When I was a kid, my favorite thing to do was draw. My dad is an artist, so I had a drafting table set up right beside his. I’ve always loved spending time with my dad and being creative. I also loved skateboarding, boogie boarding, and basketball. What did you most dislike doing when you were a child? I actually hated reading because I was dyslexic and the books my schools started me off with were not fun. As a child, where did you dream of living? I lived in sunny Southern California all through elementary school, so I was quite happy right where I was. What did you think you were good at when you were a kid? I thought I was pretty good at everything. My parents always told me I could do anything I wanted to do. I was really stubborn and proud, so if I couldn’t do something (like spin a basketball on my finger), I would practice all day until I got it down pat. When you were a kid in school, what did you look for in a friend? Someone with a great sense of humor and a kind heart—basically, someone who made me feel better for having spent time with them. This has not changed over the years. What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be an artist, a professional basketball player, a doctor, and/or a ninja! In Dojo Daytrip, the six little ninjas of Dojo Daycare are back and rowdier than ever during a field trip to the farm. From the moment the ninja boys and ninja girls step off their minibus, mayhem ensues, until they learn to heed their creed: Always help someone in need. What was your favorite book as a child? My favorite picture books were: Where the Wild Things Are, Green Eggs and Ham and Richard Scarry’s books. My favorite chapter books were How to Eat Fried Worms, Freckle Juice, and any Choose Your Own Adventure books.

What is your favorite pastime now?I still love sports. I love basketball and mixed martial arts. I also enjoy going to the putting green with my dad, and biking, and most of all, I still love being creative.

What do you find an absolute chore?Being around people who only talk about themselves and most of all, being around bossy, rude, or mean people.

If you could live anywhere, where would you go?Paris—just because.

What is the one talent you wish you had? That talent of controlling my thoughts and only thinking about things that make me happy and make other people happy.

What makes a good friend?Someone who is funny and kind with a good heart. Or someone like my mother—selfless with a heart of gold.

If you weren’t an author or illustrator, what job would you have?Maybe a psychiatrist, an actor—or a ninja.

What children’s books have caught your attention lately?I consider myself more of a writer than an illustrator, but it’s the artwork on the cover of a picture book that attracts my attention. Lately, I’ve been attracted to the work of Oliver Jeffers, Jon Klassen, Chris Haughton, and Julie Morstad.

If you had to have a motto, what would it be?It’s a quote often credited to Dr. Seuss that relates to how people judge you, and something I need to think about on a regular basis: “Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”
