Malnutrition is a
hidden epidemic in the
United States that is
under-recognized and
under-treated. It
occurs when the body
doesn’t get the right
balance of nutrients
and calories that it
needs to stay healthy. The Alliance for Aging Research
If you know someone
that is experiencing
malnutrition, please
call the Meals on
Wheels office.
You may find the
answers to the quiz at
the bottom of page 4.

As I meet with clients during home assessments, I am constantly reminded how important
Meals on Wheels is to our home delivered clients and to those who care about them. Often, the
meal is secondary to the daily visit from the volunteer, the phone calls checking on them when
they are absent from the home and regular staff communication with them. Meals on Wheels has always
been “more than just a meal” to many people. Despite the numbers that we serve, we come to know our
clients personally over the months and years that we serve them. It is a pleasure and a privilege to meet,
interview and listen to our clients on a daily basis as well as to provide a service that helps to keep them in
their homes. Marilyn Rivera, Social Worker

Meals on Wheels would like to thank Payless Shoe Source for choosing Meals on
Wheels as the organization for the Race To Give 5K event that was held on Saturday,
April 30. The funds raised will be used to provide meals and a safety check to the most
vulnerable seniors in our community. Thank you to all who participated, donated and
volunteered for this event to help support others less fortunate.
The 2016 Topeka Gives event was held on June 7 and proved to be very
successful again this year. The event raised $496,288 for 157 non-profit
organizations in Topeka. Meals on Wheels was very fortunate to receive
$9,825 from many generous Meals on Wheels supporters! Thank you very
much for your financial support. Without your assistance, Meals on Wheels
would not be able to provide this valuable community service. Thanks again
to the Meals on Wheels donors and the Topeka Community Foundation!
We appreciate you!

auction and entertainment. The event will be held on Friday, October 21, at
6:30 p.m. at our new location — Sunflower Ballroom at Maner Conference

Our social worker related a story about a client, a
man whose health professional recommended Meals
on Wheels to help relieve stress the family is
experiencing in providing his care on a daily basis
and health concerns of their own. The client’s wife
says she has the time to prepare breakfast and dinner,
but lunch is a particular challenge time-wise. The
gentleman is a diabetic and is bed-bound with a
serious wound that requires treatments and
medications. His daughter is a home dialysis patient
who has had two failed kidney transplants. The
client’s wife provides his daily care, as well as
assists the daughter with her home dialysis almost
daily. They also have adopted two grandchildren,
ages 4 and 8, so you can imagine how busy the wife
is. Meals on Wheels provides a lunch that helps keep
his blood sugars within range and the nutritious food
helps the healing process for his wound. This lunch
for her husband offers the man’s wife peace of mind
and is a blessing in so many ways.
It’s a humbling experience to be allowed to
participate in helping clients age successfully at
home. If you know of someone who could benefit
from the program, please don’t hesitate to call MOW
at (785) 295-3980.
