ShewasonherProfessionalInternshipplacementintheEmergencyDepartmentatYorkHospitalwhenshewasnominatedwithcolleagueFrancesOxtobyforanawardbythefamilyofapatientwhowasdying.
TheStarAwardisYorkTeachingHospitalNHSFoundationTrust’smonthlystaffrecognitionaward.Itrecognisesandrewardsstaffandvolunteerswhohavemadeadifferencebydoingsomethingextraintheireverydayworkforthesakeofpatients,visitorsorcolleagues.Itisrareforastudenttoreceiveanawardsuchasthis.
Thecitationsaid:“Itisclearlyverytraumatictobewithsomeonewhiletheypassaway,andespeciallywhenitisoneyoulove.Theytreateduswithgreatrespectanddignity,astheyalsodidourmum,allowingustodoourbesttomakeherpassinglessfrighteningforher.Ofcourseitcouldneverhavebeenagoodexperience,buttheymadewhatwasoneoftheworstdaysofourlivesmoretolerable.Theycouldhavejustdonetheirjobandtendedtomum,leavingusoutonalimb.Insteadtheycopedwiththesituationandlookedafterustoo.Whatimpressedmemostwasthematurityandrespectthesetwoyoungwomenshowed.Manywouldhavefounditeasiertofadeintothebackground.Wecan’tthankthemenough.”
Charlotte,26,whooriginallyjoinedHealthSciencesonourextendeddegreeprogrammeandwasthefirstinherfamilytogotouniversity,hasmadeexcellentprogressandisnowinthefinalyearofanMNursingdegree.Shesaid:“Ididn’tthinkI’ddonemorethanIshouldhave,butthefamilynominatedmefortheawardandIwasdelightedtoreceiveitwithFrances.
“Itwasareallydifficultday.WhenthereisadeathonthewardsyousometimesexpectitbutinA&Ewedoeverythingtosavealife,sowhensomethinglikethishappensit’sdifficult.AfterthatIhadanewbornchildtolookafter,soitwaspolaropposites.Ifeltprivilegedtobewiththefamilyatthistime.Itonlytakesoneperson,alookoragesture,tomakeitabadexperiencesoI’mgladwewereabletohelpinsomeway.”

Lecturers present at conference
MikeParkerandDeviNannen,bothlecturersfromtheAcuteandCriticalCareTeachingandScholarshipGroup,presentedattheNETConferenceatCambridgeUniversitylastmonth.Theirpresentationentitled“Thedevelopmentofassertionreasonquestions(ARQ)fortheassessmentofgraduateentrynurses”wasverywellreceivedandencouragedalotofdebatearoundtheassessmentpractices.
Clinical skills meeting held in CSUTheDepartmentwaspleasedtohostthesummermeetingoftheYorkshireandHumbersideClinicalSkillsandSimulationnetwork(YHCSSN)initsClinicalSimulationUnit.
Thegroupaimstosharegoodpracticeandspecialistexpertise,andnetworkwithothereducatorsregionally.ItmeetsfourtimesayearandDavidGraham,lecturerinadultnursing,said:“Iwasreallydelightedthatwehadtheopportunitytohosttheeventandhighlightsomeoftheexcellentsimulationworkwedowithournursingandmidwiferystudents.”
AngelaHope,ChairoftheYHCSSN,said:“ItisreallygoodtowelcomeYorkintothenetworkprogrammeandDavidontothesteeringgroup.Thenetworkisaboutsharingandbringingmultiskilledprofessionalstogether.YorkputtogetheranexcellentprogrammeforthedayandIwasdelightedwiththeturnout”.
ThegroupheardabouthowtheDepartmentofHealthSciencescurrentlyusessimulationinitsnursing,midwiferyandhealthprofessionaleducationprogrammesandaboutinnovativeplanstodeveloptheuseofsimulationinthefuture.

INEBRIAisWorldHealthOrganisation(WHO)sponsoredandistheleadingforumgloballyforthesharingofresearchadvancesrelevanttoscreeningandbriefinterventionsforalcoholandotherdrugs.Noreenpresented“Attitudesandperceptionsoncommunitypharmacy(CP)-basedalcoholinterventions:ascopingreview”.Paulpresented“asystematicreviewofalcoholscreeningandassessmentmeasuresforyoungpeople.”

Department hosts the Legacy of Thalidomide seminar
Inthelate1950sandearly1960sthedrugThalidomidewasgiventothousandsofpregnantwomenacrosstheworldtorelievemorningsickness.Thedrugcausedseverebirthdefectsincludingmissingorshortlimbsandsensoryimpairments.Thalidomideisoftenseenasahistoricaltragedybutitisverymuchacontemporarydisabilityissue.IntheUKtherearestill466peoplelivingwiththeconsequencesofthedamagethedrugcausedandincountriessuchasBrazil,thedrugcontinuestocausebirthdefects.
TheLegacyofThalidomideseminarbroughttogetherThalidomidesurvivors,historians,biologists,doctorsandhealthsciences’researcherstoconsiderwhatwecanlearnfromboththehistoryofthedruganditsuseandimpacttoday.DrRuthBluefromtheThalidomideSocietyandtheWellcomeLibrarydescribedthewealthofmaterialavailableintheWellcomeThalidomidearchive,andDrJulieParle(Honorary)AssociateProfessorinHistoryfromtheUniversityofKwaZulu-Natal,SouthAfrica,talkedaboutthemurkyhistoryofthedruginsouthernAfrica.AlexMedcalf,fromtheCentreforGlobalHealthHistories,talkedabouttheuseofhistoricphotographsinconstructinghealthhistories.
DrNeilVargesson,SeniorLecturerfromtheUniversityofAberdeen,explainedhowthedrugactstocausebirthdefectsanddescribedtheworkhisteamisundertakingtofindasafealternativetoThalidomide.DrShadiGhassemiJahani,ConsultantOrthopaedicSurgeonandPhDStudentfromtheUniversityofGothenburg,andLizNewbronner,PhDstudentfromtheDepartmentofHealthSciences,thendiscussedtheirresearchintothehealthproblemsbeingexperiencedbyThalidomidesurvivorsinSwedenandtheUK.
ThedaywaschairedbyHeadofDepartment,ProfessorKarlAtkin,andclosedwiththreeThalidomidesurvivors,GeoffAdams-Spink,RowlandBarehamandCraigMillward,givingtheirpersonalreflectionsonthelegacyofthedrug.

Calls for greater transparency in the release of clinical trial data
Researchershavecalledforgreatertransparencyinthepublicreleaseofclinicaltrialdataafterastudyrevealedsignificantunder-reportingofsideeffectsinmedicaltreatments.
Thestudy,ledbyDrSueGolder,aresearcherintheDepartmentofHealthSciences,revealedthatthemedicalbenefitsareroutinelyreported,whilethesideeffectsareincompletelydocumentedinpeer-reviewedjournalarticles.
Theclinicalbenefitsofnewdrugsareusuallytestedinrandomisedclinicaltrials,inwhichpatientsarerandomlyassignedtoreceivedrugorplacebo,beforedrugscanbeprescribedwidely.
Adverseevents,orsideeffects,arealsoroutinelycollectedinsuchtrials,andshouldbereportedinscientificjournalarticlestogiveaclearpictureofthebenefitsandrisksofnewtreatments.
Thestudy,publishedinPLOSMedicine,foundthat64%ofsideeffectswouldhavebeenmissedbyreaderslookingonlyatpublishedreportsaboutthemedicaltreatmentsstudied.
Theauthorsconcludethatfullreportingofadverseeventsisessentialtoallowpatientsanddoctorstoassessthebalancebetweenbenefitsandsideeffectsofmedicaltreatments.

Drugs fatalities overtake car fatalities for the first time
NewfiguresfromtheOfficeforNationalStatistics(ONS)showthatmorepeoplediefromadrugoverdosethanfromroadtrafficaccidents.
IanHamilton,lecturerinMentalHealth,writesforTheConversationontheriseindeathsfromdrugsintheUK.SevenyearsagofatalitiesfromopiatesovertookfatalitiesduetoroadaccidentsintheUS.NowthelatestfiguresfromtheONSshowthatlastyear1,732peoplediedintrafficaccidentscomparedwith1,989whodiedduetoopiatesinEnglandalone.

Cancer pain toolkit wins award
AtoolkitabouttacklingcancerpainwashighlycommendedattheBMAPatientInformationAwardsinLondon.
Theresource‘TacklingCancerPain:AtoolkitforPatientsandFamilies’wasdevelopedaspartofafive-yearNIHRProgramGrantcalledIMPACCT–ImprovingtheManagementofAdvancedCancerPainintheCommunity.Itprovidesevidencebasedinformationandpracticaladviceforpatientsandtheirfamiliesaboutself-managementofadvancedcancerpain.
SeniorlecturerattheDepartmentofHealthSciencesKateFlemmingwaspartofateamfromtheUniversityofLeeds,ledbyProfMikeBennett,towintheaward(picturedabove).OthersincludedDrNicHughes,SeniorResearchFellowinPalliativeCare,ProfJoseCloss,ProfessorofNursing,bothUniversityofLeeds,ChristineAllmark,PatientrepresentativeandDavidFelber,LeedsMediaServices.
Katesaid:“TacklingCancerPainisaneducationalresourcethatwasdevelopedasaresultofanextensiveprocessofliteraturereviewing,userinvolvement,andproducedwiththeinputofprofessionalfilm-makersanddesigners.BeingHighlyCommendedisfantasticrecognitionforthewholeteamwhocontributedtoitsdevelopment.”
Thereviewersaid:“Theresourceisofanexceptionallyhighstandard;theamountofeffortthatwentintoproducingandreviewingitisclear.It’sverywellpresentedandcontainsalargeamountofhelpfulinformationinaclearandeasytoreadway.Thisreallyisanexcellentresource.”
TheBMAPatientInformationAwardsaimtosupportandencouragepatient-centeredcareinmeetingtheneedsofpatientsthroughtheproductionanddisseminationofaccessible,well-designedandclinicallybalancedinformationwhichwillpromotebothgreaterawarenessandunderstandingofhealthmattersandpatientchoice.

No clear threshold to treat diabetes during pregnancy
AnewstudyconductedbyresearchersattheUniversitiesofYorkandBristol,andtheNHSBradfordInstituteforHealthResearch,showsthereisanurgentneedtofindthebestthresholdtobalancethepotentialbenefitsandharmsofdiabetestreatmentduringpregnancy.
PublishedbyTheBMJ,thestudyfindsaconsistentassociationbetweenhigherbloodglucose(sugar)levelsduringpregnancyandincreasedriskofcomplicationsaroundthetimeofbirth,butthereisnoclearthresholdofwhentointervenewithtreatment.
Researcherssaythereisnowanurgentneedtoworkoutthebestthresholdtobalancethebenefitsandharmsoftreatingwomenwithhighbloodglucoselevelsduringpregnancy.
Gestationaldiabetes-highbloodglucose(sugar)levelsduringpregnancy-isassociatedwithincreasedriskofarangeofadverseoutcomesaroundthetimeofbirthandcanaffectthelongertermhealthofmotherandinfant.
Althoughtreatmentcanreducetheriskoftheseoutcomes,theoptimalglucosethresholdtodefinegestationaldiabetesisunknown.

Early Career Researcher workshop
On13September,85EarlyCareerResearchers(ECRs)from24universitiesacrosstheBritishIslesattendedafreeworkshop,hostedbytheDepartmentofHealthSciencesandfundedbytheSocietyforSocialMedicine(SSM)andtheWellcomeTrust.Theevent,whichprecededtheSSMAnnualScientificMeeting(14-16September),tookplaceatJamesHallandwasorganisedbyNoortjeUphoffandKateBosanquetalongwithothermembersoftheSSMECRsubcommittee.
Theworkshop,‘Fundingsourcesandsuccessfulgrantwriting’,focusedonapplyingforfellowshipsandovercomingchallengesinobtainingresearchgrants.SpeakersincludedProfessorAileenClarke(PresidentoftheSSM),ProfessorTrevorSheldon,ProfessorYvonneBirksandRosieMcEachan(programmemanager,BiB).Theydrewonpersonalexperiencesofsecuringfundingandoffereduniqueinsightsintowhatisrequiredtosucceed.
Laterinthedayapanelquestion-and-answersessionwasexpertlychairedbyProfessorJimMcCambridge.ThiswasfollowedbyaninteractivesessionwheredelegatesformedgroupsfacilitatedbymembersofboththeECRsubcommitteeandSSMcommitteetopractiseconstructinganddeliveringafiveminuteproposalfromaresearchbrief.
Thedayfinishedwithoptionalactivities–acomplimentaryyogasessiondeliveredbyDrSadieBoniface(ECRsubcommittee)andascenicwalkintoYorkviaFulfordstrayandalongtheriver.Intheeveningmorethan50delegatesattendedamealatCosmorestaurant.
Theworkshopreceivedverypositivefeedbackfromtheonlineevaluation,completedby80%ofdelegates,whichshowed88%believedithadbeen‘veryuseful’or‘quiteuseful’.Nextyear’sECRworkshopwilltakeplaceattheUniversityofManchesteron5September2017.

Theawardintheneurology,mentalhealthanddementiacategoryrecognisesanindividualorgroupofresearcherswhohavepublishedanexceptionalpieceofresearchrelatingtogeneralpracticeorprimarycare.
DrCoventryisaSeniorLecturerinHealthServicesResearchandmemberoftheDepartmentofHealthSciences’MentalHealthandAddictionresearchgroupandtheCentreforReviewsandDissemination.
Hisstudyentitled:‘Managingdepressioninpeoplewithmultimorbidity:aqualitativeevaluationofanintegratedcollaborativecaremodel’,waspublishedinthejournalBMCFamilyPracticeandexploreswhetheranenhancedmodelofcollaborativecarecanpotentiallyachieve‘joined-up’careintheNHSbysupportinghealthprofessionalstotreatbothmentalandphysicalhealthtogether.
Findingsreportedinthepapershowedthatcollaborativecarecanbringaboutmorecoordinatedcarebutpatientsdidn’tnecessarily
endorsetheideathattherapieshadtobedeliveredinanintegratedway.Insteadtheyoftenpreferredtodiscussmentalhealthinaprotectedandseparatespaceawayfromroutinemanagementoflongtermconditions.Thisworkunderlinestheimportanceofserviceuserexperienceindevelopingservicesthatseektointegratephysicalandmentalhealthcare.

More Americans are using cannabis - and view it as harmless
InanarticlewrittenforTheConversationwebsite,IanHamilton,alecturerinMentalHealthintheDepartmentofHealthSciences,notesthatastheUShasincreasinglyadoptedamoreliberalpolicyapproachtocannabis,therehasbeenanincreasinguseofthedrug.Meanwhile,theUKhascontinuedtoprohibitcannabisuse-withthegovernmentclaimingthatfallinguseofthedruginthepopulationjustifiesitspolicyposition.
Ianconcludesthatbothcountriesareparticipatinginapolicyexperimentontheirpopulations.Unfortunately,neithercountryiscollectingsufficientlydetaileddatatobeabletodrawanyreliableconclusions.Bothstillhavetheopportunitytorectifythis.

Randomised Controlled Trials in the Social Sciences conference

PROFHER long term follow-up completed and featured as the exemplar surgical trial in a users’ guide to the medical literatureYorkTrialsUnitcollaboratedonaresearchprojectfundedbytheNationalInstituteforHealthResearch,HealthTechnologyAssessmentProgramme.ThiswascalledthePROFHERTrialwhichcomparedsurgeryversusnotsurgeryforfracturesoftheupperarmbonewhichaccountfor5%to6%ofalladultfractures.Thetrialof250patientsfoundthatsurgerywasnotbetterthanslingtreatmentinimprovingpatients’shoulderpainandfunctionovertwoyears.InAugust,theycompletedtheanalysesoffollowing-uppatientsoverthree,fourandfiveyearsandfoundthatthemainfindingsofthetrialpersistinthelongterm.ThePROFHERTrialTeamisnowundertakingasurveyofwhethertheresultsofthetrialhaveaffectedorthopaedicsurgeons’decision-makingandhavereceivedwellover200responses.

Matthewundertookthewalkinmemoryofhisfather-in-Law(Peter)onSaturday8October2016inSouthShields.
Matthewsaid:“Peterwasdiagnosedatsuchayoungageandhisdementiaprogressedrapidly.Aftertheinitaldiagnosis,ourfamily,includingPeter,experiencedmanyemotions,fromdenial,tosadness,toangerandfinallyreluctantacceptance.WeknewwithAlzheimer’sdiseasethatPeterwouldlosehismemory,butwedidn’t
understandhowdevastatingitwasuntilweexperienceditfirst-hand.ThisiswhyIandotherfriendscompletedthewalkinaidofthiswonderfulworthwhilecharity”.Agrandtotalof£590wasraised.Thankstoallthosewhokindlyandsogenerouslydonated.”
