BACKGROUND:
Meira Foods was established in the year 2004 in the month of January. Under the
sponsorship of Small Industries Services Institute (SISI), now called MSME-Development Institute,
a month long training was organized with ACT-M, on fruits & vegetable Processing and
Preservation at Bamon Leikai . About 30 young women from different parts of Imphal , Thoubal
and Bishnupur got training. My (Proprietor H. Shubhra Devi) desire of doing something productive
clicked with the idea of starting a “Food Processing Unit.” May be because of my background (M.
Sc Food & Nutrition) and influenced by the training, I started the production only with three ex-
trainees. We didn’t have proper space for production, so I used my kitchen after I finished my
morning meal. Slowly when our production and demand increase, we employed more number of
staffs. Space was not enough so I requested our family members to allow me to use the Mandop
built by my father-in-law. It was kutcha and without any wall. Step by step, from our earning, we
repaired the Mandop and cemented its floor and later we put up the wall. In the year 2010 we
built another unit at Keishamthong Elangbam leikai. Now we have 50 workers, 7 Managerial staffs,
and 2 drivers.

FINANCIAL STATUS:
We started Meira Foods from ‘0’ (zero) investment. Whatever we had at our kitchen, we
used, try & produced. Whatever was marketable we sell it out, others we just consumed & gave it
for trial. Out of our earning we invested and expanded. In the year 2004 – 2005 our turn over was
just Rs. 30,000 (thirty thousand), during 2005 – 2006, it was Rs. 1 lakh. We continued to expand
and in the year 2012 -2013, our turnover was 75 lakhs. Now our turnover have crossed 1 core.
If you ask how much you invested to start up your business or how much you earn? I have
a very simple answer that whatever we earn we invest and our machinery, stocks and our trained
dedicated staffs are our assets.
Till date we have taken only Rs. 2 lakhs loan from SIDBI for purchasing one packaging
machinery for which I had to spend another 2 lakhs of rupees to make it functional, (printing the
packaging material). I’m little hesitant to take loan or approach bank, because of their
unwelcoming attitude for women entrepreneur, and their laborious paper work. Sometimes I feel
that, if I could grow without the help of bank, we will grow further.
Today “Meira Foods” is successful because of people’s love, believe and support. Thanks
to Kangla Foods production’s Mr. Biren for his marketing support, Tamo Tonjao for all his Technical
support, all my friends and well-wishers for their love and support, and people of Manipur who
are here, studying and working in different parts of the country and abroad who are my real
customers, who continue to ask for our products. We in Meira Foods, will never disappoint you.
We’ll keep your expectation. Your suggestion is our inspiration, guide us for our better future.
I’m blessed with many good people around who have help me unconditionally.
Here, I have an appeal to bank official present here. Please don’t underestimate small industries
like mine. It has great potential. It is giving employment to thousands of women right now. It has
a potential of giving employment to lakhs of young energetic people.
I want more women friendly banks. I heard of loan without any collateral security for
women but I found that it is not practically happening. You may ask for land. Most of the women
don’t have land in their name. land is either in their father’s name or in husband’s name.
Respected bank official, please pay a visit to these unit, if you see any potential in there, please
extend your support. We, small unit like us, run by women can also be your profitable partner. We
may do small way but in safer way. We will never disappoint you.
May I also appeal to officials of Commerce & Industry Department. Sir, most of the
enterprises are run here by limited number of staff, they have limited time to run around the
offices. May I request officials of the department to please do visit to these registered industries,
under you who are sincerely working, see their potential, observe their requirement and guide
them to expand their business.

Women entrepreneur have dual responsibility. Their responsibility at home as mother &
wife and at work they are the leader. It is not an easy task to adjust these responsibility, but still
we are working, contributing and taking responsibility to take forward the state economy.
Having mentioned all the details, recently I have received amount of Rs. 10 lakhs cash
credited from Mudra Bank through UBI, Imphal branch. I hope to continue the good work and
cherish the faith that our consumers have in MEIRA.
