By: Parrie Kay ******** On Monday September 9, 2013, KSD MS had their International Literacy Day in Kerr Hall’s basement. Genise Orberson said, “The United Nations set it up to Celebrate and focus on world literacy.” Why we celebrated was because it is important for everyone to learn how to read and write and learn a bit about other cultures. Some teachers told us short stories from other countries. They stopped before the end of the story. Kids wrote on paper what the character from the story’s problem was and told the character some advice. We answered and then the teachers signed until the end of the story. The students would see if the answer was right or wrong. Alexandra ******* thought: Rebecca’s expressions and action were very funny when she told the story “A Man Does Housework Right.” Payne ********: It was fun to watch the stories. Dakota ***********: Rebecca’s expressions and actions were very funny.

By: Leah Ware Our KSDMS had Book Talk activities in the Middle School classrooms on October 16, 2013. Before the Book Talk, all of the MS students had to sign up for one of the four books –Shiloh, A-Z Mystery : The School Skeleton, Going Batty, and Night of the Full Moon. Some students passed the AR test after reading those books. They could participate in the book talk after passing the AR test with a 70-100 percent. During the Book Talk, the teachers call students’ names who passed the test so they could participate. Some students didn’t passed the test so then worked on test taking skills. The students were excited to read the book and enjoy it. They discussed the book in depth that we read it and did some activities.

The book talks help improve the students’ reading and writing skills. Some students then played games related to their book some watched a movie about their book, and one group went on a scavenger hunt. Some students thoughts about the Book Talk… Aerial : The book was interesting. It was funny. Keaura ********: We watched the movie called Shiloh.” Plah **** : We searched for Mr. Bones.

By: Payne ******** KSD students went to Centre College on November 8, 2013 to see Dr. Kaboom. His show was part science, a lot of action and some learning was involved. KSD students saw a lot of explosion in a tall tube, a cannon that blew air out of it, and an illusion trick with a black and white spinning board that made his head look like it shrank or grew bigger. Kids learned that when chemicals go in a mixture there is a reaction and it can cause explosions. Also illusions can play with your mind to make you think heads do get bigger or shrink. Zhirtien thought it was fun to watch and learn about science. Aaron said he liked the explosions!

BOTB

For the first time, KSDMS has a battle of the books team. The team members are Payne, *****, Parrie Kay, Jenna and Keaura. The coaches are Ann Arnold, Lindsey Nusbaum and administrator, Wilton McMillan. The students have to read three books chosen by the BOTB committee from Gallaudet University. The books are: See You at Harry’s, Ninth Ward, and American Born Chinese. The team will compete by videophone the week of January 13-17. Their first competition will be with Bermar Middle School, the Learning Center, and Ohio School for the Deaf. There are 20 schools competing this year. Only the top scoring teams move on to the next competition.

The KSDMS welcomes Robbin Richie! She grew up in Louisville and is a UL fan. Her favorite sport is Volleyball. She was the first Volleyball coach at KSD. Her favorite school subject was writing. Her favorite book is A Child Called It. The people she most admires are her parents. They were able to raise four children and taught them all to always do the right thing, even if it was not the most popular thing to do. The best part about KSD is the sense of family. KSD is great because, “It has deaf role models which is what all deaf students need.” She has worked in schools, but she has also worked as a waitress, a career counselor, and a flight attendant with Comair Airlines. The best advice she has for students is to find a career path in something you truly love. Find what satisfies you and become the best in your field!

By: Ashley ********* When I was about 10 years old, I lived in *************. I’m deaf and I didn’t know how to sign. So, I went to ************* Elementary on the first day of school, and I was excited because I wanted to make some new friends but at the same time, I was the only deaf person in **************** Elementary School. When I went to that school, a lot of people were staring at my cochlear device because I was wearing it the first time I came in the class. Some kids were staring at me because they noticed my cochlear and they knew I was deaf. I didn’t care what they thought. The next day, When I was on the playground with a bunch of hearing kids, some of them were pointing at me and talking beside my back. Then, this girl named Alejandra came up to me with her two friends and she asked, ”Why are you here? I mean, Why are you here in hearing school? I thought you weren’t allowed to be in a hearing school because you are deaf.” Honesty, I was a little bit confused because I don’t know why she asked me that stupid question but it didn’t matter. I answered, “ Because I can? Of course, I am allowed to be in hearing school. It doesn’t matter.” Then, Alejandra asked another question, “Okay, then, why do you have a weird thing on your head?” Before I answered her question , she poked the side of head hard and laughed at me and I yelled, “stop it!” It actually hurts when someone pokes the side of my head because I have a cochlear implant inside on the side of my head. I just hate it. After I told her stop. She stopped and then, she said terrible things like, “Deaf people aren’t human! They’re just retarded freaks that have no brain!” When she said that, I started to cry a little and it really hurt my feelings, then I ran away from Alejandra and her friends. I can’t remember what else happened but I remember I went

She cut her leg with the knife because she made wrong decisions. She changed at the end of the play and wanted to fix things and make them right. We learned about bullying. They used verbal, cyber , and social bullying in the play. The play talked about one girl, Abby, who just joined the volleyball team. Some girls were complaining and started to be mean to Abby. It was social bullying. Other girls was texting other girls. It looked like they were gossiping. That was cyber and verbal bullying. Alexandra ******* said “It was cool and we learn about bullying.” Parrie Kay said “ Wow, it was inspectional. I think it was a really good story.” Jeremy ****** said “It was good and we learned to make less bullying. It was good to learn it.
