GRANBY HIGH SCHOOLATHLETIC DEPARTMENT

DRUG, ALCOHOL, AND TOBACCO USE AND INAPPROPRIATE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

The Granby High School Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Use and Inappropriate Use of Social Media policy was developed by the Granby High School coaching staff and student/athlete representatives in the Spring of 2012. This policy goes beyond the policy stated in the Norfolk Public Schools Athletic Handbook and is only related to Granby High School student/athletes. It is expected that all coaches will include both the NPS and the Granby High School policies related to the use of these substances in their team handbooks each year and will review both policies with the members of their team and their athletes’ parents. Both student/athletes and parents will be required to indicate their understanding of both policies by signing a statement indicating that they understand the policies and consequences of violating the policies.

PARENT/COACH COMMUNICATION

• BOTH PARENTING AND COACHING ARE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT VOCATIONS.

• COMMUNICATIONS YOU SHOULD EXPECT FROM YOUR CHILD’S COACH

1. PHILOSOPHY OF THE COACH2. GENERAL EXPECTATIONS3. LOCATIONS AND TIMES OF ALL PRACTICES AND CONTESTS4. TEAM REQUIREMENTS, SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, STRENGTH

AND CONDITIONING PROGRAMS5. PROCEDURE IF YOUR CHILD IS INJURED DURING

PARTICIPATION6. TEAM RULES, GUIDELINES, AND CONSEQUENCES FOR

APPROPRIATE CONCERNS TO DISCUSS WITH COACHES

• WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD IMPROVE• CONCERNS ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S

BEHAVIOR

Page 14: MEET THE COACHES NIGHT August 9, 2012, 6 PM. VHSL LEAGUE REQUIREMENTS First time ninth grade students will be eligible to participate in Virginia High.

It is very difficult to accept your child not playing as much as you hope. Coaches are professionals. They make decisions based on what they believe to be the best for all student athletes involved. As you have seen from the previous list, certain things can be and should be discussed with your child’s coach. Other things, such as those listed below, must be left to the discretion of the coach:

PLAYING TIME TEAM STRATEGY PLAY CALLING OTHER STUDENT ATHLETESTHERE ARE SITUATIONS THAT MAY REQUIRE A

CONFERENCE BETWEEN THE COACH AND PLAYER, OR COACH AND PARENT. THESE CONFERENCES ARE ENCOURAGED. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ALL PARTIES INVOLVED HAVE A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THE OTHER PERSON’S POSITION.

Page 15: MEET THE COACHES NIGHT August 9, 2012, 6 PM. VHSL LEAGUE REQUIREMENTS First time ninth grade students will be eligible to participate in Virginia High.

IF YOU HAVE A CONCERN TO DISCUSS WITH A COACH

1. CALL THE COACH TO SET UP AN APPOINTMENT2. IF THE COACH CANNOT BE REACHED, CALL THE

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TO HELP SET UP THE MEETING

3. PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CONFRONT A COACH BEFORE OR AFTER A CONTEST OR PRACTICE. THESE CAN BE EMOTIONAL TIMES FOR BOTH PARENT AND COACH. MEETING OF THIS NATURE USUALLY DO NOT PROMOTE POSITIVE RESOLUTIONS.

4. WE HAVE A “24” HOUR RULE. A COACH IS NOT PERMITTED TO DISCUSS ANY PROBLEMS WITH A PARENT/GUARDIAN WITHING 24 HOURS OF A CONTEST

Page 16: MEET THE COACHES NIGHT August 9, 2012, 6 PM. VHSL LEAGUE REQUIREMENTS First time ninth grade students will be eligible to participate in Virginia High.

1. Be a positive role model through your own actions to make sure your child has the best athletic experience possible.

2. Be a “team fan”, as well as a “my kid” fan.3. Weigh what your children say; they might slant the truth to their advantage4. Show respect for the opposing players, coaches, spectators, and support groups5. Be respectful of all officials’ decisions6. Praise student athletes in their attempts to improve themselves as students, as

athletes, and as people7. Gain an understanding and appreciation for the rules of the contest8. Recognize and show appreciation for an outstanding play by either team9. Help your child learn that success is oriented in the development of a skill and

should make a person feel good about themselves, win or lose10. If you as a parent have a concern, take time to talk with coaches in an

appropriate manner including proper time and place. Be sure to follow the designated chain of command.

11. Please reinforce our drug and alcohol-free policies by refraining from the use of any controlled substance before and during athletic contests.

12. Remember that a ticket to a school athletic event is a privilege to observe the contest

Athletic Participation Insurance

• Although extremely infrequent, serious injuries and death can occur.

• This threat necessitates that the school system provide a reasonable level of accident insurance for all participants

• Today, however, no available policy fully covers every contingency.

• Coverage under the NPS program is characterized as “full excess coverage.” It is secondary to existing health or accident coverage.

• Where other accident or health care insurance is unavailable, up to $25,000 of medical expense coverage could be available to the inured athlete beyond a $50.00 deductible that must be paid by the parent in every case

Page 18: MEET THE COACHES NIGHT August 9, 2012, 6 PM. VHSL LEAGUE REQUIREMENTS First time ninth grade students will be eligible to participate in Virginia High.

Student athletic accident claims procedure

(If your child is injured, he/she must pick up an insurance form.)• The athletic trainer will complete the injury information

section of the Claims of Injury Form.• The athletic trainer will give the signed form to the injured

student athlete, parent or guardian.• The parent/guardian must take the Notification of Injury

Form with them to the emergency room, physician’s office or dentist’s office, so the physician/dentist can fill out the medical section of the document. The parent/guardian must keep a copy of the Notification of Injury Form to submit to the carrier.

• The parent/guardian will receive billing statement from the hospital, physician or dentist. After bills are received, mail the Notification of Injury Form and billing statements to the claims department (address is on the top of the form). Keep a copy of the form and billing statements for your record.

Page 19: MEET THE COACHES NIGHT August 9, 2012, 6 PM. VHSL LEAGUE REQUIREMENTS First time ninth grade students will be eligible to participate in Virginia High.

• If you have your own insurance policy, you will follow the same procedure but will submit documentation to your insurance company. If your insurance company does not fully cover the cost of medical treatment, you may submit a Notification Of Injury Form after your insurance company has paid their part.

5. The parent/guardian will be responsible for submitting the Notification Of Injury Form and billing statements to claims and paying all bills not paid by the insurance company.

6. In the event of catastrophic injury in which medical expenses exceed the primary limit of $25,000, the parent should contact the VHSL and complete the appropriate claim forms. The VHSL can be contacted by telephone at (434)-977-8475

7. Parents should contact the school athletic trainer or athletic director if they encounter any problems associated with payment or medical expenses arising out of athletic injuries. Should the school officials be unable to resolve problems arising out of a medical claim of an insured athletic injury, you should call the Norfolk Public Schools director of Risk Management and safety at 628-3856

CONCUSSIONS

• The Virginia General Assembly has mandated that all student athletes, parents and coaches follow the Norfolk Public Schools Concussion Policy. A form must be reviewed and signed on a yearly basis after viewing a video.

• What is a concussion? A brain injury, and all brain injuries are serious• A repeat concussion that occurs before the brain recovers from the first can slow recovery or

increase the likelihood of having long term problems. In rare cases, repeat concussion can result in edema (brain swelling), permanent brain damage, and even death.

• What are the sigs and symptoms of a Concussion: appears dazed or stunned, is confused about assignments and positions, forgets instructions and answers questions slowly or inaccurately, is unsure of game, score, or opponent, loss of balance/coordination and moves clumsily, shows mood, behavior, or personality changes, can not recall events prior to hit or fall, can not recall events after hit or fall

• Symptoms reported by athlete may include one or more of the following: headache or “pressure” in head, nausea/vomiting, balance problems or dizziness, sensitivity to light or sound/noise, feeling sluggish, hazy, groggy, or foggy, difficulty with concentration, short-term memory and/or confusion, double vision or changes in vision, irritability, just not “feeling right” or is “feeling down”

• As we enter the winter season for winter sports, it is important to be aware of potential health risks that are unique to athletes. Skin infections characterized by rashes, open wounds or sores, have been reported nationally in athletes mostly in high-physical-contact sports such as wrestling, football, and rugby. However, these infections have been reported among athletes in other sports, as well, such as soccer, basketball, field hockey, volleyball, martial arts, and baseball. Therefore, anyone participating in organized or recreational sports should be aware of the signs of possible skin infections and follow prevention measures.

• Please be sure your child does the following:-washes hands often, keeps cuts and scrapes clean and covered, -if a sore or cut

becomes red, oozes, causes pain or isn’t healing, see a doctor promptly, -shower, --avoid sharing personal items, -routinely clean surfaces, sports equipment and gear as recommended, -if someone at home has a skin infection, talk to your doctor about how to prevent spread at home and at school.

Should you need further information, please contact the school nurse or our Epidemiology Team at 757-683-2801.
