The Chiefs look to build upon their home-opening win with their annual contest versus the Lethbridge Hurricanes tonight. Spokane lost in Lethbridge in the only meeting last year, 4-0. Brayden Burke scored a hat trick for the Canes while Buffalo Sabres prospect Giorgio Estephan racked up four points (1g, 3a) and a +4. Stuart Skinner made 32 saves in the SO. Spokane rebounded from a season-opening loss in Kennewick on Sept. 24 (8-3) with a strong victory over the same Tri-City Americans last Saturday at Spokane Arena. Carolina Hurricanes prospect Hudson Elynuik pitched in four points (1g, 3a) in his first game since returning from pro camp while Kailer Yamamoto scored twice and added an assist. Captain Tyson Helgesen scored the game-winner to kick off a 3-goal third period for the Chiefs. The Chiefs look to keep their home winning streak against Lethbridge alive tonight. They haven’t lost to the Hurricanes at Spokane Arena since Feb. 12, 2003. Current Chiefs Goaltending Coach Ryan Cyr was actually the Canes’ goalie for that game, making 33 saves in the 3-2 Lethbridge win. Lethbridge is looking to build off the success of last year, as they broke a six-year playoff drought with a Central Division title (46-24-1-1; 94 points). They return their top three scorers from a year ago in Burke (27-82-109 last year), Tyler Wong (43-46-89) and Estephan (30-44-74). Overage forward Ryley Lindgren (27-23-50) has burst onto the scene this year, with four goals and five assists through five games, good for a tie for third among all WHL scorers. In goal, it’s all Skinner for the Canes. The 2017 NHL Draft prospect posted a 2.73 GAA and .920 SV% last season with 3 shutouts while splitting time with current Chiefs starting goalie Jayden Sittler. Sittler was acquired by the Chiefs via trade over the summer. Spokane boasts a young group this year, including a new captain (Helgesen) for the first time in two years as defenseman Jason Fram held the title for the 14-15 and 15-16 seasons. They’ll need to find a replacement on offense for Dominic Zwerger, last year’s leading goal scorer (27). Potential contributors to fill that gap include: Anderson-Dolan, in his sophomore campaign after being named the team’s Rookie of the Year last year; Ethan McIndoe, who scored eight goals in 62 GP as a 16-year-old; Pavel Kousal and Ondrej Najman, the Chiefs’ two new European import players who both hail from the Czech Republic and played with the Czech national team. The Chiefs do retain three of their top four scorers from a season ago in Kailer Yamamoto (19-52-71 in 57 GP), Keanu Yamamoto (22-32-54) and Markson Bechtold (17-31-48). Carolina Hurricanes 3rd-round pick Elynuik (19-25-44 in 55 GP) will also be a difference maker. Third-year men Evan Fiala (6-12-18, 101 PIM, +18) and Helgesen (3-23-26) lead in experience on the back end, with an emerging young group led by 2015 WHL Bantam Draft 1st-overall pick Ty Smith. In goal, Sittler (2.94, .905, 1 SO in 39 GP) looks to be the regular starter with recently-acquired Dawson Weatherill as backup.

THEY’RE WATCHING… The Chiefs had five forwards named to the NHL Central Scouting’s preliminary “Players to Watch” list, as announced on Oct. 4. Kailer Yamamoto earned an “A” rating, indicating a potential first-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Jaret Anderson-Dolan got a “B” (2nd-3rd) while three players – Ethan McIndoe, Pavel Kousal and Jake McGrew – each earned “C” scores.

HIGHWAY TO HELGESEN… Third-year defenseman Tyson Helgesen was named the Chiefs’ team captain in a pre-game ceremony on October 1. He takes over for two-year leader Jason Fram. Helgesen scored the game-winning goal in his first game wearing the “C”; a 5-2 win over Tri-City.

PREMIER PROSPECTS… Three Chiefs’ prospects – all forwards – were recently named to their respective provincial rosters for the upcoming 2016 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup. Carter Chorney (2nd Rd, 39th Overall in 2016 WHL Bantam Draft) made Team AB, Ethan Leyh (8th, 160th) to Team BC and Cordel Larson (9th, 186th) to Team SK.

NEW ERA… Long-time Spokane GM Tim Speltz announced on August 16 that he had accepted a job with the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs and would step down from his position with the Chiefs. Originally hired in 1990, Speltz reigned over a 26-year run of success rivaled by very few in the WHL, including 961 regular season wins, 23 playoff appearances, 142 playoff wins, seven trips to the Western Conference Finals, four to the WHL Finals, two WHL Championships and two Memorial Cup Championships. Speltz will become the Director of Western Area Scouting for the Leafs, retain his ownership stake in the Chiefs and maintain his home in Spokane.

HEY MR. CARTER... Scott Carter was announced as the Chiefs’ new GM on September 8. A Penticton, B.C. native, Carter boasts over 28 years of experience as a hockey scout, business manager and entrepreneur. He was a regional scout in the NHL from 1987-2015, President & GM of the Penticton Vees from 2004-2008, BCHL Executive of the Year in 2005, co-founder of the BCHHF in 1991, co-founder of the WPHL in 1994 and has been a full partner in Vaughn Custom Sports since 1996.

ALL-AMERICAN… F Kailer Yamamoto played in the USA Hockey CCM All-American Prospects Game in Philadelphia on Sept. 22, featuring 42 of the top American-born prospects for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He finished with 2 assists and a +1 rating as his Team Howe lost 6-4 to Team LeClair.

NATIONAL NODS… The Spokane Chiefs had 6 players recognized with invitations to national team camps over the summer. Four players – D Ty Smith, D Matt Leduc, F Eli Zummack and F Koby Morrisseau – were invited to Hockey Canada’s U17 camp. Jaret Anderson-Dolan went to Canada’s U18 camp. Kailer Yamamoto competed at USA Hockey’s National Junior Evaluation Camp with aspirations to make this winter’s Team USA for the IIHF World Junior Championship.

HURRICANE HUDSON… Chiefs forward Hudson Elynuik was selected in the third round (74th overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. The towering centerman scored 19 goals and added 25 assists in 56 GP last season, turning heads after the turn of the calendar year with a point in 17 of 20 games starting on January 9, including a 10-game point streak. Elynuik’s father Pat was the 8th Overall pick in the 1986 draft to the Winnipeg Jets & went on to play 500+ NHL games.

BENCH BOSS… Don Nachbaur returns to the Chiefs for his 7th season as head coach having recently signed an extension through the 2017-18 season. The WHL veteran ranks 1st in franchise history in career wins (235) and just eclipsed Mike Babcock for the all-time lead in career games coached for the Chiefs (426). Entering the season, his .552 winning percentage with Spokane ranked 2nd behind Hardy Sauter (.629). Nachbaur is one of four WHL coaches with 600+ career wins (665). He is also the winningest coach in Tri-City Americans history w/ 235.

CATCHING EYES… With a late September birthday, forward Kailer Yamamoto will first become eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in 2017 and he has been catching the eye of hockey scouts. The Spokane native impressed with stints at international tournaments with Team USA (Five Nations, U-18, U-20 NJEC) and produced 128 points (42 goals and 86 assists) in his first two seasons with the Chiefs (125 games). Multiple news outlets project Yamamoto as a future first round pick, with The Hockey News placing him 5th in their 2017 Draft Preview from May of this year.

NEW IN NET… Neither of the Chiefs’ two rostered goalies, Jayden Sittler and Dawson Weatherill, played for the Chiefs before this season. Sittler was acquired over the summer from Lethbridge, where he played 39 games with a 2.94 GAA and .905 SV%. Weatherill was acquired on Sept. 29 from Red Deer after appearing in 5 games as a 16-year-old last season, allowing 7 goals on 52 shots while going 1-1-0-0. Both call Red Deer home.

YOUTH MOVEMENT… The Chiefs enter the 2016-17 season with youth at the forefront; 18 current players born in 1998 or later, including seven 17-year-olds and three 16-year-olds.

CZECH THEM OUT… The Chiefs drafted Czech teammates Ondrej Najman and Pavel Kousal with the 22nd and 82nd picks, respectively, in the 2016 CHL Import Draft. Najman scored 18 goals and 44 points in 38 games, including four multi-goal performances, and added three goals and three assists in five games with the Czechs at the 2016 IIHF U18 World Championship in Grand Forks, N.D. Kousal racked up 20 goals and 23 assists in the same 38 games, including a stretch in which he scored a point in 11 of 12 games. He recorded three assists with the Czechs at the U18 Championship.

FAMILY AFFAIR… D Jake Toporowski has family ties to Spokane. The second-year defenseman’s father, Kerry Toporowski, played for the Chiefs from 1989-91, racking up 889 PIM (2nd in franchise history) including a single-season record 505 in 90-91. Jake’s younger brother Luke, who projects as a power forward, continued the tradition as the Chiefs’ 1st round (8th overall) selection in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft.

RECENT/UPCOMING CAREER MILESTONES… #9 Keanu Yamamoto played his 200th game on Sept. 24; #12 Markson Bechtold enters tonight with 199 GP.

FRANCHISE CONSISTENCY… The Chiefs’ qualification for the 2016 WHL Playoffs marked the 10th consecutive season the Chiefs have played in the postseason (103 games). They lost in the first round to Victoria (six games).

INJURY REPORT… #12 F Markson Bechtold, lower body, week-to-week; #13 F Jake McGrew, lower body, season-ending; #23 D Jake Toporowski, lower body, 2-4 weeks;
