BACKGROUNDTogwotee Mountain Lodge is regarded as one of the best snowmobile destinations in the United States by popular snowmobile publications, such as American Snowmobiler, SnowGoer and SnoWest. With its average of 600 inches of snow a year, 2.5 million acres of wilderness and 600 miles of groomed trails, it’s easy to see why.

In the summer, the lodge is transformed into a family destination close to Wyoming’s best known attractions including: Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks as well as the town of Jackson Hole. The lodge is operated by Aramark.

LOCATIONThe lodge and snowmobile rentals are located off of highways 26 and 287 in northwest Wyoming. Togwotee is 16 miles east of Grand Teton National Park, 44 miles south of Yellowstone National Park and 48 miles northeast of Jackson Hole. The lodge is within Bridger-Teton National Forest on Angle Mountain at 8,654 feet in elevation.

SEASONTogwotee Mountain Lodge is open from mid-May to mid-October, approximately the same dates as the National Parks’ seasons. The lodge closes in late fall and reopens for the snowmobiling season the first week of December until mid-April.

HISTORY The Togwotee Pass was first surveyed in 1873 by William A. Jones of the Corp of Engineers, who was looking to build a road to Yellowstone. Nearly 50 years later, the road crew arrived at Togwotee Pass and among them were Al and Bertha Angle. When the road opened in 1921, the Angles built a permanent camp that featured comfortable lodging and home cooked meals. After 30 years in operation, they decided to seed a less strenuous way of life and sold their cherished and hard won business to Harry Moll. Moll later sold it to the Weideman Family, who built the lodge that exists today. They completed construction in 1965 and called it Togwotee Mountain Lodge. The old Angle’s Camp Lodge was then renovated and moved in 1982 to its present site, where it serves as the Lodge’s gas station and convenience store.

TOGWOTEE AT A GLANCE

• Togwotee Mountain Lodge was opened as the Angle Camp in 1926 by Al and Bertha Angle.

• The Angles ran an outfitters camp, teaching potential guides how to be true mountain men.

• Togwotee’s snowmobile country remains uncongested. The vast 2.5 million acres of riding area easily accommodates the lodge’s max guest count of approximately 450 people per day.

• The entire state of Delaware can fit in the snowmobiling riding area of 2.5 million acres at Togwotee.

• You can ride 170 miles southwest from the lodge and never cross a highway.

• Laid end to end, Togwotee’s trail system would extend from Moran, Wyoming all the way into Canada.

• Togwotee averages 600 inches (50 feet) of annual snowfall a year, which is the height of five basketball hoops stacked on top of each other.

• During the 2011 winter season, Togwotee’s riding area had 55 feet of snow, compared to 23.3’ in West Yellowstone, Wyoming, and 17’ in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

• At 8,654 feet, Togwotee’s elevation is equal in height to nearly seven Empire State Buildings.

• Wyoming has more Antelope than people.

LODGING AND DINING

LODGINGTogwotee offers a variety of cozy lodging options that speak to the importance of friends and family on vacations. The property’s 54 cabins include a bedroom with two queen beds, a living room with a sleeper sofa, a kitchenette, and a private bath. The cabins also come with two televisions a front porch and picnic tables. Moreover, 20 of the cabins have electric fireplaces. ADA and pet-friendly cabins are also available. Prices range from $149-259 (standard cabin), $169-279 (fireplace cabin).

Within the lodge are 28 lodge rooms and six suites. Sleeping four, the lodge rooms are located on the 2nd floor and offer all the amenities expected for a comfortable vacation including two queen beds, televisions and private bathrooms. There is not an elevator in the main lodge. Lodge rooms range in price from $109-219.

The 300 sq. ft. suites are located on the third floor of the main lodge and are perfect for groups up to six. Each has a family room, bedroom, bunk beds that are great for kids, a two-part bathroom (toilette and shower separated), and a large closet great for storing winter and outdoor gear. Suites also include a mini-fridge, microwave and air conditioner. There is not an elevator in the main lodge. Suites range in price from $119-229.

DINING The Grizzly Grill: Located on the main floor of the lodge, The Grizzly Grill offers breakfast, lunch (winter only), and dinner to guests. Enjoy hearty meals of prime steak, pasta and fish dishes. The Grizzly Grill’s menu also includes salads and comfort foods like slow roasted pot roast. Boxed lunches are also available for a grab-and-go option. Requests need only be submitted to the Front Desk 24 hours in advance.

Red Fox Saloon: On the east end of main floor of the lodge is this fully stocked Western–style bar. With 10 taps of brew and a grill menu, guests are able to relax, refuel and reminisce.

AMENITIESAll rooms at Togwotee Mountain Lodge feature free Wi-Fi, television(s), baseboard heat, coffee maker, and blow dryer. Cabins include kitchenettes. The lodge also features the Bridger Pavilion, a four season events room able to accommodate groups up to 120 people with a full-service kitchen and beautiful river rock wood-burning fireplace. Two hot tubs and changing rooms are located adjacent to the Pavilion. The onsite Angle Mountain Gas Station and Convenience Store offers staple items, snacks, beverages and fuel for guests. In the winter, the Togwotee Snowmobile Rental Shop opens to provide snowmobile and gear rentals as well as mechanic services.

PACKAGESWinter guests will visit Togwotee Mountain Lodge on the Classic Winter Package. The package includes social hour in the evenings, hot breakfast buffet, dinner, a snowmobile guide for each day following the day of check in and before the day of check out. Reduced rates on snowmobile rentals, and Jackson Hole Airport transfer included for guests with a three-day visit or longer.

Snow Conditions Hotline: 307-543-0446 Snowmobile Rental Shop hours 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Guided experiences depart at 9 a.m. All sleds required to return no later than 4:30 p.m.. All sled rentals come with one tank of gas and oil per day. Multi-day rentals do not require return of snowmobile each day, but do require end of day check in with the snowmobile rental shop for safety reasons.

Insurance: Optional insurance may be available based on model type and deductible. Inquire at the snowmobile rental shop.

Minimum passenger age: 8 years+ riding in the back, 5-7 years+ riding in the front.

Guides: fees included in Classic Winter Package rates or $59/full day per sled. Safety beacons are required for each guest riding behind a guide more than 1/4 mile off the trail per National Forest Service regulations. The snowmobile rental shop offers rentals for $10.00 per day.

National Forest Registration Permits: required on all sleds, available on-site for purchase.

Snowmobile Clothing: Togwotee’s Snowmobile Rental Shop provides head to toe snowmobile clothing to keep guests warm and protected.

Avalanche Beacon: The Backcountry Access Tracker avalanche beacon can greatly reduce the amount of time spent pinpointing, probing, and digging during an avalanche rescue. With directional lighting and digital distance readings, the guesswork of finding buried victims is eliminated. Our snowmobile staff will walk guests through operation of these devices.

Avalanche Shovel & Probe: Portable Avalanche Shovels are made of lightweight plastic and aluminum. They are made to attach securely to the outside of a gear pack. Once the avalanche victim is located, using a shovel specifically made for snow will greatly increase the speed of digging compared to digging by hand.

Collapsible Avalanche Probes are easy to carry and fold to a compact portable size. These special poles are tubular steel that are joined together to make a snow probe up to 12 feet long. The benefit to using a probe during an avalanche rescue is locating the person quickly to save valuable time by avoiding digging in the wrong location.

SNOWMOBILE GEAR

Knee pads: Knee pads provide protection from injuries caused by falling from the sled or making contact with trees when riding in heavily wooded areas. Knee pads and knee guards feature impact resistant ABS plastic and perforated foam padding for increased airflow to help ease perspiration. Knee pads can make all the difference in the world in regard to comfort and safety on the snowmobile.

SPOT GPS: The SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger provides a line of communication with the lodge or for emergency assistance when needed. Using 100% satellite technology, SPOT works virtually anywhere in the world, even where cell phones don’t. All GPS units are tracked by the lodge, so that our staff are aware of the location of the device at all times.

Backpack: The Lightning™ Pack, by True Adventure Gear, is a proven performer for the hardcore sledder. The backpack provides all-day comfort for exploring the back country. Securely carries avalanche probe, shovel, and other emergency gear and supplies.

SNOWMOBILE TOURSTogwotee Mountain Lodge is located on the Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail System (CDST) consisting of 600 miles (960km) of groomed trails and 2.5 million acres of off trail riding opportunities. The CDST is recognized as a world-class snowmobile destination, and is frequently rated as the top western snowmobile location by SnoWest readers in the Western Guide to Snowmobiling.

Togwotee Mountain Lodge welcomes riders of all abilities; beginner to expert, trail riders to backcountry enthusiasts. The property employs a team of experienced and knowledgeable guides, an always-new mountain snowmobile fleet and all the additional gear, accessories and amenities guests look for in a snowmobile vacation.

YELLOWSTONE SNOWMOBILING TOURS Operated by Scenic Safaris, an authorized concessioner of the National Park Service. All tour prices include transportation to location, breakfast, lunch, jacket, bib, helmet, gloves, snowboots, snowmobile and guide. Yellowstone National Park fees are not included in tour prices.

The Old Faithful TourA classic tour that takes guests on a 90 mile round trip adventure into Yellowstone National Park. This trip departs daily from December through April and includes a hot lunch at Old Faithful. Old Faithful peak season: $325 per driver, $175 per passenger. Old Faithful regular season: $295 per driver, $175 per passenger. Park Fees are $20 per snowmobile and are not included in the price.

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone TourThis tour enters at the south entrance of Yellowstone traveling up to the “Grand Canyon of Yellowstone” along the shores of Yellowstone Lake to the Mud Volcano, continuing on through Hayden Valley with its bison herds, then north to Yellowstone Falls. Guests enjoy a picnic lunch at the canyons before traveling back to the south gate. This tour is 120 miles round trip and does not include Old Faithful. Grand Canyon peak season: $295 per driver, $175 per passenger. Grand Canyon regular season: $295 per driver, $175 per passenger. Park Fees are $20 per snowmobile and are not included in the price.

Yellowstone/National Forest Overnight TripsTo truly experience everything that Yellowstone and the Teton-Bridger National Forest have to offer, one day is not enough! Togwotee Adventures can arrange an overnight tour to multiple destinations in the park. Overnight tours are designed specifically for the group depending on desired overnight destination; the Snow Lodge at Old Faithful, West Yellowstone, or Gardnier, Montana. SUMMER ACTIVITIESMany of the attributes that make Togwotee Mountain Lodge a popular snowmobiling destination: the elevation, mountainous terrain, and millions of acres of untouched wilderness, are also the area’s best summer qualities. Togwotee is a hub for Wyoming vacations due to its central location between Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks and the town of Jackson Hole. In addition to being a short drive from Wyoming’s most well known tourist attractions, the forest surrounding the lodge is also home to a wide variety of outdoor activities.

HORSEBACK RIDINGTake a trip back into the Old West, with full and half day trail rides into the Teton wilderness and Wind River mountain range. BIKINGTours include traveling along the sagebrush flats on the eastern slopes of Grand Teton National Park for prize-winning views of the entire Teton Range at a relaxing pace - a great family experience. HIKINGNumerous hiking trails are blazed from or nearby Togwotee Mountain Lodge. These trails take guests into the heart of the Bridger-Teton National Forest with amazing views of the Tetons, Angle Mountain and other scenic vistas. In addition to the trails nearby the lodge, Yellowstone and Grand Teton offer other hiking options for guests a short drive away.
