Tres Wins ABTA Title #2 at Westminster (L-R) Lynn Waldie 15th, Marv Crowder (runnerup) Marife Catalsan, Tres Catalsan (Champion) $2,200, Cindy Santoro (Westminster Lanes), Chan Hou 3rd and Ray Grabinski 5th.

Tres Catalasan has been an ABTA Member 14 years and now is making up for lost time. Has has two wins, both coming in the year 2008. He is making up for the first 13 years, as he won his second Title at Westminster Lanes finally downing upstart Marv Crowder in the title game to take home a nice $2,200 for his fine effort. He won from the top seeded postion.

Our return to Westminster had 170 entrants and pro-duced cut scores of Men +41 and the Ladies checking in at +11 to make the semifinals.

We had 48 bowlers ad-vance to the semifinals. Lead-ing the Semis was the pride of CAL Bowl Tres Catalasan at a +70 just edging out Roland “Pacquio” Suase who had +70 so Tres would sit out to bowl the title game and Pacquio to receive a first round bye in the single elims and enter in round two. It took a +13 for the men and +11 for the 3 guaranteed ladies to make the Sweet 16 Single Elim Finals.

The Bowlers took to the lanes. In the first round sin-gle elims losing were Sonia Mansfield Johnson, Lynn Waldie, Eddie Abarca, Minh Dang, Wendy Soo Hoo, Bill

Tres Wins 2nd ABTA Title at Westminster Midtown Bowl is our Host this Saturday • Match Game est $3,500

Qualify Saturday 12:00-1:00-2:30 & 4:00- Semis & 3-6-9 at 5:30 PMSwanson, and Ngheim Tran. They got checks of $100 in 10-16th places.

In round two being elimi-nated were “Pacquio” Suase. Erick Volk, Sun Sundara and Jason Calderwood. They cashed in 6-9 th places and $110 each.

Round three had Chan Hou take out Ray Grabin-ski 205-176. Marv Crowder edged John Daily 207-204. So Ray and John were 4th and 5th with fine bowling and $120, each with Marvin and Chan to meet for the right to bowl Tres for the title.

In this match Chan seemed to lose his shot and Marvin did not winning in a 229-172 game. So Chan was 3rd with great bowling with Marvin going on to the title game. The title game was set and the horses were paid! Marvin returned $52 in the horse bets for everyone who had him at $5.00 entry. and both spared in frames 1-2

The title game was on and both spared in frames 1-2. Marv opened/split frame 3 and Tres started his run with a big three bagger to take a nice 17 pin lead. Both bowl-ers then were clean til Tres chopped a spare in the 9th. Marv had his chance but came

up light leaving the tough 2-10 split and missed. So Tres had the big lead now. After both bowlers marked the 10th Tres won title #2, 201/218-175/200 and a tidy $2,200 top prize, and a title very well deserved. Congratulations Tres! It was well deserved! Great Bowling!

Nice bowling by Marvin Crowder who almost got his first title. He is a fine bowler and one of the good guys for sure!

Chan Hou in 3rd bowled very well and he is one of our most faithful members. A title is next for him!.

Tourney Hi Qualifiers were Ed Abarca for the men +135, and pretty Faye Josefat led the gals with a big +127. They both get paid entries.

“Iron Mike” was last up in the 3-6-9, but missed on the first shot. We will go for $600 this week at Midtown Lanes.

The Match Game was Matched at a 216 drawn by the Champ Tres. We had one very Lucky and Deserving Winner of $3,500, Oliver Esmejarda who is one of the nicest guys you can meet and he is so deserving! Everyone who knows Oliver had a smile on their face. Oliver has some plans for that $3,500. Con-

grats to one of the good Guys! With our carryover of $2,720 the Match game will again be worth $3,500 this Saturday at Midtown with the balance going to a reserve pot!

Match Series worth $626 was also Matched at a 616 by none other than our Camera Man Ely Cruz! He also is most deserving. Good Guys strike again! Nympha was so proud and happy :-) We will estimate a $350 Match Series this week, for only $2.00 to enter.

Commissioner’s Exemption

Mark Roth captured one of his 34 Denny’s PBA Tour titles at Bradley Bowl in nearby Windsor Locks, CT

SEATTLE—PBA Commis-sioner and CEO Fred Schrey-er announced today he has awarded PBA Hall of Famer Mark Roth a Commissioner’s Exemption to compete in the 2008 Go RVing Classic at Norwich Bowling and Enter-tainment Center in Norwich, Conn., March 5-9.

Roth, who is tied for third all-time with 34 Denny’s PBA Tour titles, was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in 1987. He was named PBA Player of the Year four times in his career and led the Tour in average a record-tying six times. He still holds the PBA record for most titles in a single season, captur-ing eight in 1978. He followed up that record-setting season with seven victories in 1979.

Roth, who resides in Fulton, N.Y., was – and still is – one of the most popular stars in the game due to his unique style.

“They say I’m the grandfa-ther of the modern game. I start-ed cranking the ball and played about five boards deeper than most guys,” Roth said. “When you watch the old shows you can see the difference.

That gave me what these guys have now. They learned to bowl with resin and urethane and we started bowling with rubber. The game changes every 10 years. It’s just part of life.”

Roth, who competes regu-larly on the PBA Senior Tour, also took part in this season’s H&R Block Tournament of Champions, one of four Majors on the Denny’s PBA Tour.

“It was a really great week although it would have been better if I’d carried better the last block,” Roth said of his 45th-place finish. “I’m feeling good though, I went to Michi-gan last week to do an exhibi-tion and shot 740 in a league there which was kind of neat. I shot 280 the last game and people were going nuts.”

The 56-year-old Roth, who owns two PBA Senior Tour titles including the 2002 PBA Senior World Championship – captured one of his 34 Denny’s PBA Tour titles at Bradley Bowl in nearby Windsor Locks, Conn. His win in the 1978 Greater Hartford Open came on his 27th birthday.

“I’d like to get to the top 32 this week and take it from there. You always want to get to the show because once you get there, whatever happens, happens,” Roth said. “I hope to find the magic touch again and use it this week. I’m looking forward to going out and enjoy-ing myself. I’ll just bowl my best and hope I can carry when I need to. Give me the extra hit and carry the 10-pin.”

The Go RVing Classic gets underway Wednesday, March 5 with the Denny’s PBA Tour Qualifying Round followed by the Round of 64 on Thursday where Roth will join a field of 11 qualifiers and 52 Denny’s PBA Tour exempt bowlers. The top 32 will advance to match play Friday with the final four competing for the $25,000 top-prize Sunday, March 9 live on ESPN at 12:30 p.m. ET.

LAKE ELSINORE—We want to thank Trevi Zone for hosting our last Sat. tourna-ment. Trevi is a great house to bowl, plus they have their huge family entertainment center which everyone enjoys.

Lauren Hazlett, our newest champion, is a 5’2” - 120 lb. petite young lady who throws a mean 16 lb. ball. She won with her 16 lb. Brunswick Speed Zone, drilled by E.G. Mock, at Trevi Zone.

Lauren is in charge of the bowling events & is league co-ordinator at Trevi Zone. She has only been bowling for 5 months & attributes her playing softball in high school (pitcher & catcher) to her bowl-ing skills.

It also does not hurt to have your boyfriend & bowling partner, Adam Williams, for your bowling coach.

Lauren bowls in one league at Trevi Zone, Thursday Pro-Practice, & her highest game bowled was a 277 scratch. Although Lauren keeps very busy with her work at Trevi Zone she also is a mother to

Inland Empire NABI Champion Lauren Hazlett

Mia, her 3 1/2 year old daugh-ter, the love of her life. Lauren dedicates this win to Adam for his coaching & encouragement & of course, to her beautiful daugher, Mia. Lauren won $620, a champion shirt & an entry into the Tournament of Champions at the NABI July, 2008 Nationsls at the Orleans, in Las Vegas

Just One of The Smith Brothers Some Winning Tips

Ask yourself, “What do I really know about Leverage; Torque; RG (Radius of gyration); Matching revs to ball speed?”

I bring these up because in light of each Sunday’s PBA tourna-ment TV finals, it occurred to me just how much the importance of these principles of physics has increased as the sport of bowling has modernized. Week after week, the TV finalists are obviously able to display dominance in the above areas

This evolution of our beloved sport hasn’t been as gradual as you may think, however. It has come in jumps (or lurches, as some would say). In the old days of shellacked lanes, better bowlers often created sort of a “tunnel” toward the pocket in that soft shellac. Releasing the ball into that tunnel just right improved pocket chances dramatically. High revs and hook made the ball jump out of that tunnel, so that didn’t work. That’s why body extension (torso tilting and back leg stretching) was so successful back then. It helped release the ball into the tunnel.

However, after fire departments and insurance companies said, “No more flammable lane finishes!” those shellac, (as well as lacquer finishes), disappeared. So finding a line became more difficult, which is why so few 300 games were shot. Oiling was done either by drag mop or with a hand pump spray. To say it was inconsistent would be a compliment. Anyway, eventually the cur-rent synthetic lane beds, modern reactive and particle balls, plus the highly sophisticated oiling machines came in.

Result? No more tunnels! Un-TiltIn the current smooth, oiled lane surfaces, modern reactive

and particle balls grab the lane surface better, but make the lanes break down faster. So the old torso bending, “extension” body position no longer works. That’s also a reason why the old “lift” release no longer works as well, either. Creating lift by hitting up on the ball causes a tendency for the already revving ball to jump slightly sideways as it hits the lane. Many of you already know this. So extension has been replaced with a more torso upright (un-tilted) body position.

Part 1 - LeverageTherefore, a “feed the ball into the lane” type of release, ex-

ecuted at the bottom of the swing is better than lift. This is more effectively accomplished with that “sitting” body position which allows the release to more easily come at swing’s bottom, where it belongs. Why? Because leverage is improved by releasing the ball into the lane like a landing airplane…at a slightly downward angle…which can only be done without over-tilting the torso.

Some refer to this so called sitting position as body “under” ball…meaning rather than “over” the ball, as in the old extension method of yesteryear. So visualize this: As important as it is to get lower with knee bend to stay under the ball, once you tilt your torso forward, your body is suddenly over the ball instead of under it! And leverage is lost!

A Helpful Technique To develop the correct sitting position, try the following:

As you take your last step, simply tell yourself, “Bring my left hip forward and downward.” (Left handers, right hip) It helps to visualize a bit. You’ll notice that as the hip moves slightly for-ward at the line, your body automatically unbends just enough to eliminate over-tilting during the release!

So now you are lower at the line and “under” the ball at the same time! With this technique you never attempt to unbend your back…it does it all by itself (see illustration).

Note that the chest is directly above the front knee. It never moves from that position.

You can try this right now, with no ball, just to prove to your-self that it works! This move has never failed with any student to whom I’ve taught it! Sure, it takes practice…but the results in extra pin fall should convince you. Also, it feels more comfortable once you get used to it. Many bowlers report less back and knee pain during the release!

Parts 2, 3 and 4 - Torque, RG and Rev/Speed MatchingTorque. A simple definition of torque, is “twisting force”. In

bowling, the word “torque” means not just revs, but exactly how the hand release creates the revs. A simple understanding of apply-ing torque is this: During the downswing, the hand must absolutely be kept behind the ball, without any turning whatsoever, all the way to the release point. Then, at the same instant that the fingers “trigger” the finger holes, the hand is turned a tiny ¼ of a turn, just enough to finish the follow through with the thumb facing approximately 12 o’clock. If the hand is turned too much or too

Instruction to Help Raise Your Scores

early, maximum torque is lost. Why is torque important? Because when the pocket is hit with a maximum torqued ball, maximum pin action is achieved. More strikes, less splits, a bigger pocket etc. are the result. But there are tricks to achieving this…tricks which usually require help from a high level coach. So my suggestion is, get some help if you want to really improve your strike potential by developing a “power torque” release.

RG means radius of gyration. Simply compare this to a fly-wheel. Put most of the weight near the wheel’s surface and it is harder to turn, but keeps turning longer. More weight near the center and it becomes easier to turn, but it stops turning sooner. Since bowling balls are like flywheels, you have a choice of high or low RG equipment depending on how early or late you want it to rev up, how long you want it to keep revving and how early or late you want it to hook. Your ball driller is the one to help with that.

Matching…something many bowlers have never even heard of, yet very important…and here we’re specifically referring to matching revs to ball speed or vice versa. So…failure to control hook is often caused by too many revs with slow ball speed, making it hard to keep the ball from constantly over-hooking. Conversely, the high speed cannonball with too few revs never gets a chance to complete its hook and can’t create pinfall, even at the pocket. Here we have a guide of sorts, which says that from release to pins, approximately 14 to 18 active revs are optimum. Note, I said approximately…this is not a hard and fast rule, but it’s reasonable. A strip of white tape, 1 inch wide and 4 or 5 inches long, placed above the ring finger hole and pointing toward your positive axis point (pap) makes it easy to count revs…to check your efficiency on such matching. But remember…if the ball “rolls out” before impact, those “roll out” revs don’t count.

Why did I choose these particular points to cover this month? Read on.

The Smith PhenomenonSeveral years ago, in Phoenix Arizona, the US Open men’s

division winner was Robert Smith, then age 24. Since then, de-spite recent hip problems Smith has become one of the PBA’s top players. My point today is what happened back then. Smith won by defeating Norm Duke by only 1 pin in the final match, 202 to 201. Today’s subject matter deals with some of the things he did to prevail during that week and in the finals, over many of the country’s (and the world’s) greatest bowlers.

I knew Robert Smith was 1993 U S amateur champion and a 1994 Team USA member before joining the PBA, but I had never met him. Con Wednesday, coach John Jowdy and I were watching Smith throwing a ton of ball, stringing strikes. “Look at Smith!” I said. “Consistent form, good leverage, high revs and matching speed. Wow!” Jowdy answered, “Notice that follow through to-ward his break point? I taught him that when he was in college.” When coach Jowdy introduced me to Smith I said, “Keep this up and I’ll write about you in the newspapers.” Smith just gave me a smile and kept bowling.

Switching To A Different RG Ball…And MatchingIn the very next game, quick lane break down caused Smith to

start hitting high. In spite of his adjustments, he split, due to early hook and too many revs for his ball speed. First, he switched to a “longer” ball (different RG). That worked, but only for a while. So here’s how he solved the problem…and where a great lesson comes in for all high revving bowlers. Coach Jowdy suggested to Smith that he immediately have a “Sarge Easter” ball drilled. That’s a ball drilled fingertip for the middle finger, but conventional for the ring finger. That slowed down Robert’s rev rate enough to match his ball speed.

Presto! Problem solved. No wonder coach Jowdy is in the PBA Hall of Fame!

After that, Smith left less splits, converting enough of them to wind up top seed for the TV finals. By then I knew him well enough for a congratulatory hug. “I picked you to win yesterday,” I said, “and I still do. Now I won’t be the only one writing about you, that’s for sure!” Smith just chuckled in his friendly manner.

In the final match, Smith and Norm Duke were virtually tied, when each left a difficult split. Smith’s was the dreaded 3-4-6-7. Duke missed his, but Smith converted…for the 1 pin win!

But he wouldn’t have gotten that final chance without having first mastered those four techniques we’ve discussed here. So you can see why they’re so important!

No Lift. Chest Above Front KneeRelease At Front Ankle

Ready or Not, Here We Come!by Jackie Wyckoff

ALBUQUERQUE, NM—For the average league bowler, even those high average scratch players, the USBC Open Champion-ships Tournament is the most exciting and prestigious tournament they will ever bowl. Our group of 20 regular players have been participating for an average of fifteen years and we never get tired of marching out, reporting to our lanes, and greeting teams and players from other states that we see once a year.

Over the past dozen years we have bowled the second week of the tournament because it fell on President’s weekend and our players didn’t have to take too much time off work to participate. In 2007 the USBC decided to eliminate the first week of the event, so for the past two years we have bowled on the opening weekend.

While the USBC Tournament is one of the best run tournaments in the world, from our experience, it is a horse of a different color when you bowl the opening weekend. What is the problem? The fact is the USBC Tournament staff and facilities are just not ready. Sounds strange, doesn’t it? I mean it’s not like we just decided to show up and didn’t tell anyone. We made our reservations a year in advance.

We arrived early to bowl the satellite tournaments, the Bowl-ers Journal tournament and the new RotoGrip Sport tournament. These events were scheduled to start on Saturday, the 16th. A perfect fit for our Sunday/Monday USBC Open Tournament squads.

As it turns out, our advanced planning didn’t work out and we were not able to bowl in either tournament. For the second year in a row the Bowlers Journal tournament was not open and the new RotoGrip Sport Bowling event, held at the stadium, was not ready. Neither of these tournaments held squads until Sunday, February 17th, even though they advertised that they would be up and run-ning squads by 10:00am on Saturday, February 16th.

Several of our players use the USBC Bowling Ball Express. This service is great for those players who want to ship more balls than the airlines allow for baggage and for players like me who need an extra suitcase just for my shoes. We have been using this service since it’s inception in Knoxville in 2003 with great suc-cess. Unfortunately, it was not open on Friday when we arrived. On Saturday morning the staff was still wandering around the convention center trying to find our equipment.

Since we bowl very early in the tournament we almost always get our names on the leaderboard. Our tradition is to take a picture of the team, doubles pair or individual, pointing to their name on the leaderboard. Not this year. There was no leaderboard in the center and the staff didn’t even provide a printout of the scores. We had no idea how anyone placed until I returned home and received a press release, which lists the top 10 scores in each event. We had teams in 3rd & 5th place, two doubles teams in the top ten, a 3rd place in singles, a 2nd place in all-events in regular division and 6th place in all-events in the classified division. I took a picture of the hole in the wall where the leaderboard was placed the day after we left. I guess this will have to suffice for the scrapbooks.

Another nice feature we have enjoyed over the years is getting your printed scores almost immediately following your squad. Our teams depend on these sheets to determine who will buy the beers each year. We were told that “it’s not working” and we never received scoresheets from our team event.

I had an opportunity to speak to Brian Lewis, the tournament director. To his credit he didn’t offer excuses as to why things weren’t ready, just an apology. The new leaderboard, purchased just last year for Reno, was damaged in transit. Things like this happen, but why couldn’t they print out a sheet of paper and post it in the center? Sometimes “big picture” guys don’t see simple solutions. I have to compliment him on how well he runs the tournament overall. His staff is always cheerful and helpful, even in those early days of learning the ropes. We appreciate that the squads run closer to on-time since he took over and the brackets were a fantastic addition. He made the best tournament even better from a players’ perspective.

Our teams will be bowling later in the tournament next year. We are not alone. At least a half-dozen teams who bowled our squad will be moving as well. It seems to me that it would be more productive to fix the problems that occur during the first days of the tournament rather than eliminate the first week of the tournament, due to lack of participation. Eliminating the first week just moved the problems to what use to be the second week of the tournament and is now the first. Hopefully this new first week of the tournament will not suffer from a lack of participation, but that is doubtful. We went back over to the convention center on Monday after our singles and doubles squads, to do our obligatory tee-shirt shopping. The entire convention center was closed, locked up tight, no shopping and no bowling. What a shame.

After being treated like Kings and Queens for the past dozen years it’s hard to accept that the players who bowl early don’t merit the same level of service as those who bowl the rest of the tournament. USBC knows when the tournament will start more that a year in advance, and there are no excuses for not being ready to go when advertised.

Real Men Don’t Shun Pink!

NABI SAN DIEGO—Sea & Air Lanes was the site of the tournament over the weekend, & Robert “Ando” Anderson earned his second champi-onship using his Roto Grip Mystic/Pink Tzone ball. Chal-lenging conditions kept scores low, as –6 was the cut for the semifinals. Even the finals reflected the lower scoring, as it took –27 to make the top five. Ando was the second seed, & Paul Passarino was the number one, so the title match was a battle of lefties. The two bowl-ers battled frame by frame, but a couple of timely strikes gave Ando the title. Congratulations to both bowlers. The other finalists were Ron Tanja, Anita Smith & Scott Duncan.

In perpetual pot action, the 3-6-9 was shared by Paul Willey & Scott Duncan, for $50 each.

Guaranteed $50 sidepots went to Nick Inganna, Mike

Yellen, Bryan Klein, James Smith, Anita Smith, James Horst (2), Duncan & Pas-sarino.

Once again we want to thank the base personnel who made access smooth, & made us feel welcome on the base.

Our next tournament is also on a military base, Admiral Robinson, on he 32nd St. Naval Station, March 15th. Check the Bowling News ad next week for complete details. See you the 15th at Admiral Robinson …..…. we’ll save a cookie (& some Easter goodies) for you!

Bowling Writers Of AmericaPick Bowlers Of the Year

Allen, Johnson Earn BWAA Bowler Of the Year Honors

To be named Bowler of the Year is the highest and most sought-after annual award offered to the sport’s top athletes. To win it twice in a three-year span is an exceptionally more remarkable accom-plishment. Duplicating their efforts of 2005, Patrick Allen and Liz Johnson have been voted the nation’s top male and female bowlers of 2007 by the Bowling Writers Association of America. Allen of Wesley Chapel, FL began 2007 by breaking out of a serious slump, winning the H & R Block Classic in Reno, NV, the first week of January. Further victories in Council Bluffs, IA, and Baltimore made the 37-year-old lefthander the most titled player on the Denny’s PBA Tour during the calendar year. Johnson of Cheektowaga, NY, prevailed in the 2007 USBC Women’s U.S. Open as well as the PBA’s Ladies & Legends tournament. She fin-ished no lower than fifth during the four-event Women’s Series on the PBA Tour and rolled an 843 three-game set during match play of the Masters tournament. Johnson’s 14th place finish represented the highest finish by a woman in the history of the Masters. Allen received 43 first place votes, 19 seconds and 16 thirds for 269 points. Walter Ray Williams Jr. was runner-up with 24 first place votes and 208 points. Others receiving votes were Sean Rash (12-134); Chris Barnes (15-114) and Pete Weber (6-60). Johnson earned 46 first place votes along with 26 seconds and 10 thirds for 292 points. Diandra Asbaty was next with 20 firsts and 173 points. Others receiving votes were Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (17-156); Kelly Kulick (13-132) and Wendy MacPherson (3-28).

Asbaty, Page Named 2007 BWAA Amateurs Of The Year

Team USA members Diandra Asbaty and Rhino Page have been selected as the 2007 Amateur Bowlers of the Year by the Bowling Writers Association of America. Asbaty, a Dyer, IN, native residing in Chicago, was a unanimous selection while Page, a San Diego native living in Topeka, KS, came one vote short of unanimous in the balloting of the BWAA Amateur Bowler of the Year committee. Another Team USA member, Bill Hoffman of Columbus, OH, earned the other male first-place vote. Asbaty started her 2007 in January with a fourth-place finish in the USBC Team USA Trials in Reno, NV. She earned her first major 2007 victory in May with the World Ranking Masters women’s title in Lake Wales, FL. That came just five days after finishing second in the USBC Queens in Charlotte, NC. In July, Asbaty collected the women’s doubles gold medal at the Pan American Games in Brazil. Then in late August and early September, she earned a gold medal in Masters and silver in the team event in the World Tenpin Bowling Association Women’s World Champion-ships in Monterey, Mexico. She capped the year in December by winning the final event in Professional Bowlers Association Women’s Series at Wyoming, MI. Page’s year also began well with a runner-up finish at the USBC Team USA Trials. He earned gold medals in singles and doubles at the Pan American Games and gold medals in team and Masters and bronze in all-events at the WTBA Men’s American Zone Championships in late June and early July. For his efforts, Page was named United States Olympic Committee Athlete of The Year for Bowling and Bowlers Journal International Amateur of the Year. Hoffman and Derek Eoff, Greenfield, WI, tied for second place in the Men’s Amateur of the Year voting. Shannon O’Keefe, Brook-field, WI, was runner-up behind Asbaty for the women.

Orange County Bowling Leader Bill Huntington Remembered

by Frank Kietz GARDEN GROVE — Orange County’s bowling legend OC/USBC/Ass’n. President Bill Huntington, 65, died of natural causes in his sleep Monday morning, February 25. No matter what that ever-smiling portly gentleman was doing, it was something for tenpins. Sunday, February 24, he was monitoring the last squad of the Orange County’s 2008 Women’s Tournament, even selling raffle tickets and handmade craft items. Masonic Services, attended by 250 people, were held Saturday, March 1, 2008 at Fairhaven Memorial Park. He was buried in Miami, Arizona, where he was born and got interested in bowling. He set pins, a foul line judge, dust the alleys, replaced fractured boards, made his eating/bowling money working in the copper mines shoveling ore, feed the crushers, smelt the ore as he told it, even made pennies. He was smart enough to qualify as an electrician. He learned his way being IBEW officer, even organizing teams and doing charity work for his union. He worked his way up the OCBA chairs, committeeman, line-officer, a serious delegate doing his share of local, county, state and national chores. During his tenure, OCBA, men and women, were in their glory days receiving honors for the best bowlers, big money-winning pros, a few controversial people, yes, just like any normal com-munity. Perhaps Bill got recognized when the Orange County Bowling Council got their bowling trailer. Yup, a working AMF lane fitted on a special trailer to be pulled around our 40-center jurisdiction promoting tenpins. It was the envy of the bowling world. Lots of interest, used as a fundraiser, promotion getter, as he would brag how many free game coupons were given out. We developed many bowlers out of the Orange County 28-day annual Faire. He kept the trailer moving. Knew how to get/use proprietor/association volunteers. He was a leader, he showed how to keep those kids interested rewarding them with free bowling at their favorite Orange County center. Besides the trailer, he had monthly/annual meetings to run, get crews to run tournaments, check lanes, audit books, hold hearings, build membership, really remarkable, he did it with a smile. He was visable. He didn’t do all the work, his wife Cheryl and many before her ran the OCWBA. Bill and those before him, volunteers and paid employees, and center owners/managers/staffs co-operated. Bill will be missed. This writer learned a great deal from him, enjoyed his stories, his friendship, reliability, we knew the job would get done. Now it’s time for all good bowlers, or yes, Bill was an avid kegler, in the 150s, early days 180, to volunteer, keep the trailer rolling. Cheryl is getting ready for the next March 12 Associaiton Board meeting and the next Bowling Council Noon Thursday, March 13 meeting at Fountain Bowl. For more information, call 714-554-0111.

Saturday Linbrook Juniors Cup Runneth Over With A Plethora Of Season Highs

by Stacy ANAHEIM — It was a banner day for many of Saturdays Juniors. Team 11, Ghost Bowlers showed how it’s done. Teammates Erika McFeggan (172/431), Nicole Tan (149/370), and Ventressca Randall (127/330) all set season highs for game and series. Edrick Tayag mowed ‘em down scoring 206 with a 577 season high series. Next in line was Destini Gardner 128-133-179/440 with a new ball and three new high games and 100 pins over her previous series. Jessica Quental blasted 138-141-155/433 for a consistent series. Shawn McFeggan 139/351 and Domynyc Gardner 156/331 took a page from Team 11, both bowled their high game and series. Other milestones worth mention are the season hgh games bowled by Matt Clark154, Owen Hemming 131 and Aamin Kudri 105. Congratulations! Other high scores in the Saturday Juniors were Aaron Wilson leading the way slinging a 243-202 adding up to a 627. Bobby Hornacek strolled in right behind earning 215-217 and a 611 series. Robert Albrecht and Andrew Stewart bowled twin 605 series and Valerie Matsumoto showed them how it was done ripping a 243 game. Boys take the lead in the Saturday Bumper Busters. Taylor Paczkowski rolled 28 pins over his average with a strong 122 and followed it up with a 116. Jennifer Lewis kept up with a 120, 17 pins over her average. It was a tough day on the lanes for the Junior High 2008 crew, but Robert Albrecht rolled a 193. Julio Delcid chimed in with a 123 and Jesse Ledesma rang the bell with a 121. Thursday Juniors were led by the female contingernt as Nicole Curtis bowled a cool 201. Jeff Hunt weighed in with a 179 and Jessica Quental was right behind him with a solid 175. Matthew Vigeant scored 165 and Ashley Bambrick finished up with a nifty 127-125-/359 series. This week in the Junior Adult scratch league, Mark McLeod outscored junior and adult alike, with 215-244-212 for a splendid 671 series. Andrew Stewart had a 192-247-191 for 630 series, which helped gain his team four wins for the day. Alexis Adinofi strutted her stuff with a 250 high game, a 609 high series and a four-win sweep. Another high game man was Jimmy Vasquez with 232 and Aaron Wilson earned mention rolling a 227. The adults took a back seat this week, but Stacy Rider outscored the rest with a 249-244 and a 660 series helping her partner win four. Bob Mathias put up a respectable 212 and a 605 series, while Tony Park came through scoring a 213. Good Luck to all who are bowling Pepsi Tournament this weekend!

hard. I felt like I was tricking them all day,” Barnes (Double Oak, Texas) said. “I didn’t re-ally have a good look the whole day, I just grinded it out and made enough good shots and made the other guy show up.”

Simard, who showed the poise of a veteran in his first career TV appearance, stepped up in the 10th needing all three to win. Standing in front of the ball return on the right lane, he struck with his first shot before splitting on his second.

“There’s definitely help-lessness in watching him try to strike out to win. The other times that’s happened to me, the guys have bowled like profes-sionals and gone bang, bang, bang and see you later,” Barnes said. “I’ve also been in that spot he’s in needing three in a row. If he gets up and throws three in a row on his first show on that lane, then I just have to tip my cap. But I didn’t like his chances based on what had hap-pened over there before.”

The win gives Barnes two titles in a season for the second time in his career but the first time since the 1999 season. It was also meaningful to the Columbia 300 staffer, who won the event named after the late PBA Hall of Famer Don Johnson, a famed Columbia staffer himself.

“It’s a really good feeling. I just feel like someone else had a plan,” Barnes said. “As many times as I’ve left a 10-pin or 4-pin or 7-pin and guys have stepped up and won, today guys didn’t. Historically on the one-game thing it hasn’t worked my way. I do think maybe ‘Koko Butter’ was up there looking out for another Columbia staffer.”

The win gives Barnes a four-point lead over Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the PBA Player of the Year race with three events remaining, including the season-ending 65th Denny’s U.S. Open, the fourth Major of the season which awards more Player of the Year points than standard events.

“It’s by no means over,” Barnes said. “Walter Ray aver-ages about one show every four events so odds are he’s going to make another show which means I have to make another show, too. He does have to make one now, though, and it’s not easy out here. At the U.S. Open you still have to beat 480 guys to get there. We all know he’s been the best out here year in and year out. They’ve tried to write him off four or five times, but I don’t ever write him off.”

It almost wasn’t to be for Barnes, who nearly cost him-self again in the 10th frame of a title match. Needing a mark and nine pins to shut Simard out, Barnes left the 2-8-10 with his fill ball to give Simard the opportunity to win.

But the 28-year-old couldn’t come through in the clutch, giv-ing Barnes the victory.

Barnes advanced to the title match with a 222-213 win over his Tour roommate Mika Koivuniemi, the second times Barnes has knocked off the “Big Finn” in the semifinals this season en route to a title. After Barnes left a 4-6-7 and opened in the ninth frame after five consecutive strikes, Koivu-niemi had a chance to win with a mark and eight pins. He left the 3-10, however, and needing a mark to still have a chance to win, Koivuniemi chopped the spare to give Barnes the win.

Simard advanced to the title match with a 237-226 win over Wes Malott.

Barnes earned $25,000 with his win while Simard (Simp-sonville, S.C.) earned $13,000

for second. Malott (Argyle, Texas) and Koivuniemi (Hart-land, Mich.) took home $6,000 each for third and fourth, re-spectively.

The Denny’s PBA Tour moves to Norwich, Conn., next week for the 2008 Go RVing Classic, March 5-9 at Norwich Bowling and Entertainment Center. The live ESPN-tele-vised finals take place Sunday, March 9 at 12:30 p.m. ET.

National Deaf Bowling NewsJones Tops Deaf Travel With 256/918 at Bowling Square

by Connie Marchione

ARCADIA—Just a day before, Bob Jones rolled 10 strikes in row to end up with a 277 in the North Los Angeles County USBC Association’s City Tournament at AMF Mid-town Bowl, Bob was at his sea-son best in the So. Calif. Deaf Travel with a 918 series at AMF Bowling Square. Bob rolled games of 224-207-236-256 to lead the honor roll. His 256 tied Francisco Navarro’s earlier one for the day’s high game.

Darrell Stogryn who led the honor roll the previous 3 times placed second with 890 from games of 247-236-194-213. Navarro who was matched against Stogryn was pressed on to do his season’s best 887 in his duel with Stogryn. Navarro won only one game with his 256 as he lost the first game with his 236 and in third game by one with his 193 and last game with 201.

Also Stogryn’s El Camino Village with Robert Audette assisting with steady games 755 beat Navarro’s league leading Los Angeles 17 to 8.

Gardy Rodgers had 721 as their Los Angeles dropped out of first place.

Riverside with its dynamic duo of Ed Abakumoff and Andy Lorenzo doing good with 820 and 818 respectively regained first place by edging Jones’ S F Valley 13.5 to 11.5.

Ed had 246-203-191-180 while Andy tossed 204-235-194-185 and Jim Mohr tossed in a 212.

The league thanks AMF Bowlng Square Manager Sher-yl Martin and her staff for host-ing with good scoring condition which resulted in 176 plus average per bowler.

Next Sunday’s travel takes them hopefully to another high scoring house, Del Rio Bowl.

by David YamauchiJordan Scott Joins The Ranks of ChampionThe JAT made its way to Fullerton and the very tough condi-

tion at AMF Carter Lanes. Seems the house hadn’t oiled since Saturday morning making the Sunday morning condition brutal. There was definite left-side bonus on the lanes as three of the top-4 finalists were southpaws. Jeff Spiesman lit up qualifying at +461 for 5 games in the Classic format where scoring highlights were few and far between. In the finals, Jordan Scott defeated Jeremy Glover 217-193, Natalie Jimenez 223-174 and top-seed Jeff Spies-man 187-170 en route to his first JAT title! Jordan earns $200 for his win and to help pay for gas from Fresno!

LA HABRA—JST tour 8 was held this weekend at La Habra 300 bowl. I would like to thank Alvin Camba and his staff for hosting the tournament and being so gracious enough to put out a sport oil pattern. The oil pattern used was the “Chee-tah” and it proved to be a good challenge for the bowlers. All divisions bowled on the same oil pattern. I must thank all our sponsors for their continued generous support, Roto Grip, Pins & Needles, Sports Innova-tors Thank You. I went a little crazy with the youth bowlers working so hard I took a page out of national spending and tried some deficit spending in the scholarship area and handed out $1,000.00, even with a low turn out, again thanks to our sponsors!

Hdcp Novice the cut was 723 for the top 6 to move on to match play with Kylie Shishi-ma being the cut. Leading was Stephanie Zavala at 842. Get-ting the points for High game went to Javier Zavala with a 209, High series points went to Stephanie with the 842. Match play saw some movement with Javier moving past his sister into the #1 seat, Johnathan Hull moving into the #2 seat and Stephanie holding the #3 spot. Johnathan was able to hold off Stephanie with a 153 to her 139, allowing him to move to meet Javier for the title. In a very close match Johnathan got by Javier with a 127 to 120 to take the win.

Intermediate division the cut Vincent Nolan with 703 or – 297, leading was Wesley Low with a 870/-130. Wesley se-cured the double point for series while Lesliann Katsura took them for high game. Match play saw very little movement, with Nick Guggisberg up to meet Lesliann for the first match Nick rolled a 151 defeating Lesliann’s 125. Nick now was up against Wesley who had just won the last two events and look to be on the march for a 3 peat. But 3 pins made the difference with Nick Rolling a solid 196 to Wesley’s 193. Great bowling by both.

Advance division the cut Wishtoyo at -262/738, leading David Phillips with +6/1006. Great job David. The double points went to David for series and to Cody Mendoza for high gamer 212. After match play Cody last ground and dropped to 4th with Ryan Brown mov-ing into #3 spot, Scott Alvarez into the #2 and David holding on to #1. Scott stayed strong with a 200 vs Ryan’s 178. Scott was then up to meet David for the title and again Scott stayed strong with a 203 to David’s 195.

Open division J.R. Monteith and Jeff Spiesman lead the way with +127/1127 and Samantha Jimenez the cut at -4/996. In match play Samantha bowled well but just wasn’t able to get to the #3 spot held by Devin

Bidwell, Jeff Spiesman held on to #2 and J.R. to the #1 spot. No high game or series point issued because they were taken by non members. In the roll off Jeff Spiesman rolled a 224 to Devin’s 169. Jeff then up to meet J.R. for the title and again Jeff rolled a solid 244 to def. J.R.’s 196, nice bowling Jeff.

All the bowlers did very well and I am proud of you all for more professional way you dealt with the more dif-ficult shot. But I have to say something to the bowlers that bowl the JST Gold League; you may not have made the cut or won yesterday. But what I did notice in doing the points last night is for the most part you held you average! Yes a couple of you lost 1 pin the rest held your average and we need to give David Phillips a big ”high 5” he raised his average by 1 pin. If is gratifying to see what you are trying to learn on Saturdays put to work and work, to all Job Well Done!! I would like to thank Debbie, Joe Jimenez and Mark Myers for all their help yesterday. Our next tournament is March 16th at Del Rosa Lanes hope to see you there.

SED Jr. Travelby David Gordon

FULLERTON – Hello again to this weeks update of SED Jr. Travel. This past Saturday, the group took the floor at AMF Carter Lanes. Half of the league was missing due to other commitments, but those that did show were greeted by fresh oil and good scoring. Thank you Carter Lanes.

The high bowler for the day was Jimmy Schmitzer posting up 202-259-218/863. Kevin Jones also put in a 234-240/839 showing for our two 800 club members. Very, very good. Other highs on the day came from Chris Blankenship 206-223/776, Kim Ferdnance 200-204/775; Mark (upset at me) Curtis 208-221/753, Jas-mine Morales 703, and Eric Milne 202.

We also had a chance to get in some more make-ups and with the season winding down, every pin counts. With only three sessions left and only one more possible make-up session available, things are pretty tight. Pablo & Juan (J.D. Pelow/Max Slevcove) lead the twelve teams at 356 points, only 4 points more than second place Opposites Rules (Bryan Os-borne/Schmitzer). Third place is Silent – But Deadly (Jones/Curtis) with 345.5 points and fourth is Still Hungry – Yet Full! (Milne/Michael Gaylor) with 303 points. Each session is worth 21 points and a lot of damage can be done in three sessions. Also remember that our last two sessions are both position rounds. Could be interesting.

We also have our season highs still up for grabs. Team series (1775), team game (512), boy’s series (1005) and game (279), and girls (984) and (246). Also remember that some of you need to make sure you have that two-thirds (66 games) of the season to be eligible for those season high awards.

This week we are taking a bye for the Pepsi District finals. We will return on March 15th at AMF Valley View Lanes. Therefore enjoy your week(s); I’ll see some of you in Bakers-field and all of you at AMF Valley View.

The Sweeper will pay one place for every 4 entries. Fol-lowing the Sweeper, will be the great Bar BQ Steak dinner, at 6:00PM< the cost of $14/00 per person. There will also be the new latest line of Ebonite Bowling Balls, that will be on sale at a discounted cost to you. I have the Complete NV’s, all 15lb plus.

The following week-end, March 15-16, 2008, the WCST, will be in Pahrump, NV for the WCST Ebonite

Singles. Full details of the tournament, click onto www.westcoastseniortour.com to the INFORMATION PAGE, or call the WCST Office at 760-363-8141. Ebonite Bowling Balls will also be on sale at this tournament site.
