The purpose of this meeting was to provide an opportunity for the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), industry representatives and the public to discuss with NRC staff the draft Branch Technical Position (BTP) on the Import of Non-U.S.-Origin Radioactive Sources. The draft BTP, published in the Federal Register, for on January 20,2012, is open for initial public comment through March 5, 2012 (77 FR 2924). The NRC staff provided a brief background of the 2010 rule change to 10 CFR Part 110 that added the clarifying language "of U.S. origin" to exclusion one to the definition of radioactive waste in 10 CFR 110.2. The NRC staff also provided a brief overview of the purpose and content of the draft BTP. This was followed by a presentation and several statements by industry representatives regarding the impact of the rule change on their import/export operations. NRC staff and meeting attendees engaged in a discussion about the draft BTP. Several clarifying questions regarding the BTP were asked and initial feedback on the draft BTP was provided to NRC staff. At the end of the meeting, NRC staff thanked participants for the helpful feedback and asked that any specific feedback or comments on the draft BTP be provided in writing prior to the close of the March 5,2012 comment period. The NRC staff will consider these comments along with any comments received in response to the Federal Register notice and will revise the draft BTP as appropriate. The BTP will then be published as a proposed BTP in the Federal Register for formal comment. The draft BTP is available in Agencywide Documents Access and Management System under Accession Number ML 11355A 135. Meeting attendees included NRC staff, NEI and industry representatives.
