal Exhibition Building/Carlton Gardens and East Melbourne around the Parliamentary precinct.

A detailed map showing the group’s new boundary is given in Appendix A below.

MHA representatives are available for commentary. Print-resolution versions of images in the Appendices are available on application.
