1.The composition of the frame ensures that the gun is prominent in the scene connoting the sense of danger. The blurriness creates suspense as the audience do not know who he is going to attack. The blurriness could also symbolise his anger and that he is blinded by it The black of his outfit is in stark contrast to the white van and highlights the vast difference between the two characters. 2. The frame is cropped so that the audience focus in on the use of performance to create meaning for the audience. His shocked face and the way that he pulls back from the gun highlights the shock that this is happening to him- it creates the feeling that he is innocent and helpless- a stark contrast to the gang member that Sandra Bullocks character pinned him as at the start of the film. 3. The use of lighting in the scene connotes the way his daughter sees him- god like and we are forced to realise the terribleness of the situation if he were to be killed. The mise en scene in the background reflects normality- with the Christmas decorations on the lawn- this further highlights the idea that this film is talking about real life and that racism and not caring about each other can impact all of our lives. Body language from both of the characters highlight their feelings towards each other.

The close up further highlights the mans anger, the secondary characters face is blurred to ensure that all focus is on the man with the gun and his anger. The clip relies on body language to create sympathy within the audience- the positions of the character highlight the power struggle and further reinforce that the Mexican man is the victim. The inside images and the daughter create a juxtaposition between the safety and joy of inside to the situation unfolding outside. As she runs from the house is incredibly bright as it is around the dad rainforcing the preciousness of her and the innocence of her- it further creates suspense for the audience as they fear for what will happen to the girl.

Performance is key for creating the emotional response that the audience have in this scene. The camera movement and editing further reinforces the dads reaction bring the image closer and closer to the audience, despite the audience wanting to look away from it. The brightness of the day further reinforces the directors point that this could happen anywhere- we are not protected from these problems in society. His facial expression is key to highlight the shock at his actions. The use of slow motion effect on their performance and the long takes on them before the cut further impacts their pain on the audience.
