We welcome you to the Medical University of South Carolina, James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine located at 173 Ashley Ave, Charleston, SC 29425. Our main responsibility to candidates is to provide a comfortable facility in which to take your CITA administered ADEX examination. Requirements for the examination and grading of the examination are determined solely by the testing agency governing your licensing exam. This facility is Latex Free.

2020 Dental Facility and Equipment Fees All Fees must be paid to CITA. All candidates must turn in all equipment at the end of the exam. $500.00 – Full Exam Facility Fee (Patient only - $250, Manikin only - $250) Paid by all candidates. MUSC students only need to pay this one time. The College will supply all material and equipment that the dental candidate needs to complete the exam. Eye protection is the responsibility of the candidate. $300.00 – Manikin Equipment Fee for Non MUSC candidates (includes use of an Acadental Endo/Pros manikin and an NSK electric handpiece). This fee is mandatory if taking the Manikin portion of licensing exam. We use electric and rotary handpieces at our dental school. Endo files are available with the exception of files greater then 25mm. $300.00 – Patient Equipment Fee for Non MUSC candidates (includes a Piezo scaler, instrument usage and sterilization). This fee is mandatory if taking the Patient portion of licensing exam. All supplies will be provided to complete the Patient Exam. (see attachment)

2020 Dental Candidate Information

It is the responsibility of candidates to provide their own patients. MUSC does not allow applicants to access patient records. Examination and/or treatment of patients in the Dental School prior to the licensing exams are prohibited. This includes screening of patients after-hours. Securing backup patients is strongly advised. The candidate is responsible for his or her patients and must make provisions for follow-up care if the treatment during the exam is unsatisfactory. It is the responsibility for each candidate to provide his or her own malpractice insurance while treating patients on the exam. All candidates must strictly adhere to all College of Dental Medicine guidelines concerning barrier protection and instrument/equipment sterilization. Eye protection is provided for patients only. Storage - We do not have storage facilities for your instruments or equipment. The Dental Maintenance department will be available for technical support. Should you have any questions concerning the usage of any equipment, please call (843) 792-2255. Candidates are welcome to visit our facility during the week of the Board at the following times. Tuesday, 8:00 AM – Noon, Wednesday 5:00-6:00 PM or Thursday 5:00-6:00 PM. Registration will be administered by CITA. (Please refer to your manual for time schedules).

MUSC is 100% digitized. We are not able to print out any x-rays needed or taken during the board exam. Your patients’ radiographs may be brought with you on a flash drive in jpeg format, or you may email them to: cdmimages@musc.edu, and type “attn: Sheryl” in the subject line one week prior to the exam. Our school personnel will assist you in submitting your x-rays digitally to the licensing agency governing your board during your exam weekend. Printed radiographs can also be used at this exam per the exam manual but they must be printed prior to the exam. CITA will provide an Acadental Typodont to candidates taking the manikin exam. The manikin exam will be held in the Simulation Lab. MUSC will provide the shroud.

DIRECTIONS TO MUSC

I-26 FROM THE WEST Take I-26 East to Charleston. At the end of the interstate, take exit #221A/17S. Get in the right hand lane. After first traffic light, take the Rutledge Avenue exit to the right. Go .5 miles. Turn right on Bee Street. MUSC is two blocks ahead.

HIGHWAY 17 FROM THE NORTH Take Highway 17 South to Charleston. Take Rutledge Avenue exit to right. Go .5 miles. Right on Bee Street. MUSC is two blocks ahead.

HIGHWAY 17 FROM THE SOUTH Take Highway 17 North into Charleston. Cross Ashley River Bridge and the overpass. At second light, turn right on President Street. MUSC is one block ahead.

HIGHWAY 171 FROM THE EAST Take Highway 171 (Folly Road) heading west to Charleston/downtown. Exit onto James Island Connector (Hwy 30). At connectors end, get in left lane. Follow Calhoun Street signs. At second light, turn left on Jonathan Lucas Street. You will be on the MUSC campus.

HIGHWAY 61 FROM THE WEST Follow Highway 61 East. Stay in the left lane, headed to downtown Charleston (Hwy 17 N). Cross Ashley River Bridge and the overpass. At second light, turn right on President Street. MUSC is one block ahead.

PARKING

Parking is available in two areas for visitors: The MUSC Medical Center parking garage at the intersection of President and Jonathan Lucas Streets, and the ARPG (Ashley-Rutledge Parking Garage). Metered parking on surrounding streets is also available, but is limited. See map attached.
