PRODUCT AND WHY?

MY MAGAZINE• My magazine is a chart magazine, its name ‘House of Song’ it

targets an audience around the age of 17 to 35/40 years of age. The vibe of the magazine is a clean cut, serious yet slightly quirky magazine that showcases fresh faced, young adult artist who are in the charts currently.

• I have had many different magazines inspire me, however the main two that caught my attention were q magazine and the Rolling Stone magazine. Both are chart magazines how ever Rolling Stone magazine focuses its attention slightly more on the rock genre. None the less each often feature artist that are currently not only in the charts but topping the charts. This was what I was hoping to achieve when making my magazine, I wanted to the audience a sense of what the music industry is about nowadays, focusing on current musical genres, such as pop/rock, soul music etc.

.

• Bauer Media Group is a European-based media company, it has its main headquarters based in Hamburg, Germany. The publishing institution its self has produced a portfolio of over 600 magazines, over 400 digital products and has acquired around 50 radio and TV stations around the world. Bauer Media Group has a workforce of approximately 11,000 employees in 17 countries, this makes it’s a global publishing company. If I were to choose a publishing company to distribute my magazine this would be top of the list as it is also involved in publishing magazines such as q magazine and Kerrang, these are both to widely known about magazines that are both successful. The target audience for these magazines is of a similar age of my target audience 17-35/40, Q magazine is also one of the most well known chart magazines in the world.

WENNER MEDIA LLC

Page 6: Media institutions - Question 3

• Wenner Media are the publishers of Rolling Stone, Us Weekly, and Men’s Journal brands, they are based in New York City and satellite offices in Chicago and Los Angeles. I think that Wenner Media could publish my magazine as I have seen the Rolling Stone magazine that inspired different aspects of my magazine was also published by this institution. The majority of the audience reading the rolling stone magazine are between 18 –49 or 75.6 % of their readers, this is a similar stat that I was aiming for when creating my magazine. I feel that if my magazine were to be published by Wenner Media they would be able to sell the magazine to the target audience I intended as they have already been successful with the rolling stone magazine. They are again a large publishing institution and I think my magazine would be suited to this company as its price is that of a glossy magazine similar to rolling stone.

BUDGET

Page 8: Media institutions - Question 3

The budget for my magazine would have to be fairly large, the music industry is a completive one and there are many musical artist out there, however when they reach the charts their recognition starts to grow, this will make the chart aspect of music magazines even more competitive. Getting famous artists to pose for your magazine isn’t an easy task and will involve a large budget to take time out of their busy schedule.

Page 9: Media institutions - Question 3

• Another example of why the budget would have to be large is unlike indie magazines for example, that have a niche audience mainly, a chart magazine has a much larger audience, and has more dominant competitors like NME, Q magazine, Billboard. These are just a few of the magazine that are most well known, so to break through in to a place worth getting noticed it will take a lot of funding. This is why my magazine would have be signed on to a large production company, to include a variety of well known artists and to fund interviews, gig and live tour review etc.

Page 11: Media institutions - Question 3

Advertising would be another big step in being able to publish my magazine, by using a publishing company that is well established this would obviously be a great help in advertising as social media is a large part of today society, for example social media accounts/websites created for other magazines published by the same publishing institution could help feature the new magazine. If the publishing company was fortunate enough to have a large budget, advertising could go in other magazines, newspapers, billboards etc.

However if I was starting out with a publishing company that didn’t have a particularly large budget I would create leaflets to be handed out, or samples of the magazine as a freebee along side newspapers, I would make many social media platforms for the magazine including a website and try to get it noticed online and offline.

PRICE & LOCATIONThe price of my magazine is £3.99, this makes it clear again that the magazine would really need to be supported by a large publishing institution, especially as I would like the magazine to be global. I chose this price after researching other chart magazines mainly Q magazine, Billboard and Rolling Stone as they are similar chart magazines to my own. This seems to be a reasonable price as the magazine is high quality and would feature famous and current artists.

The location of where the magazine would be sold a recognised would be anywhere and everywhere possible, supermarkets, billboards, online so that the audience can access my magazine on their androids/smart devices etc. (this does not link to the actual publication of the magazine these are simply places the magazine would be sold thanks to the production company).
