KESSLER PARKKANSAS CITY, MISSOURIFALL 2014 - SPRING 2015 KCDC GROUP PROJECT

One of the most iconic elements in the parks and boulevards system, Kessler Park is a dening urban element. Its unique topography and connection to the city gives a sense of character to the entire Northeast Neighborhood. In spite of this the park is not currently well integrated to either the parks and boulevard system or the neighborhood.

KEY OBJECTIVES:1. Integrate Kessler Park into the greater context of Kansas City as a destination and dening urban element.2. Dene Kessler Park as a neighborhood amenity for the Northeast.3. Create a relationship between the original design intentions and the existing conditions to create an identity for Kessler Park.

Kessler Park is a key piece in the defining Parks and Boulevard System in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1893, George Kessler was commissioned to design a system that optimized undevelopable land into lush parks that were connected with a series of landscaped boulevards that would put Kansas City

on the map as a staple in the City Beautiful movement. Since its emergence, Kessler Park has expanded across the Northern edge of Kansas City to span the natural limestone cliff and rugged terrain.

Other anchor parks have developed a sense of identity through providing unique amenities that serve the city and neighborhoods around them. Being aware of the other parks and what they offer allows for the design of Kessler Park to serve as neighborhood amenity, Kansas City designation and to push the Parks and Boulevards System forward.

    DEMOGRAPHICS

The Northeast currently has a challenging reputation. It has historically been praised for its unique diversity and trend to be a melting pot and home for new immigrants in Kansas City. To understand the park users the Demographics of the Northeast was analyzed. A cross reference off all defining factors was created to conclude that the Northeast is diverse in all ways.

Located adjacent to Independence Ave., a major commerce thoroughfare in the Northeast, Kessler Park has a direct connection to many amenities that can engage in the park within walking distance. The East Bottoms supply the same opportunity with direct connection to major traffic byways and public transportation.

  • 13

The park was divided into zones based off of the urban edge, topography, visual connectivity and tree cover. These zones were further analyzed and became the key elements to the Kessler Park Vision Plan.

Through physical and analytical studies of Kessler Park the edge of the Park was studied. It was discovered that the park and city bleed together since there is no clear edge. This lead to the development of the Zipper. The zipper is a complete street for pedestrian and vehicle traffic that defines the edge where the park and city meet. The zipper also connects all zones of the park. Its formation also allows for the closure of cliff drive to vehicular traffic. In order to connect the park to Independence Avenue, the feeder streets were treated similarly to the zipper.

George Kesslers vision for the park was to be maintained as a rugged, however near the edge there may be considerable fine embellishments. The master plan incorporated layers of intervention to respect Kesslers Vision. The designed zones are located near the edge of the park, while the wild core of Kessler Park was lightly designed to respect its unique picturesque nature.

    WESTERN GATE

The Paseo and Independence Avenue intersection acts as an urban node for the area. The impending context changes, such as the demolition of the Chouteau court apartments and potential for the relocation of the I-29 off/on ramps aid in creating a new gateway into the northeast and Kessler Park .

  • 18

The reservoir zone serves as a central location where all park activities can meet and disperse. It provides access to the pedestrian bridge and sets up context for this semesters re-purposing of the water reservoir.

    THE RESERVOIR

  • 19

Chestnut currently bisects the park and connects Independence Avenue to the East Bottoms. With the vision plan it has the opportunity to connect the park through active trails and visual connections. Chestnut is a key element to combat erosion and implement water management for Kessler Park.

The Formal gate is the only formal connection between the park and city. The design establishes its prominence as a formal urban space with an open plaza and park. By eliminating traffic of Bellefontaine Avenue, St. John Avenue, and Gladstone Boulvard the formal gate becomes safe for the pedestrian.

    THE FORMAL GATE

With a strong presence to the Kansas City museum and spectacular view, scarrit point connects with neighborhood associations by providing a community amphitheater and viewing tower that also connects to the pedestrian bridge.

The reservoir that is located in Kessler Park currently sits abandoned atop the highest point of the park. The reservoir was built in 1921 and provided water to the industrial east bottoms for machinery and fire hydrants. Shortly after it was built, the 16 million gallons of water proved to much for the infrastructure and the reservoir was drained. The reservoir has been empty and abandoned since 1931 but still has a strong

presence in the a strong relationship with the park users. The reservoir has transformed over time with layers of graffiti, natural growth and has developed its own identity. The re-purposing design of the reservoir is focused on preserving the reservoirs Identity, infrastructure and presence while allowing it to be used by many

    WHOLEBODY CENTERKANSAS CITY, MISSOURISUMMER 2013

Every area of Kansas City is dened by the buildings that are within it. Downtown has the Power and Light building and Sprint Center, between downtown and the crossroads is the Kauffman Center. Then further south is Union Station and the Liberty Memorial. The crossroads district is lacking in buildings that stand out and dene it from a distanace. Most of the buildings in this area are old manufacturing buildings that have been converted into other uses, such as lofts and retail shops. Since they have been converted from another use, they all look very similar. This makes trying to nd a certain building difcult. With the wholeBODY Center that is not the case. It was designed to stand out against the old brick buildings. This also allows the building to act as signage and draw more people in.

When you walk in the entry you can immediatly see many of the spaces throughout

the building including the walk ways across the attrium. They are widened from a normal walk way to allow for people to stop and watch people climb the rock wall. Since both the north and west facades are primarily glazing there is a strong connection to the exterior as well.

The water is collected from both the drains on the curved roof and flat roof. It then flows to the water storage tank on the fourth floor. This allows this process to not only be benecial to the building, but also create a learning experience for the community.

A vacation house for a couple on a secluded island off the coast of Washington state. The design suggests movement through architectural articulation on a narrow site. The structure consists of wood columns along the South side and a concrete bearing wall, which wraps into the roof, along the North. The structure emphasizes the directionality of views towards the water. Through the site there is a movement from private to semi-public. This is articulated through the amount of enclosure for each space. The private space consists of the bedroom and back patio. These two spaces have horizontal wood slats and minimal windows. In contrast, the kitchen and living room are completely open both to each other and the views.

    KANSAS CITY, MISSOURIFALL 2011

Designed as a grand entrance to Southmoreland Park. Inspiration is derived from two main sources: the allowance of daylight deep into interior spaces and the creation of a beacon as an entrance to the park. Since it

is built into a hill, the lower floor of the building is constructed out of concrete bearing walls. The metal columns from the upper floor then run down through the center. As the building rises out

of the ground, the concrete structure disappears and the metal columns are visible. The columns then transform into the support for the roof.

A box for a butterfly to be held in for short periods of time while being transported around Powell Gardens. It was inspired by the shape and movement of a butterfly.
