AL-QURAN READING SCHEME FOR YOUTH REFINES AL-QURAN READING SKILLS

Al-Quran Reading Scheme for Youth, STAR is the only educational programme that conducts lessons on reading Al-Quran with tarannum or melody. The scheme has produced several male and female national Al-Quran readers who have competed at the National and International levels. Since its introduction by the Islamic Studies Department 22 years ago, the scheme has taught more than three thousand students. The scheme is conducted by the Tilawah Al-Quran and Dikir Unit, Continuing Education Guidance at the Islamic Studies Department. It is part of the department's efforts in producing youth Al-Quran readers as well as the successors of senior Al-Quran readers. The scheme teaches the students to read Al-Quran using the well-known tarannum or melodies, as well as the theories and practical elements of tajwid. The sessions run for two years and lessons are held on Fridays and Sundays. The students must pass the interview and conditions of the application which is open to the subjects of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, aged from 12 to 18 years. The increasing number of applicants each year shows the scheme receives encouraging support from parents. Apart from teaching Al-Quran reading with tarannum and memorising Tausyeh, the scheme is also hoped to produce successors of National Al-Quran readers. Pengiran Masidayu alias Hazirah binti Pengiran Hussin, the Acting Head of the Tilawah Al-Quran and Dikir Unit of the Islamic Studies Department said a number of the scheme's students have achieved success at the national and international levels. She added some of the students have also re-joined the scheme as teachers. The scheme is also a continuation for youth who have learnt Al-Quran under the Talented Children Guidance Scheme at Religious Schools. Al-Quran Reading Scheme for Youth, STAR, gives the Muslim community, especially the youth, a platform to learn Al-Quran and stay constantly close to Holy Book of Islam. Source: Brudirect 21 Jan 2019
